My college roommate is a pit boss at a casino in Tunica who had a lot of interactions with Cal when he was at Memphis. He said Cal was one of the nicest most down to earth people he had met in 15 years. Take if fwiw. That changed my mind about the guy. He could have been the biggest jerk to people and wasn't.

I have had the pleasure to meet four non-Arkansas basketball coaches in my life.  Roy Williams, Dean Smith, Coach K and Coach Cal.  I will say without a doubt that Coach Smith was by far the nicest and most polite coach that I talked to but Coach Cal was a close second.  It was during a break at a AAU game and I just introduced myself.  He stood and talked with me about college basketball and etc for probably 20 minutes.  Coach Smith and K, I met when I was in Carolina.  Visited the Dean Dome, during the off season, Coach Smith invited me and a couple of other guys up to his office and showed us around the facility.

Calipari is a good coach and a GREAT recruiter.  I can appreciate that.  I still don't like Kentucky.

Calipari and UK get a lot of hate for the state of college basketball. That to me is very misguided.
Calipari didn't create the rules. He is actually on record that he doesn't like the one-and-done rule.
The fact is, he is simply a phenomenal recruiter. He was recruiting this way at Memphis. He signed Amare Stodemire from Orlando. Who the heck would go to Memphis if you're him? He's won big at UMass, Memphis, and UK.
His coaching is underrated too. He clearly has those players' respect.
I choose to give him a pass on the cheating accusations and will just think he's a great salesman. As with any salesman, yes, there is a greasy factor, a little too smooth, but that's all.

Some people like slimy boiled okra too. I don't mean this in a good way at all. Slimy is the key word. He is totally in bed with the dirtiest part of basketball. The AAU handlers, agents etc... In fact you could say he has a in or monopoly on the dirtiest part of the so called amateur basketball and that is no exaggeration. As far as him being a winner, the truth is that there are a number of coaches just as good or better than he is in teaching the game. His immersion and delving into the sliminess of AAU ball goes back much much earlier than his Kentucky days, all the way to his U Mass days.

You've given me hope again.  I was beginning to think Cal was a great guy with all the love in this thread.

I particularly like Cal saying, I'm against the one and done in college basketball, which is like a Ramora saying I hate Sharks.
