QuoteHe wasn't arguing or debating a call.

That's the main reason Auburn coach Gus Malzahn wasn't tagged with a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty earlier this season, according to SEC director of officials Steve Shaw.

Early in Auburn's 14-6 loss to Dabo Swinney's Clemson Tigers, Malzahn was on the field trying to get the attention of the field judge. Strength and conditioning coach Ryan Russell went after him to bring him back to the sidelines.

"That was not a situation where he was debating a decision," Shaw said Wednesday. "He had drawn up a play, just making sure the officials had remembered that play in enforcement. He was not arguing or debating.

"I've seen it from our TV perspective. He wasn't debating the call. I asked the officials and he was not debating or criticizing the call in any way."

The biggest problem with the new rule, which states an official can issue an instant 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct when a coach encroaches on the field to protest or otherwise demonstrate disagreement with an officiating decision, is the full understanding of it.

"We really want the coaches to stay in the white," Shaw explained. "But the rule didn't say anytime they leave the coach's box, it's a foul, only to debate or criticize and official's decision.

SEC director of officials Steve Shaw on LSU-Mississippi State offensive PI, sideline infractions

QuoteShaw joined the weekly SEC teleconference to talk about targeting, replay, sideline infractions by coaches and offensive pass interference.

First, some numbers to crunch through the first three weeks of the season:

5 targeting calls, all were confirmed
Of the 5, 2 targeting calls were initiated from the booth
3 targeting calls were confirmed through three weeks of last season

"There isn't a big enough sample size to really translate," said Shaw, who added there have been 55 targeting calls nationally as opposed to 35 last season.

    51 reviews this season
Of the 51, 23 have been reversed.
.82 reviews per game have been reversed this season

"Guys on the field are doing a pretty good job," he said.

0 head coaches flagged for sideline infraction.
"A couple of assistants" have been flagged.

Shaw didn't specify who the assistants are but said the rule is working.

"The rule is doing exactly what the rules committee intended it to do," he explained. I think we've seen a positive change with our interaction with our coaches. They've stayed pretty much in the boundary.

"Coaches have adjusted. We've had a coach (walk out on the field and) ask a  question, but that's not the intent (of the rule)," he said.

Shaw was asked, a couple of times, about offensive pass interference...
