So how's the SEC West going to shake out this fall?

Here are a few early predictions:
https://trib.al/dkZHLL2

QuoteBama: It's worth remembering that although the Crimson Tide won the national championship in 2017, it didn't win the SEC West. The personnel losses on defense -- particularly in the secondary --

Auburn: Though the season didn't end the way they wanted to, the Tigers had a memorable 2017, with wins over Alabama and Georgia. That resulted in a huge new contract for Gus Malzahn, who faces a slight rebuilding job this season. Most of the offensive line is gone, as is team MVP Kerryon Johnson and a number of key defensive players.

State: Boy, I really wanted to pick the Bulldogs to finish second, and if Dan Mullen had returned this season I might have. But I can't help but shake the feeling that a new coaching staff means they won't quite be ready for prime time.

A&M: How much difference can a serious coaching upgrade make? We'll find the answer to that question in the 2018 Aggies, who replace underachieving Kevin Sumlin with very well-paid Jimbo Fisher. The Aggies have to figure out an answer at quarterback and face a tough West schedule (at Alabama, at Auburn, at Mississippi State)...

LSU: If there's a controversial pick on this list, I guess it's the Tigers, whom I just don't see getting better in Year 2 of the Ed Orgeron experiment. LSU suffered its usual early exodus of players to the NFL and made a downgrade at offensive coordinator with Steve Ensminger replacing Matt Canada.

Arkansas: The Razorbacks were a disaster on both sides of the ball in 2017, leading to the ouster of the affable Bret Bielema. However, the school made what I believe was an excellent hire in Chad Morris, who should bring some offensive excitement back to Fayetteville.

Ole Miss: The Rebels were a pleasant surprise in the second half of 2017, rallying behind interim (now permanent) coach Matt Luke to finish 6-6, including a rout of Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl. Problem is, quarterback Shea Patterson and a number of other key players transferred out after Ole Miss was hit with a second year of postseason sanctions.

Urban Meyer finally weighs in on Florida's new football hire: 'The SEC East will feel Dan Mullen'

QuoteDuring a recent interview at Tim Tebow's charity golf outing in Jacksonville, Meyer expressed some confidence in the Gators' decision to bring in Dan Mullen as a replacement for Jim McElwain–

"It's great for Florida, a great hire," Meyer said. "[Mullen] knows the landscape, knows Florida ... the SEC East will feel Dan Mullen."

Meyer, who was Mullen's boss at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida prior to the former offensive coordinator spreading his wings as the head coach at Mississippi State, likely would be expected to shower praise upon a long-time friend. After all, the two won national titles together in 2006 and 2008 with Tebow himself helping guide the Gators offensive attack.

Mullen won't have the luxury of a Heisman Trophy quarterback...

USA Today Sports handicapper: Georgia 'will be favored in every game' https://sptz.us/2LaUK8P

Quote"They will be favored in every game," Sheridan said. "I hear on your show and other shows, 'Well, South Carolina is improved.' They may be, but Georgia will be about a two-touchdown favorite, closer to 14 than 12 over South Carolina — at South Carolina. It will be two-touchdown (favorites) over Florida."

Sheridan added the Bulldogs should be a "double-digit favorite over everyone at home except Auburn," but should still be a possible "3 ½ or 4-point favorite," as well as being favored by either "6 or 7″ at LSU.

"This is pretty unusual for Georgia to be favored. I know it's unusual, I don't remember it happening," Sheridan said. "I see Georgia winning 11 games."

A&M, South Carolina could be roadblocks to Alabama, Georgia reaching SEC title game

QuoteFor the 14 football information directors who annually vote in the division and overall spring polls, Jimbo Fisher's first Texas A&M team is their shiny new West Division contender that's supposed to push Alabama and Auburn instead of LSU for a change. The Crimson Tide is picked to win the West with 36 points, having received six of seven first-place votes. Auburn, with the only other first-place vote, is picked second with 31 points. The third-place Aggies received 25 points based on two second-place votes, three thirds and one fourth. LSU and Mississippi State tied for fourth in the West with 19 points each. Ole Miss is picked fifth with 11 points and Arkansas is last with six points.

In the East, Georgia is the anointed one with 36 points, based on its six first-place votes. South Carolina is second with 30 points. The Gamecocks, who finished  9-4 and second in the East with a 5-3 record last season, had the only other first-place ballot, along with four seconds and one third.

The two East rivals lock up in an early division showdown Sept. 8 in Columbia.

Missouri and Kentucky tied for third  in the East with 20 points, followed by Florida with 19, Vanderbilt with 11 and Tennessee with eight.

Like Arkansas, Jeremy Pruitt's first-year Vols didn't get a lot of love from the football information voters, who voted them last in the East. Last place in the division has usually been a Vandy thing.

In the overall poll, Alabama topped the league with eleven first place votes and two seconds for 167 points. Georgia followed with 157 points with its three first-place votes, nine seconds and one fourth. Auburn totaled 144 points for third with two second-place votes, 10 third-places and one fourth.

