Mailbag: How many recruits can Tennessee sign in Class of 2018? http://sec.news/2DYlwih   #VFL

NCAA passed a rule this past summer that cracked down on over-signing in classes. The intended desire is to keep schools to 25 allotted scholarships in a recruiting cycle.

My thought is coach Jeremy Pruitt and the new coaching staff plan to get as close to the 25 number as they can. Right now, it is more a question of finding enough prospects who fit the new standard and are still open to the recruiting process.

Pruitt was hired at the beginning of December. This gave him roughly two months to reshuffle the recruiting board and find new prospects interested in the Vols.

He and the staff have done a better job than I think many imagined to this point. Tennessee holds 18 commitments, with 14 already signed.

Pruitt says another player has left team

Head coach Jeremy Pruitt revealed during his press conference Wednesday that linebacker Will Ignont "has left the team for personal reasons."

Ignont is one of three players to leave the program this week. On Tuesday, reports surfaced that linebacker Shannon Reid and wide receiver Jacquez Jones had both entered the NCAA transfer portal.

Former Tennessee LB Shanon Reid has found his new football home. Illinois State, an FCS program, announced Reid among its signees on Wednesday.

Reid, a native of Fort Myers, Florida, originally joined the Volunteers in 2017. The former 3-star outside linebacker recruit played in seven games as a true freshman and nine as a true sophomore (2018). This year, as a junior, Reid played in four games before deciding to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

By playing in only four games, Reid can take a redshirt for the 2019 season and preserve a season of eligibility. Also, by transferring to an FCS program he does not have to sit out the 2020 season. He will be considered a redshirt junior next fall with two seasons remaining.

Reid made 17 total tackles in two-plus seasons at UT.

In-state prospect Darion Williamson announces he has decommitted from Tennessee

Brownsville native Darion Williamson announced on Monday that he is officially decommitted from Jeremy Pruitt's Volunteer program.

Taking this news into consideration, the Razorbacks could be in sitting in a good position to land the 6-foot-3, 190-pound receiver from Tennessee. However, it should be noted that Williamson's primary recruiter for Tennessee was former running back's coach David Johnson.

Volunteers now don't hold a single commitment in the 2020 recruiting cycle heading into National Signing Day but have signed 21 recruits and landed transfers Cade Mays from Georgia, Velus Jones Jr. from USC and Miles Jones from Nebraska. The Jones both play receiver and Tennessee signed three high school players that could play receiver for the Volunteers in 2020.

Vols have apparently had 1 player move from defense to offense and 1 player change positions on the defensive side of the ball.

Class of 2021 defensive back/athlete Nate Evans of Frank W. Cox High School in Virginia Beach, Va., posted on his Twitter account that he has committed to N.C. State, officially parting ways with the Vols after being committed to them for almost seven months.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Evans originally committed to Tennessee on Nov. 10 during a Sunday visit with the Vols, choosing them over scholarship offers from a dozen other teams at the time, including Florida State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Kentucky, Maryland, Pittsburgh and Baylor.

Tennessee, which currently has the nation's No. 2 recruiting class in the 247Sports Composite team rankings, now is left with 23 commitments for the 2021 class, including at least four other projected defensive backs...

The numbers are working out for Pruitt even in troubled times.

Jeremy Pruitt announces senior running back Tim Jordan no longer member of Tennessee's team

Senior player no longer on Tennessee's roster.

Tennessee is moving forward without senior running back Tim Jordan.

This news was announced by head coach Jeremy Pruitt on Thursday following the running back's recent arrest in Florida. According to the police report, the running back was stopped by police for a traffic violation and upon a search of the vehicle, a firearm and marijuana was found in the vehicle.

This incident took place while players were away from campus. Tennessee's players have since returned to campus but Jordan was not among them.

While losing a senior player with several years of experience is obviously not ideal, Tennessee is currently over the 85-man scholarship limit for the 2020.

