Last week we lost Josh Hamilton and Mr. Ranger Young.
If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.

Is the right solution overpaying for them?   No.

Teams are cyclical, and rather than drop a ton of resources right now, to win now, Daniels seems to be willing to sacrifice 2012 and possibly 2013 for the future.      It might not be the right path, but he's under no obligation to push  'win now',  over the potential long term health of his franchise.

No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

I think you're letting your fandom cloud your judgement.

Although Young has meant a lot to the Rangers in the past, he is pretty much worthless as a ballplayer right now.  His production can be replaced by someone 8 years younger for 1/20 the price.

Hamilton is a massive risk.  Probably the riskiest hitter sign ever.  And I mean that literally.  Much more than Pujols IMO.  With high risk comes the potential for high reward, and catastrophe.  The Rangers weren't willing to risk it and I can't blame them one bit.

As a fan I know these losses hurt.  But trust me, the Rangers are fine.  Hang up the #10 and #32 jersey and buy a Profar and Olt one.  As Erie said, it's cyclical.  The Rangers may be "down" for a season or 2 but he is certainly not wrecking the Rangers.

DeltaBoy

Well we have to see Jon's excuse seems to be the Last Season Dive but I blame the lack of pitching deplt vs Steve or Josh.  I am a Cardinals fan but living in TX and being married to a woman who been a Rangers fan all her life I follow what they do etc.

Young hit what 3 home runs this year?  Definitely past his prime and I agree with bs that Hamilton is a huge risk. It could pay off for la but could also blow up in their face.

My hope is that jon and Nolan continue to see the need for pitching due to the fact that the hitting has disappeared the last 3 postseasons.

#8 isn't bad.  The Giants weren't one of the 8 best teams in the MLB this year or 2010.

Willyboy

I'm a ranger fan and I trust Daniels and Nolan to do the best thing for the franchise.  We may have a down year or two, but we'll be fine.  How many teams wish their lineup included Kinsler, Andrus, Beltre, Cruz, Murphy, Moreland N
and AJ?  And who knows what kind of career Profar will have in TX?  We probably win the west if it weren't for 2 starters going down for the season.  This team should win 85 next year, and that should be enough to be in the thick of it come September.

Only thing I'm unhappy about is that we haven't significantly helped out the starting pitching, cause Lewis will be out till June and Feliz won't be back till July AT LEAST.  Darvish, Harrison, Holland, Ogando, and who knows.  Sure woulda been nice to get grienke, but he is also overrated for the contract he got I think. Hopefully Darvish can keep his walks in check, if so he can dominate.

Catchers n pitchers report in like 50 days or something, I can't wait!

If it makes you feel better you can have Napoli back as far as I am concerned. Beginning to wonder if his deal with the Red Sox goes through. Seems there is a real issue with his hip being healthy enough to play this year.

Yeah, he's doing such a terrible job cramming in other hardware alongside all those other championship the Rangers have in that trophy case,  the guy clearly has to go;  blighting the name of the Ranger brand the past half decade, clearly.

In the 40+ years before Jon Daniels the Rangers had ONE postseason win.  Not championship.  Not series win.  Just one win.  Over 40 years and they won one measly game.

In the 7 years he's been there they have won 18 postseason games, including 4 series and 2 WS appearances.

It's unbelievable that you could dislike someone that took a horrible, irrelevant, worthless franchise to the forefront of the major leagues in less than a decade.  The guy is a miracle worker.

DeltaBoy

The guy is a miracle worker.  May be to a point. But the game 6 loss to the Cards put him in my wifes dog house.

He got to get some pitching depth and find some more base hitting.

Blaming a GM for losing any particular game is foolish.  If the team he assembled was good enough to get them that far it was good enough to win that game.  Either the managing was poor or the players didn't come through.

DeltaBoy

Yep and I am off Jon's case for now he finally got some pitchers in and we will see what the season holds.

