Zachary quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr. announced Sunday afternoon that he's committed to LSU, giving the Tigers their first, and likely only, QB in a recruiting class current ranked No. 1 nationally.

Scott's father, Lindsey Sr., confirmed the news just before his son posted the commitment message on his Twitter account.

Scott is the 28th-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the 2016 class and a three-star prospect. He had narrowed his list to LSU, Harvard, Maryland and Tulane, his father said Friday.

BATON ROUGE – He was not LSU's first choice, but LSU will be the choice of Zachary quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr., who said on his Twitter account Sunday afternoon that he will sign a scholarship with the Tigers on national signing day Wednesday. He became LSU's 23rd commitment for the class, which is ranked No. 1 in the nation by the 247Sports recruiting website.

"After talking to my family, with plenty of prayer, I've decided to commit to LSU," Scott tweeted on Sunday after visiting LSU over the weekend.

The Tigers offered Scott (5-11, 205 pounds) of Zachary High in the Baton Rouge area a scholarship on January 19. In November LSU lost long term commitment Feleipe Franks, the No. 3 ranked pro style quarterback in the country by Rivals.com of Wakulla High in Crawfordville, Florida, to Florida and quarterback guru head coach Jim McElwain. LSU then jumped onto Dwayne Haskins Jr., the No. 5 drop back quarterback in the country out of Bullis High in Potomac, Maryland, who considered LSU briefly before committing to Ohio State.

Scott, who has a 3.8 grade point average at Zachary, also had scholarship offers from Air Force, Army, Colgate, Grambling, Harvard, Louisiana-Monroe, Maryland, Navy, New Mexico State, Rutgers, Southern, Syracuse, Tulane and Wake Forest, among others. He visited Maryland on January 22 and Rutgers on January 24.

LSU's class of 2016 remained No. 2 in the nation on Sunday behind No. 1 Ohio State, according to Rivals.com. 247Sports has LSU No. 1 and Ohio State No. 2. ESPN's team rankings also has LSU at No. 1 and Ohio State at No. 2.

LSU last had a No. 1 class in Rivals.com's rankings in 2003 under former head coach Nick Saban. Miles had the No. 2 class in Rivals.com in 2014 and in 2009 with Alabama No. 1 in both years. Miles' 2009 class was No. 1 and Alabama No. 2 in the 247Sports rankings.

One day after Oneonta linebacker Riley Cole decommitted from Alabama, his father David called into JOX FM's Opening Drive to clear the air.

The main points: the Cole family was most disappointed in the timing of the decision, said communication was the major issue and that Alabama head coach Nick Saban was "not the reason for this happening."

"The respect I have for Coach Saban and his family, I can't describe enough about it," David Cole said on JOX. "I really don't think he knew about what was trying to be presented to us."

Cole committed to Alabama last June and took his official visit to Alabama on the weekend of Jan. 15, supposedly furthering his relationship with new defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt.

But after Kirby Smart and Mel Tucker - Cole's primary recruiters - left for Georgia, communication started to drop. Last Friday - just five days before National Signing Day - the grayshirt talk came up with Cole.

"Communication was the biggest problem and when Riley asked them to give an answer, they wouldn't give him a straight answer," David Cole said. "We got the impression they were wanting to wait until after National Signing Day, see who they got, and then let Riley know if they wanted to grayshirt him.

"Finally, Riley was like, you know what, it's best for me to walk away, step back a little bit and see what other opportunities I have."

David Cole said Riley has a top three, but didn't want to say those schools. Oklahoma offered him Sunday night and he mentioned that other schools inquired, but most are full at this stage.

Four-star Fort Pierce Central (Fla.) offensive guard Stewart Reese committed to the Bulldogs over Syracuse in a ceremony at his high school. Reese also holds offers from Alabama, Auburn and others. The 6-foot-5, 340-pounder and one-time Florida State lean officially visited Mississippi State on Jan. 15-17. He is the 16th commitment for Dan Mullen in 2016.

We heard from Cole, the Oneonta High School linebacker, on Twitter on Sunday, and we heard from his dad David on WJOX on Monday morning. We have not heard from Nick Saban or Jeremy Pruitt because college coaches can't comment in any kind of detail about a prospect until a prospect becomes a signee.

David Cole said Riley plans to sign with another school Wednesday on National Signing Day. No doubt Saban will be asked about Cole at the Alabama coach's NSD press conference.

The story, according to the Coles:

Riley committed to Alabama last summer. His primary recruiters were Kirby Smart and Mel Tucker, neither of whom still works for Alabama. Smart is now the Georgia head coach, and Tucker's his defensive coordinator.

Alabama discussed with the Coles that Riley might redshirt his freshman season, but the idea of grayshirting - pushing his enrollment back from this summer until next January - was never discussed.

Until Friday, when David Cole said Pruitt, Alabama's new defensive coordinator, mentioned grayshirting as a possibility in a conversation with Riley. David Cole said it appeared Alabama wanted to wait until after Signing Day - until other linebacker prospects announced their school choices - to decide whether Riley should grayshirt.

As you might imagine, this potential change in plans, this late in the process, bothered the Coles. It bothered Riley so much that he told the world Sunday on Twitter that he had de-committed from Alabama. His dad, who called "The Opening Drive" on WJOX to tell the story, said his son will not sign with Alabama. He did not say which school Riley will attend or which schools are among his new top-three choices.

David Cole appeared to absolve Saban of any responsibility for this late change in plans - he said he had nothing but the utmost respect for the Alabama coach - but he also said, as we all know, Saban is the ultimate decision-maker for his program.

Did Saban sign off on the grayshirt possibility? Did Pruitt do it on his own authority? We don't know, and Alabama can't say until Wednesday at the earliest.
