Detroit vs NY Giants

I see in today's paper the series is tied 21-21-1. I am surprised that two of the older NFL franchises have played each other only 43 times. Am I missing something? Are one of these franchises not as old as I think they are and/or was one of them in the AFC at some point? If so, I do not recall that. I thought both were always NFC teams.

Looks like 1970 was when Detroit lions began in the NFC. Before that the league was called the western division.

1970 for the New York giants. Before that they were in the eastern division.