Soria.  Lindblom.  He hasn't brought in any new SPs.  So far its looking like Harrison, Darvish, Holland, Ogando, and who knows who else.  Lewis and Feliz will be back eventually, but I think Feliz will be in the pen.  The fifth starting spot is up for grabs at the moment.  Grimm, Ross, Perez, and maybe Font will be looking to pick the 5th spot, at least before Lewis returns.  If Pierzynski has the same year as last year it will be great, but I doubt it.  I'm not sure how much Berkman will contribute.

DeltaBoy

I just hope Berkman got a solid 3 years left in the TANK!

Don't know if anything will come of it, but I have heard that they are thinking about moving Kinsler to the OF with Andrus and Profar in the MIF.

Plus, there is always Craig Gentry.

That was the plan as of last year.

Willyboy

It's no longer the plan.  It looks like Profar will start out in TripleA.  Infield will stay the same but with Mitch Moreland at 1st. Kinsler won't be switching position.  I'm excited to see what he can do with a full season.  Gentry and Leonys Martin will be fighting it out for CF and may even platoon this year.

DeltaBoy

Been reading the staff got concerns about replacing the hitting production they have lost with Hambone, Young and their former Catcher.

Pig In The City

The Rangers are developing a strong pitching rotation and seem willing to rely on their farm system over the next two or three years.  Losing Josh was big but the team will survive it.  It may actually turn out to be the best thing in the end.  Young was done last year.  A great leader and Ranger but his career is done.

Dr. Starcs

If young is done, what do you consider berkman?

userpick

Being a huge rangers fan, I obviously have some concerns for the upcoming season. But there's no way you give Hamilton that money. I was the biggest hambone supporter in the world, but he's not even worth that. When he's on, he'a as good as it gets. But when he is off, NOTHING is uglier. If you get two strikes on Hamilton(and definitely a full count) throw him a curve ball in the dirt, and he's walking back to the dug out. He can hammer fastballs, and hanging curves. But he's said himself, he struggles with discipline at the plate.

As far as CF goes, Leonys Martin has to step up and be the guy. He doesn't have to replace Hamilton, but he has to play solid defense and get on base.

My biggest concern(as it is every year) is starting pitching. Who will round out the rotation? I'll give you guys a name to remember if you don't already know him. Cody Buckel. He's a young kid who played most of the year in AA. I have actually played a lot of golf with this guy. He's a good kid and has a world of talent. The report has been that if the season started today, he would be in the rotation. But, the season doesn't start today so who knows who it will be in the 5th spot?

Ultimately, I trust Nolan and JD to make smart decisions for us. And we will win the west this year. Mark it down.

DeltaBoy

I am taking a Wait and See with Jon and Nolan , last seasons fall out was disturbing.

I'd be SHOCKED if he was in the rotation out of spring training.  He was good, but nothing special for Frisco last year.  I'd think 2014 would be a good target year for him to make the big club.

I think most everyone would be fairly surprised if the Rangers contended this year.  Including the Rangers FO.

Yeah I am not optimistic.  Nolan and JD say we aren't starting a rebuilding cycle and that it's still a "win now" approach.  But I this year will change that.  I hope I'm wrong but I don't have high hopes.  We had a few really good years.

Ridiculous. If you want to claim objectivity, throw out something to back it up, otherwise you do just look butthurt. I mean, at least list who the eight best teams were those years since, in your opinion, the World Series winner wasn't one of those teams.

The fact is that both years ('10 and '12) the Giants won the NL West with 90+ wins and then dominated in the WS. To claim they weren't one of the top eight teams those years reeks of sour grapes.

When news first broke, I was so mad at the rangers FO for potentially running off Nolan. But after doing some research, I think it's time he goes. He has a huge ego and wants all of the power. A lot of people say Nolan is the main reason we didn't get Prince, Cliff Lee, Greinke, and others. If he leaves, I won't be upset.

It's rare to find a superstar that makes a great owner or GM.  Too much ego.
