Boss Hog in the Arkansas

Whoever replaces Bielema should hire Pulaski Academy head coach Kevin Kelly as Arkansas Special Teams Coordinator. The man is a genius when it comes to special teams and has several exotic punts and onside kicks that he could dial up for the hogs.
That's right, you don't want to be the man to replace the man.  You want to be the man to replace Rory Segrest.

He ain't leaving for a coordinating job. Especially a special teams coord.

True I'm wondering why a smaller college hasn't taken a chance on him, Maybe some have offered and he is happy doing what he is doing.

Why would a high school coach not be interested in a coordinating position at a P5 SEC school?

If he ever had any interest in coaching at a college level he would be dumb to turn down an offer. It would get his foot in the door of college coaching.

hogcam

Obviously not going to happen, but I would love bringing Venables as head coach with Kevin Kelly as offensive coordinator.

LRHawg

he's waiting on that UALR football head coaching job to open up.

Kelly probably makes a killing on the clinic circuit as a speaker. Probably no need for him to leave.

Why does he have exotic punts? I thought his whole thing was that he never punts the ball.

Thoughts like this just kill me. KK is a good high school coach with good kids but his gimmicky crap will not work on Saturday or Sunday (as some of the local so called experts seem to think). His no punt stuff should have cost PA a game on Friday to a mediocre PV team.

I know nothing about this guy other than I've heard of him through Hogville and a few blips, but is his only gimmick that he doesn't punt? Or does he run some kind of offensive scheme that's innovative?

He is "moneyball" for football. Runs an exotic spread offense.

I'm pretty sure he would kickoff and punt the ball if he was the head coach of a big time college program. Could be wrong but I don't think so.

He is an offensive genius and is very underrated for how good his defenses are.

He said he wouldn't change no matter if he was the head coach oF Alabama or in the NFL.

Yeah, I think he is stubborn but he's also pretty smart. If he wanted to stay at that level he would change those parts of his coaching strategy. The defenses in college and the pros are a little bit better than high school defenses.

That wouldnt make any sense. If you have seen the interviews and specials done on his thought process, seems doubtful he would change it by moving up a level. Fans on the other hand...

Hawg414

he never punts or kicks off.  he goes for it on 4th down, theoretically, even if he is on his own 2 yard line.  and every kickoff is an onside kick.  he has "run the numbers" and decided, statistically, the odds are in your favor to do both.

thats why the little fast receiver at auburn was a recruited walk on as an "onside kick specialist."  bc all he has ever done is onside kicks.

JaketheSnake

It's easy to look like a special teams genius when you have better horses than everyone else.  Onside kick and never punt vs Bama and see what that gets you!

He should coach one year as a regular assistant first

That's why people hate Gus. All Gus had to do was swallow his pride for one year as a regular assistant and not piss and moan about being mistreated

B Ray

I heard he turned down the OC position when Gus was first hired at Auburn!!

ShadowTheHedgehog

They never punt, kick off or kick extra point. What special teams? Onside kicks?  If we hire him hire him as a coach - try something unseen in the sec.

It actually makes a lot of sense in high school. Punts probably net you maybe, 25 yards difference between where you were before going for it. Most kickoffs are returned to close to the 40 yard line, onside usually gets recovered right at the 50, so giving up the 10 yards for a chance to get the ball isn't a terrible idea.

However, no way it would work in college or NFL. Field position is too important at those levels.

No way it would work in college football though.

A lot of coaches don't want the commitment of travel, recruiting and endless hours of work.

That is the thing. PA recruits as well as some colleges.

parallaxpig

He is a system or plug and play coach. Uses analytics to his advantage. As far as Arkansas goes, we need a system guy. Never gonna have top recruiting classes.

You know everybody runs some version of the spread now. So what will be the new Fun/Gun, Air Raid, Wildcat, etc........Maybe some new up/comer will embrace analytics.
