Every time I boot up my computer it tells me an 80 pin cable is not installed.  Although I have not checked yet to see what I have will it make much difference if an 80 pin cable is installed?

That's your HD cable, need to open up your machine and make sure ALL connections are securely connected.

But Douglas does it make a lot of difference between the two?

40 pin is old technology... very outdated.  It could also be your CD Rom or DVD drive, as well.
