Why would they go to the trouble to appoint an interim AD if the job was to be filled immediately?  If, as some say, the next AD has already been selected, the interim AD will have only served for a couple of weeks at the most when it is all said and done.

I would assume it is to lead the department from the time Long left until the new AD is in place, even if it is just a few days.
