This is why he should stay IMO, and if he made as much improvement in his game as he did last year he would become a lottery. 44 in red last night is who he needs to become.

He's a borderline lottery pick already, with a well defined draft ceiling, no matter how long he stays.    When it comes to basketball, it would be foolish to remain;  the only reasons to stay are not related to money or his basketball future.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

They have to do what they have to do.  Good luck to great Hogs.  I'd personally really like to see how good they could be next year though.

Saw two way too early basketball rankings for next year and the Hogs weren't ranked in either one of them.  Guess they figure they ain't coming back either.
There are all kinds of Lions, Tigers and Bears in college football.  But there is only one Razorback.  Beware the Tusks!!! They are coming

Yeah, that is what they are guessing. Rothstein and Parrish of CBS both released theirs, so I am assuming that is what you are referring to. Both said they figure Portis is gone. I think with 1 of the 2 we have potential to be a borderline top 25 team, depending on which players develop and how the freshmen play coming in. Lose both, and we will likely be a middle of the pack NIT team.

Does anybody have class with them?  If they're still going to class, that'd be a good sign, one would think.

I saw Razorback basketball tweeted a photo that said something along the lines of being back to work. It had the team working out together in the weight room, and Qualls and Portis were both there. That doesn't mean anything, though.

As far as money goes, waiting a year could actually pay dividends.  Their will be an influx of new money, not in the 2015-2016 but 2016-2017 season.  The union also voted against smoothing which means cap will jump all at once.  First season increase in cap money is projected at $20 mil or more per team.  For a guy in the 10-13 range it could mean +$3 million or more over the 4 year contract. Still means you wait an extra year til contract number 2 which is where big money kicks in if you are good or even decent.  Whether he goes this year or next their will most likely be a new CBA before that first contract is up anyway.

Little known fact, but prior to settling on Guantanamo, the Pentagon wanted to house terror suspects at War Memorial Stadium.  It was deemed to be cruel and unusual punishment and in violation of the Geneva Convention.

Well Bobby is still going to class if anyone was wondering.

Actually, waiting a year makes significantly *less* sense, because of that.     You don't want markets to work towards equilibrium for an additional season,  with the new money.     Salary cap spikes coincide with  spikes in contract values, and general overpayment.

Thanks for adding that.  Every time Portis' future is discussed, posters reference the "big money 2nd contract" as though it is a given.  It is not.  That big 2nd contract has to be earned with solid or better play against NBA competition.  Plenty of 1st rd picks don't wind up with large 2nd contracts in the NBA.

Nah. Every single transfer can score. The shots will come once the pecking order gets sorted out.

The most respected draft website, NBA Draft Express, has Portis going 18th to the Oklahoma City Thunder with a salary of $1.37 million.

Durant, Westbrook and a million bucks? Sign me up.

Please stop with the bad math. There is no financial reason for Portis to stay.

By staying, Portis would lose a year off his NBA development and a year off his net NBA earnings, which will likely be average out to around $5-8 million per year. If you are good, the team options you, and you don't get into big money until after year 4. Portis just loses a year off his peak career earnings, which given the likely length of his career, would be nearly 10% of his primary life earnings.

What happens if there is no second contract? Is there some sort of guarantee I am unaware of? He may only get one contract.

What happens if he gets injured playing in college

True....he may get injured next year if he comes back no doubt but that goes to my point I made in another thread, maybe it was this one I can't remember, but how is it ok to look four years into the future discussing long term and second contracts while at the same time talking about possibly getting injured next year? There may not be a second contract 3 or 4 years down the road just like he may get injured if he comes back to school one more year. Just don't know what the future holds.

If there is no second contract, then he's got millions in earnings already in-pocket, and the easy option of returning to get a degree.

Let's also not pretend that not getting a second contract is that common for a 1st rounder;  8 of the 30 guys from the 2011 draft had *multi-year* extensions, rather than team options for season 4, when the deadline for multi year extensions passed on Halloween.      One isn't eligible because of playing overseas, and only one is out of basketball, mostly by their own choice (Vesely), and one other is in the D-League.

Everyone else is likely to get a 2nd contract.
