1. Can MSU 'Bear Up' and keep pace?

All 14 SEC teams play an FCS opponent this season, games that aren't scheduled to be competitive. Arkansas smashed Florida A&M by six touchdowns on Thursday...

But this should be the best of Dave Steckel's three teams at Missouri State, stronger along the line of scrimmage with a new quarterback in Peyton Huslig who won a junior college national championship last season. But if the Tigers are serious about making strides this year, this game should be over by halftime so Drew Lock, Damarea Crockett and Barry Odom's best players can rest for next week's visit from South Carolina. A close score in the third quarter will raise red flags.

Kickoff is six hours away.  My final preview of the matchups and a prediction for the #Mizzou opener:

COACHING: The knee-jerk reaction is that Barry Odom coaches in the SEC and Dave Steckel coaches in the Missouri Valley and that's the end of it. But that's too shallow. Odom's first year didn't go well. He's made quite a few changes. We probably won't be able to tell how many of them worked in week one. Steckel has steadily improved the Bears and talked a lot about getting the buy-in from his team. He doesn't have the horses to win this game, but that doesn't mean he's not doing a good job.

EDGE: EVEN

THE BOTTOM LINE: This shouldn't be a game. Even a mediocre SEC team has more talent at every position than a mediocre FCS team. Missouri has the edge in every spot here and it's not all that close. This is a payday for the Bears and a win for the Tigers. You can learn something from this game in only one way and it isn't good. If the starters are on the field to start the fourth quarter and the game is any semblance of doubt at halftime, something has gone drastically wrong.

How much can Mizzou's defense improve in a season?

No, wait.

How much better can it be in one week?

Seeing the lack of progress made this offseason, when improving the defense was the story of the offseason, I can offer no reasons for optimism.

It's a bowl-or-bust season for the Tigers. And in Week 1, against an FCS opponent that has not had a winning season in seven years, Barry Odom's defense looked like a bust. And South Carolina comes to town in a week.

The Tigers won, by the way. They beat Missouri State 72-43 because the offense played like it was facing a team that hadn't beat an FBS opponent since 1990.
