Could Oklahoma play playoff spoiler in 2024?

by: Jesse Simonton

QuoteSEC will welcome two new programs to the league this fall, but while Texas has sucked up all the oxygen in the conference realignment deck shuffling, Oklahoma quietly has one of the most interesting teams in the country in 2024.

Coming off a 10-3 season in Year 2 under Brent Venables, the Sooners will make the transition to a new conference with a new starting quarterback (former 5-star phenom Jackson Arnold), a pair of new coordinators (former North Texas head coach Seth Littrell with Joe Jon Finely and Zac Alley at DC) and five new starting offensive linemen.

Oklahoma's schedule is brutal, with six games against preseason Top 15 teams (Tennessee, Texas, Ole Miss, Missouri, Alabama and LSU) — four away from Memorial Stadium.

Quote from: incHOGnito on Yesterday at 06:58:04 pmI think we have a better chance to keep runs off the board than we do to score them. With the way our collective DHs have performed, why not just throw Wilmsmeyer out there and at least have our best trio of defensive outfielders?

I feel pretty confident that with Wilmsmeyer in center, Holt in left and Diggs in right, we probably take 4-5 of UK's runs off the board between Saturday's and Sunday's games.

We stop them from scoring in the second on Saturday, and who knows, maybe we are able to hold them off.

100% agree with the outfield lineup. Wilmsmeyer in center is a must. Defense and pitching will be what wins us a championship if that happens.

Remember... this is Halverson's 2nd season. She absolutely struggled last year, especially at the beginning. This is Carter's first year. I think their first years are pretty similar. Now this is on memory. I didn't look up stats.

I'm also wondering on this one since I've seen a lot of Kentucky comments on wanting this guy hardcore. I'm not saying we need a second Richmond on the team just to beat Kentucky from getting him, but I wouldn't be opposed to having a really talented player on our team that also continues the trend of being one that Kentucky really wanted.

Quote from: SwineFusion on Today at 08:28:15 amThere are 143 Division I men's swimming programs; each can offer up to 9.9 scholarships. So basically 1400 scholarships. Those scholies can be split, just as in baseball or track, so there are more than 1400 male swimmers, but it's not a huge number. Ten of the 14 current SEC schools have men's swimming; of the noobs, Texass does, Mobilehoma doesn't.

There are 200 D-I women's swimming programs with a scholarship limit of 14; again those are split between athletes as well. There are 12 current SEC women's programs. Again Texas does, OU doesn't.
Yeah, that's not many. Assuming some redshirting, it means roughly 300 freshmen per year, get paid to swim in college. My kid has a chance to be pretty good, but not top 300 good.

My daughter sang her way through college. With a combination of scholarships and a stipend she was paid for singing in the university's choirs I paid nothing for her education. Those opportunities are similar to what most smaller schools do for minor sports. They'll have a handful getting a stipend. The swim guy will work as a lifeguard at the university's pool. The soccer girl will tutor and do light clerical work around the coaches offices.

And most schools don't have a dedicated coach for those sports. That coach does work with and teach "regular " students. For most schools the minor sports
will continue as they always have.

The G-5 school's will have to find another source of revenue if they want to continue with their minor sports programs. But for 90% or more of schools those sports are not programs they're already clubs with a couple of school sponsored ringers here and there.

The middle group of schools will have some hard decisions to make for sure.

I saw where the very recent NBA/G-league invites may have taken J.Watkins off the table, just a couple of days after entering into the portal. Man this stuff is crazy fluid!

As it goes, for guys swim scholarships are exceedingly rare. If he swims in college, he will be doing it for the love of it.
