I think it may depend on who gets the lucky draw with the weather...if there is one.  Last week at the Scottish Open the guys who played Thursday afternoon got the shaft because the wind picked up to over 30 mph.  Mickelson, for instance, shot 76 Thursday afternoon and 11 under the rest of the tournament.  If he plays in the morning on Thursday and shoots 69 he ties Noren for the lead.  Considering he shot 69, 70, and 66 the other three rounds there's a decent chance he could have done that well or better.

I'll go with Jason Day, Spieth, Patrick Reed...and Mickelson.  It's supposed to be breezy and wind is McIlroy's kryptonite.  Well, that and putting.  Dustin Johnson?  I'm not going to pick him just because I don't like him.

Of course there will be some European Tour guy wearing flamboyant clothes who hangs around into Saturday.  Maybe even the Spanish dude who wears a bandana around his neck as if he expects a giant dust storm to arrive and any moment and may need to pull it up to cover his mouth and nose...

I've heard he's playing the week before the Olympics, you know, to get acclimated to the conditions. Anyway, back to the Open, I think the winner comes from someone not in the top 50 in rankings, probably a foreigner.

whiskeytangofoxtrot!

why on earth has no one pick Bernhard Langer yet??

I'm going with Langer, then Garrigus as my backup

I think Rory's problem is Rory.  The announcers were talking during his last tournament how he was in the process of changing his swing and is having a hard time fitting all the new pieces together.  I just have a hard time understanding how a guy can win 4 majors in a short span of time and then start screwing with his swing.  For all his obvious talents, I'm beginning to think he's a head case.

Yall have it all wrong on Rory.  Dude has since found him a real good looking piece and he is now more interested/fascinated with it and life with her(either just got married or is about too) than the golf game.  If you are wondering who she is, she is the girl that made sure he was on time a few years back and organizes the police escort to get him there...  hmmm maybe she was always a piece... Good for him!

Golf Channel coverage begins at 12:30 a.m. tomorrow morning, with the actual golf beginning I think around 2:00 a.m.  Anybody planning to set the alarm, get up and watch?  I've done it the last couple of years; not sure if I will this year since we're on vacation.  (Or maybe in honor of the British, I should say we're on holiday)

I'll DVR it and try to watch parts of it (the players I am interested in seeing) after coming in from work in the afternoon.  I'll try not to hear how it went, which means I won't be logging onto this board.

agreed....but for this The Open, the man below is going to win by daylight....I think by 6 or more....order will be restored at Troon...winning score to par....McIlroy on (-17)

So the Open tees off here at 12:30 AM. What time is it there in Scotland?

How the heck did that putt not go in?  A foot from the hole it was rolling dead center.

It's just the first round, but so far I have the top two.

It's really good for the game of golf when Phil plays well. He is one of only a handful that move the audience needle when they do well.

As an old man myself, I'm rooting for him big time!

PonderinHog

that eagle by the world's most interesting man wasn't bad, either.  Nor was that putt from off the green few minutes ago.   Who was that?

EastexHawg

Get a good score in the books today, then hang on tomorrow.  The back nine will be brutal in the second round.  Mickelson has a three stroke lead now.  If he could shoot 71 tomorrow he might lead by even more.

EastexHawg

Watched the replay of Phil's putt a couple more times just now.  Something supernatural happened because there is no way that ball wasn't going dead center into the cup.  Either that or it hit a spike mark or something.

It gently broke left for 15 feet, 10 inches...then two inches from the lip took a 45 degree turn to the right.  Unbelievable.

I wonder if Johnny Miller, Tiger, Greg Norman and the others who have shot 63 popped the cork on a bottle of champagne, ala the '73 Dolphins, when that putt lipped out.

My absolute favorite thing about watching the Open is how relatable these guys become to us when in the sand. Spieth just hacked out of the bunker on 8, only for it to roll all the way back around and in the back door again. Makes them look human.

This is one of those years where luck of the draw is huge.  Right now every player in the top 15 played this morning.  Afternoon guys are battling sideways rain and 35 mph winds.  Phil's been on the bad side of the draw before, but not this year.

No joke.  He's hit the best of both days so far while Jordan, Rory and Jason have hit the worst of the two.  Those guys can deal with the rain but the wind is a mother, even for them.

Of the top 21 guys on the leaderboard, exactly one played in the afternoon today - Rory at -2 and T-15.  I'd say the weather has effectively eliminated half the field.

Well I was up early so started watching. Speith started out looking good like last year Speith. Then he missed one little putt, got frustrated I guess and did it three holes in a row. The last one for double bogey. His caddy needs to slap him around a little and tell him to back up and take a breath. He was making some great drives and iron shots, just rushing those short putts. He should be one under. I guess I know now what's been going on with him.
"If you are able, save for them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go.
Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always. Take what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own.

And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind.

I know he's going through some tough times but Spieth's game, after watching him now for a couple of years, depends on that Scotty Cameron putter. Spieth MUST be putting quite well to be in contention because his ball striking has always seemed suspect. This year he's not rolling in every 15 footer he takes a look at. I'll never forget the look on Henrik Stenson's face in last year's British Open when Spieth ran in a 30 footer for birdie on either 16 or 17 to stay in the tournament. Henrik's look was not one of admiration, but one of , "when that putter cools down, we'll see what you've got". Of course Henrik is quite likely jealous because that's (putting) the weakness of his game. I just think this year, Masters included, proved that if Justin isn't rolling in everything he looks at, he's still better than most, but not the superstar he is thought to be. I hope he proves me wrong because we need a bevy of great young American players.
The long Grey line will never fail our country.