When all 14 football information directors voted in the overall poll -- and not asked to break down just their division -- LSU was picked fourth with 115 points. Then comes fifth-place Texas A&M with 111 points, sixth-place South Carolina with 108, seventh-place Mississippi State with 100 points, eighth-place Florida with 95 and Missouri and Kentucky in a tie for ninth with 61 points apiece.

Ole Miss (48), Tennessee (45), Arkansas (40) and Vanderbilt (22) round out the overall poll.

A school could not vote for itself.

This group picked Tennessee to finish last in the 2017-18 preseason basketball poll.

There are good reasons Georgia fans have high expectations in 2018:

QuoteWith just under eight weeks to go until the 2018 season opens, the Dawgs are the consensus favorite in the SEC East, and many prognosticators think they're a strong contender for another shot at the College Football Playoff. Quite a few college football observers see Georgia vying with Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Oklahoma for those four playoff spots.

Georgia fans, naturally, have taken these lofty forecasts to heart — to the point that merely winning the Eastern Division again would be seen by some a disappointment.

While sky-high optimism is pretty much the default setting for most of Bulldog Nation this time of year, there are good reasons for fans to think their expectations and/or hopes are justified in 2018.

Of course, there also are a few reasons that fans perhaps ought to temper their optimism just a tad.

Despite all those reasons for optimism, there also are valid concerns at this point. Among them ...

No Chubb and Michel. While Swift was impressive in limited use last year, we haven't seen yet how he'll handle carrying the increased load as the primary back. And, you don't lose the experience of a couple of record-setting senior tailbacks without feeling some impact.

No Roquan Smith. The entire starting linebacking corps is gone, most notably the All-American Smith, and the Dawgs aren't likely to find the "next Roquan" this season.

SEC power rankings (from a gambling perspective) https://trib.al/UI1H5Qq
QuoteAmong handicappers, power rankings are simple. If Team A ranks higher than Team B, Team A should be the betting favorite on a neutral field as of that day. Good gambling power rankings involve months of research and number-crunching, yet can change at a moment's notice...

No. 14 Vanderbilt (No. 72, 3.5 wins)
The Commodores need to win a pair of probably-close games in Weeks 1 and 2 because I have them favored just once the rest of the year.

No. 13 Tennessee (No. 61, 5 wins)
No-nonsense new coach Jeremy Pruitt will need patience, because I don't expect a bowl appearance. I project Tennessee as a double-digit underdog in 6 games, and the Vols may have just 3 wins before facing Kentucky, Missouri and Vanderbilt in consecutive weeks to close the season.

No. 7 LSU (No. 27, 6.5 wins)
It's hard to find more than 25 teams that should be favored over LSU. But the schedule is B-R-U-T-A-L.

No. 4 Mississippi State (No. 16, 8.5 wins)
I project the Bulldogs as favorites in 10 of 12 games, with four by a margin of a touchdown or less. If you geek out for big uglies at the line of scrimmage...

No. 1 Alabama (No. 1, 11 wins)
Alabama will be a double-digit favorite in 11 of 12 games, and I made the Tide a 7.5-point favorite against Auburn in the Iron Bowl.

College football odds shift on news of Urban

QuoteOhio State's odds to win the CFP national championship went from +850 (17/2) to +750 (15/2).

With that move, Alabama's odds moved from +200 (2/1) to +210 (21/10.

Lastly, Ohio State sees a slight increase in making the four-team playoff from +130 (13/10) to +120 (6/5).

"These moves can be attributed to the influx of action on Ohio State as well as the fact that we believed that there would be much stiffer penalties for coach Meyer and most of the prices factored in that he would be missing a significant part of the season," Bradley explained. "With him only missing three games they should win easily, most odds on Ohio State have moved back to where they were before this story broke and some even beyond that."

College football bowl projections

QuoteCFP
Cotton: Bama v. Notre Dame

Sugar: UGa v. OU  (You can't spell Sugar without "U-G-A")

Peach: LSU v. WVU

LSU is projected to be 9-3, while Kentucky and Florida are now each projected to be 10-2.  This is that case I was talking about before.  I'm projecting LSU would get the nod because of strength of schedule.

These three teams each have two quality opponents in common.  They will have all defeated Mississippi State and lost to Georgia.  LSU will have also played projected ACC runner-up Miami, which they destroyed to start the season, and Alabama, of course.  The Crimson Tide provide that extra loss for the Tigers. LSU also has a win at Auburn.

Florida was able to play both Kentucky and LSU at home and split the games.  The Gators only have Georgia as a guaranteed ranked team remaining on their schedule, and they are one of the few FBS teams this season playing two FCS opponents. Kentucky, which lost at Texas A&M in overtime on Saturday, does not have a quality opponent in nonconference play.  The Gators and Wildcats each have an in-state rivalry game that is usually better than it appears to be this season. As such, I am sticking with LSU for that last spot in the New Year's Six games. For now.

There are currently 75 teams expected to be eligible for the 78 bowl bids available this season.

And the rest