The numbers are working out for Coach Pruitt even in troubled times.

Vols veteran defender Brandon Davis announces he's entering the NCAA transfer portal

Vols are set to lose some depth ahead of fall camp.

Veteran defender Brandon Davis (New Orleans, La.) announced that he was entering the NCAA transfer portal.

Tennessee safety signed with the Vols in the class of 2018. Exiting high school, he was ranked as the nation's No. 158 overall cornerback and the state of Louisiana's No. 72 overall prospect.

Davis didn't record any statistics at Tennessee.

The numbers are working out for Jeremy Pruitt.

McGhee has viewed Tennessee as one of his top college choices for months. Almost a year to the day he received a scholarship offer from the Vols, he finally decided that his mind was set on them.

The four-star Class of 2021 cornerback from Pensacola (Fla.) Catholic High School, who's a top-100 prospect nationally, confirmed Thursday afternoon that he has committed to Tennessee, choosing the Vols over Ole Miss, Georgia, Alabama and Miami.

The 6-foot-1, 163-pound McGhee gave Tennessee its 24th known commitment for the 2021.

Vols extended an offer to him on July 31, 2019, and have stayed in frequent contact with him over the past several months. His stock started to rise in recent months, with Georgia, USC, Miami and Alabama all having joined the race for him since early May.

But perhaps no one has made him more of a priority than Tennessee.

McGhee admitted last month that the Vols and Ole Miss were the two teams recruiting him hardest, and their persistent efforts finally paid off.

Our nation's No. 1 JUCO running back has decided to decommit from Tennessee.

On Saturday, Tiyon Evans backed off his verbal pledge to the Vols.

"After having a conversation with my mother I've decided to De-commit from the University of Tennessee and open my recruitment back up. I graduate in December and have 3 years (of) eligibility."

After losing commitments from five-star linebacker Terrance Lewis and four-star defensive back Damarius McGhee in recent days, three-star defensive lineman Darrell Jackson has just announced his decision to back off his commitment to Pruitt's Tennessee program.
Jackson had been committed to Tennessee's class since February.

For what it's worth, all three of the prospects that have decommitted from Tennessee's 2021 recruiting class all hail from Florida. That suggests the inability to host or visit with recruits — due to the NCAA mandating this a dead period due to COVID —

Following these decommitments, Tennessee's 2021 recruiting class currently has 24 pledges with the Early Signing Period just over a week from starting. The class ranks as the nation's No. 14 class and the No. 5 class in the SEC.

Less than an hour after Tennessee made the decision to fire Jeremy Pruitt following an internal investigation into alleged recruiting violations within the program, the Volunteers have already suffered a decommitment.

Four-star receiver Jordan Mosley from McGill Toolen High School of Mobile, Ala., announced his decision to part ways with the Volunteers on Monday. Mosley was the highest-rated prospect committed but unsigned in Tennessee's 2021 recruiting class.

"First off, I would like to thank Coach Pruitt and Coach Tee Martin for giving me the opportunity to further my education and athletic career at the next level," Mosley shared. "After further conversations with God, family, and coaches, I have made a decision to decommit from the University of Tennessee and explore other options. This wasn't easy to do but it's a business decision that I feel is best for me."

The 6-foot, 190-pound Alabama native was rated as the No. 52 receiver in the nation and the No. 9 overall prospect in the nation (sic) for the 2021

Now that news is official as Tennessee has released Brooks from his National Letter of Intent and his SEC agreement, freeing the Alabama native to sign with any program of his choosing.

6-foot-5, 250-pound Brooks signed with Tennessee after being rated as a four-star prospect, the No. 6 weakside defensive end and the No. 4 overall prospect from Alabama in the 2021.

Brooks' release comes the same week as Tennessee released four-star Georgia running back Cody Brown from his National Letter of Intent.

When Pruitt was still the head coach of the Vols, he did not publicly release that information during the period. It was only later revealed that Brooks had signed with Tennessee.
