Anyone know anything about him in minors or if he is still playing?  I just read he was suspended for taking amphetamine. He was always one of my favorite players here so just wondered if anyone had info on him. Thanks

I hate to hear this and I am truly shocked. Appears he was one of 6 suspended about January 17 for 50 games. He was in the Red Sox organization.

PintailKiller

It will be wait and see after his suspension is up.  Red Sox could give him another chance, but I'd think he'll get released.

I was wondering if it is situation like Chris davis and he was taking stuff for medical condition.

RazorPiggie

Medicine for his ADD when he had a long drive ahead of him one night and was getting sleeping. Red Sox plan to keep him according to some family.

Correct. Amphetamine sounds awful, but it is just Adderall (not meth or some super hard drug). Obviously could be seen as a performance enhancer in baseball, so correctly outlawed, but makes it hard for those with actual medical issues. IIRC the waiver process in the NFL and possibly the MLB simply does not exist - ie you cannot take it, even with a medical diagnosis.

Adderall is amphetamine

Same thing Howard was caught with, correct?

Players in the past have gotten notes from their doctors and got an exemption.  I don't know if the rule has changed.  Adam Laroche was the first case I had heard of.

ADD is a completely made up medical condition. The parents that shove that stuff down their kids throats ought to be ashamed

My parents that gave medication to my little brother at the advice of our doctor will be sure to note your opinion. Especially since it helped him concentrate and improve his grades dramatically.

Edit - BTW I apologize for bringing drama to EI. But the quoted statement above is reckless and incorrect.

Why don't you try and convince my wife who is a second grade elementary teacher?  You are flat out wrong dude.
The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.

While add does actually exist, it is often over diagnosed and medicine for it is over prescribed. But there are definite cases and Kids that require the medication to function properly.

And it's a recreational drug used both in studying, and partying. My college aged kids said it's very common on campuses.

It's now called ADHD and you don't have any idea what you are talking about.  Your brain is an organ just like your heart is.  The problem is you don't go to general practitioner for heart meds, you go to a specialist.   Same can be said of Adderall.

This is ignorant. I will concede that it is misdiagnosed often, but to say it doesn't exist is foolish.

Exactly correct.  It is often used to "cram" and keep extremely focused on something by people who aren't really in need.

But more times than not having an iPad in their face from 6 months on and basically zero discipline is more of the issue. It's very overdiagnlzed IMO.

It is interesting how the effects of Adderall are so different between those who are really affected by ADHD and those who are not.  A calming, euphoric effect for those with ADHD.  More of a "speed" affect for non-ADHD people.

ADD & ADHD are similar, but not identical. ADD is Attention Deficit Disorder. ADHD is Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. Both exist, but I have witnessed the diagnosis overused.

From a pharmacist perspective, medicines for this disease are needed. It affects the kids, parents, and teachers. There are problems with over prescribing especially to teenagers that can control the disease.  It is a commonly abused drug now and has serious side affects to the brain and can change personalities. Just needs to be used in certain situations and not at all times. Just my two cents, not that they are worth much. And in Spoons case, it is not a drug that should be taken just because you are getting sleepy.  I guess it is better than falling asleep at the wheel, but not exactly the use it is meant for. There's a whole lot more that could be said, but not the place.

Well it gets a lot uglier than this, this rivals the OxyContin abuse in our society today.

To be clear, people abuse morphine. That doesn't mean pain isn't real.
