Williams met University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto while in town for the Blue-White spring game last month.

“We were just getting to know each other,” Williams said of Capilouto. “We were making some jokes with each other. He’s a really good person. He made me feel like he would look out for me if I went there.”

Aside from sharing jokes with the school president, the Kentucky coaching staff established a relationship that stuck with the Lawrenceville, Ga., native.

“I’m very close to the coaches and the entire staff there,” Williams told Kirschner. “They were one of the first teams to believe in me and took me in. I can trust them. That’s a big factor with me.”

Even after de-committing from Kentucky, the Wildcats stayed No. 1 in Williams’ mind. His announcement Monday confirmed that. Here’s what Williams told SEC Country in the weeks between his de-commitment and re-commitment.

“At this point, I need to get that feeling elsewhere,” Williams said. “I haven’t. I have that feeling at Kentucky. I feel like I belong there and why they’re No. 1.”

Williams isn’t the highest-ranked member of Kentucky’s 2018 class, but his recruitment had a conference-wide scope. He chose UK over Florida, Alabama, Georgia, LSU and several others. He’s ranked the No. 16 dual-threat quarterback in the country...

Bentley is Kentucky’s 10th commitment in the 2018 class. Wildcats lost a commitment from Florida wide receiver prospect Shocky Jacques-Louis on Sunday morning.

Tight ends coach Vince Marrow was the lead recruiter for Bentley as the Ohio-to-Kentucky pipeline keeps flowing. Bentley goes to Lakota West, the same school current Wildcats George Asafo-Adjei, Kyle Meadows and Kayaune Ross attended.

Bentley holds several SEC offers, including Bama, Florida, LSU, Tennessee and Missouri.

Kentucky’s 2018 class is ranked 25th in the country and fourth in the SEC...

Vince Marrow loves Urban Meyer

Since Meyer and Ohio State recruit nationally, that leaves good football players in Ohio for Marrow to recruit to Kentucky.

Sources tell KSR that when Reigelsperger informed the UK staff that he was planning to take an official visit to Minnesota on November 25, the two sides agreed to part ways. Unless something changes, the 2018 Kentucky Wildcats football recruiting class will not include one player signed directly out of a high school in Kentucky.

Quote
The 2017-18 UK men’s basketball roster does not have a recruited scholarship player from the commonwealth for what appears to be the first time ever.

Over the past two women’s basketball recruiting classes, the state of Kentucky has produced six players ranked in the national top 75 by ESPN’s HoopGurlz — four of them from outside Jefferson County. UK has signed only one.

Are we watching the flagship university’s hold on the state’s best prospects evaporate?

The answers differ by sport.

Football

Even with some high-profile recruiting misses in Damien Harris, Elijah Sindelar and Jedrick Wills, UK has mostly controlled its home state in recruiting since Mark Stoops became top Cat in 2013.

In the current recruiting class, UK only offered scholarships to three in-state prospects. Of those three, Trinity wide receiver Rondale Moore is committed to Texas; Bowling Green linebacker Justice Dingle is pledged to Georgia Tech; and Waggener defensive back Jairus Brents is thought to be headed out of state as well.

(UK is recruiting a junior college linebacker, Bryant Pirtle, who played at DeSales).

According to research by the Herald-Leader’s Ben Roberts, every UK football signing class dating to 1939 (when the available records began) has had an in-state player.

Yet high school coaches I spoke with Friday say not to make too much of this year’s expected UK oh-fer in home-state recruiting.

“I think this year is a one-off situation,” said Lexington Catholic Coach Mark Perry, a former UK player and graduate assistant. “I think (UK) goes very hard at Kentucky high schools. Guys like Coach (John) Schlarman (UK offensive line coach) and Dean Hood (UK special teams coordinator and former Eastern Kentucky head coach), too, they are very thorough in getting out in the state and identifying players.”

Boyle County Coach Chuck Smith, who spent eight years as a UK assistant under Rich Brooks and Joker Phillips, also cautions against “drawing too much from one year.
