Why would the Hogs show zero interest in signing the p.g. from Fayetteville H.S. who led them to a 30-0 record and a state championship? Courtney Fourtson shows promise, if he can get his head together, but couldn't Gulley at least be a nice pick-up for back-up p.g. purposes?

1836hog

he was not the point guard for FHS. and he was the 2nd best player on the team this year.

athunt

we dont need another small guard

? thats not the same Fayetteville I saw.  Who do you have above him, Cable Hogue? Gulley is a good PG and will be a good, not great college player.  I could see him backing up the point next year at OK State.  Where he has already signed? To answer your question we did recruit him, although he was a backup option to another good in state PG in AJ Walton.  Walton thought Baylor was the best fit for him, and OK State had been all over Fred since he was a SO.  I know he likes the Hogs though because I Have seen him at multiple games throughout the years.

you are nuts on the second part.

1836hog

they had a shooting guard, named Taylor Cochran i think, that seemed to be a better player than Gulley.

The 3 point specialist?  They had a great all around team, but Taylor Cochran is no where near the player Gulley is.  Cochran would be 3rd or 4th in my rankings.

I'll admit though I didn't see them play this year.  I've seen Gulley the last two years and in AAU ball.  He is the only one on there team that will be playing in a major DI conference.

I thought we recruited him but he chose to go elsewhere

well, if ky fires gillispie and hires ford maybe pel and the hogs will get a second chance.
Hoping the Hogs basketball fortunes change for the better this season.

Sad day in hog basketball when a 3* G will make or break us.

Isn't Gulley the kid that Stan Heath supposedly "offered" in the 5th grade and there was a little bit of a stink about it?   Turned out that he IS a good player and will definitely haunt Hog fans for  years to come.

Too many of these in staters get away in my opinion, however, there are always risks.

Sad day in Hog Basketball when you go 2-14 and dont go after guys like Gulley that strong. Passing on the local Fayetteville products doesn't look good. Especially when he signs with OSU! That's another Arkansas kid at OSU. James Anderson jumped to the Cowboys out of Junction City, Arkansas.

Funny how Pel and staff's recruiting class isn't impressive to the eyes of many, and how the idea of adding more small guards has been frowned upon, yet somehow landing a 6'2" (at best) 3* guard from Fayetteville is all the rage.

Wasn't interested in being a back-up and you can't blame him.

Gulley signed with OSU in November. We were undefeated at that time. We caN go after him till we're blue in the face but he is going to OSU.

Recruiting is normally a 3 year process. Remember that kids are getting g letters when they are in junior high now, so relationships are built early.

Wasn't Walton a higher priority target than Gulley?

Pork Twain

3* Walton, a 6'0" G, had an offer from the Hogs (Walton was ranked as the #22 PG)

we offered him too late. Should have nailed that down when he was 9. ;D

I personally think Taylor is going to be better than Fred his senior year.  Also, not hog material due to size, but Kiko (sp?) is getting looked at by Harvard.

Fred Gulley was not interested.  Arkansas would have recruited him had he shown any interest at all.  Sorry guys, barking up the wrong tree here.

That would be pretty impressive, but I find it highly unlikely.  Gulley has been publicized since he was in 7th grade, unless you live in Northwest Arkansas and follow high school basketball, you probably haven't heard of Cochran.  Now Kiko is good.  I'm not sure if he or Cochran is better.

James Anderson would have followed James Dickey to UAPB.  Arkansas (Stan Heath) never really stood a chance.  Speaking of James Dickey I am still praying he somehow (rejoins the Arkansas staff if Rob Evans retires)

I know he has some relatives in school up here.

Kiko is a better point guard than Cochran. Cochran is a better shooting guard than Kiko. Cochran has an excellent jump shot. He also looks like he still has some growing to do. Cochran will be recruited more than kiko because of his size and shooting ability. If he grows to a legit 6'4" or more, he will be better than Fred. Fred is quicker and a better ball handler.

Cochran will never be as good as Gulley because he is too one dimensional. Gulley is not a player who could make a huge impact on the SEC level, but he can hurt people in so many ways on the HS level. He is too quick to pressure, and he could stick the 3 if you backed off of him. He is also a great defender.

Gulley was very good in the state tournament. He was the best all around player on that team. Good offensively and great defensively. He's smart and plays hard.

Good high school player. His dad did a great job of marketing him, mainly as Ronnie Brewer's cousin. Nice kid, good student. Doesn't have  a D1 body. Gets to the foul line alot, ALOT in high school. Going to struggle just like C. Fortson when the whistle isn't there to bailout over penetration. Jump shot is  broke. Very injury prone.
