At QB, BA was plenty athletic, but a bit short.

RB: Collins and Williams had the size, were about a tenth of a second slower than average, weaker on the bench, average in the 3-cone, and below average in the jumping. Which makes sense, since those test explosion and they were a bit slower.

FB: Slow in the forty times for sure, average at the bench, not as explosive in the jumping (see above)

WR: We've had really good size there, pretty good speed, though our speedier guys either didn't get a chance to shine (Herndon under Chaney and Smiley, Wilson with injuries) or didn't earn their way onto the field with Reed. A bit stronger than average which makes sense since we like them to block, Significantly better in the 3-cone, generally better in the broad, though not quite as good in the vertical.

TE: We've been a bit on the lighter side, on the fast side excluding Tate, significantly weaker in the bench which is strange seeing as our TE's are usually better blockers than most, about average in the 3-cone, about average in the broadh, and weak in the vertical.

OL: Definitely on the heavier side of average, significantly on the slower side. Of note is that many of our OL players have gotten lighter this year. A bit weaker on the bench, slower in the 3-cone and worse in the jumping. Which fits in with the slower and less explosive theme we've seen.

DE: Bit on the short and light side, stronger on the bench, slow in the forty and 3-cone, but much better in the jumping drills. We haven't had much top end speed, but we have had very explosive, quick twitch guys at the position (Flowers, Wise Jr) who were very productive rushers.

DT: We've been a bit light at DT, but significantly faster than average here. About on par with the bench as well. About on par with the 3-cone drill, and way better in the jumping drills. This makes sense as we've gone for more of the explosive interior linemen more often than the big space eating ones. Note, Winston should be with the DE's though he did play some DT as well.

LB: We've gotten bigger at this position over time, though unsurprisingly, we have been slower there with the exceptions being the more productive LB's. We've been a bit weaker at the bench. Very bipolar at the 3-cone, either a good bit worse or a good bit better. Significantly worse at the jumping drills which is a bad thing. The exceptions there being Spaight (who was a playmaker for us) and Carr and Holmes who were lighter LB's.

CB: We've had pretty good size here. Surprisingly good speed here as well. A bit on the weak side with the bench. On par with the 3-cone. Pretty close with the jumping drills as well. When people talk about not having adequate speed on defense, it isn't the CB position.

S: On average pretty good size, but a bit on the light side. This, along with some of the LB'ers, is where the lack of speed really comes into focus. We have been quite slow at the safety positions though about average with the bench press. On the slower side of the 3-cone, on par with the broad jump, but a bit weak with the vertical.

Really, the main 2 disappointing physically positions we have had under Bielema so far in terms of testing have been the OL and the Safety positions. LB is pretty bi-polar with a handful of athletic players but bad depth in terms of athleticism.

Interesting stuff...thanks for compiling all of this. Short synopsis - we have a long way to go in the area of player development.

Or if we want to put more players in the League, and attract better talent in recruiting, and, you know...win.

Mike brings up a good point though. What, the record number of players in a single graft from a school is something like 10 or 11. That is half of the recruiting class and usually those players will be coming from 2, maybe 3 total recruiting classes.

The players I listed were everybody I could find who participated in either the combine or pro day. I.e. also including the other half of the class that doesn't even sniff the NFL.

Typically, the top teams in the country will put in between 4-7 players into the draft each year meaning the other 15-20 that they sign aren't worthy of the NFL. That is the problem with comparing to the NFL. Obviously, the closer you get, the better, but you do the same stuff to Bama's players and they will fall short as well.

Although a quick caveat, the ht/wt data does come from the actual NFL; however, I think the combine numbers are averages from the combine of which about 2/3 of the players there actually get drafted. However, it still represents the top ~300 players in the country in a given year.

How many realize that the average of the best LB's in the country forty time is 4.7 or that the average forty of the top RB's is a 4.5?

two things , 1 those are the elite college players who went on to the NFL , not the average guys. 2 that pretty much blows everyone's theory on Ellis being slow . he is above average NFL guys which leads me to the fact that he wasn't used right

I know I have no problem eating crow about guys like Gaines and Ellis. Gaines I thought was too slow and a liability at safety as was Turner. Turner was on the slower side, but Gaines was actually quite athletic.

I commented frequently that Ellis seemed to have pretty good straight line speed, but he did so often just seem to be a step or two away from making the tackle and was not particularly great in coverage that I made the assumption that he had tight hips and lacked good change of direction. Not only does he run the forty faster than I expected, but was outright elite in the 3-cone drill which tests hip flexibility and change of direction.

I also remember how the hogville consensus was that we didn't have enough speed at receiver in 2013, but then Herndon goes off and runs a 4.47 and is still in the NFL.

Thought I'd revive this thread in wake of recent talks about the S&C of our program. In the next post, I'll provide the same data for every player I could find's pro-day under Petrino.

Three sources of data similar to the above post. The UA's official site, nfldraftscout.com, and the combine numbers. The timing from the pro day can vary from the UA's release and the website. If the difference was <0.05 seconds, I just randomly picked one. If it was more than 0.05 I tried to report both values. I like the website because it also gives a 10 yard split on the forty time.

What does it mean? Well, there's 5 year's of Petrino numbers to 4 years of Bielema with the 5th year months away.

We see that RB's are a good bit slower less explosive under Bielema, but they are shiftier under Bielema with faster shuttles and 3cones. FB's were a bit faster under Petrino but not as strong or explosive.

WR's were a lot closer than I expected given Wright, Adams, and Childs for Petrino. WR's are a bit bigger under Bielema, a decent bit strong, and very similar athletically overall.

TE is as you would expect. Much bigger under Bielema, faster and smaller under Petrino. They were stronger under Petrino as well with similar athleticism otherwise.

OL was definitely slower and weaker under Bielema, but not nearly as much as I expected, and the bench is skewed by Petrus's 45 reps who was primarily a Nutt player.

DL overall has been much better under Bielema than Petrino, albeit many of Bielema's best DL players came from Petrino's final recruiting class. Way more explosive while still being bigger and stronger. For whatever Herbert's shortcomings may have been elsewhere, he did very well here.

LB is about what you should have expected. Noticeable increase in size here with a sharp decrease in speed though similar explosion and wiggle and at least the lack of speed is met with an increase in strength. Similar to the DL with Petrino, the LB's currently on the roster are definitely a gift to Morris who will look all the better as Bielema has had some stud LB recruits recently.

CB's are pretty similar. Barely slower, looser hips under Bielema and decently stronger with some ridiculous broad jumps. Bielema has also let a really good crop of DB's for Morris to have at his disposal as well.

S is definitely a sore spot. And again, this should come as no surprise. Slow OL, LB, and S have been the big weak points. Our S's are about as fast as Petrino's LB'ers. They are still pretty explosive with loose hips, but they lack the straight line speed that is needed. Though, Ramirez is going to test out quite nicely, similar to Tramain Thomas from the Petrino era I'd guess.

Overall, nothing really ground shaking here. Strength and conditioning really wasn't any worse under Bielema than Petrino. We were improved on the DL, similar at WR and CB. TE was bigger and slower by design. Safeties and LB'ers were worse by poor recruiting. OL had some really good recruits, so they were likely either overrated or had a bad design plan. RB's were even more productive and just had different skill sets than under Petrino.

I can tell you that they all fall short of the NFL averages as well. How short? I'd love for you to compile the pro days and combines of every player over the past 5 years to do so. For the other teams. For the hogs at least, that's a couple hour project so I won't be doing that for the other 6 schools. If you only look at the combine, you are getting inflated numbers. Have to factor in the backups and non NFL level players too.
