Sad day in baseball. Oscar Taveras reportedly killed in a car accident. Such a tragic loss in what was a bright future.

Horrible news. He was my favorite of the young prospects on the team.

I was just about to post this. Thoughts and prayers to the young Man's family.

I was really looking forward to watching him progress and turn into a star. Man, that swing was a thing of beauty. 22 years old. Thoughts are with his family for sure.

It may just be because I follow the Cardinals more closely than any other team, but it seems like there are more player deaths in this organization than most. Only 3 that I can think of in the past 15 or so years, but that is still pretty high for active player deaths.

Just saw this on ESPN. RIP. Sad, sad news.

Oscars game tying homerun against the Giants. A lot more memorable now.

I'm shocked. Just speechless. Such a loss.

22 years old and his whole life ahead of him.

Awful news. Just had it come across my Espn app.he was a clubhouse favorite. Watched the cardinals now for 30 plus yrs and he was always smiling. Just looked like the kind of kid u wanted around, and what a swing he had. RIP Oscar.

tuskwound

I'm absolutely sick to my stomach. Kid was going to be a superstar.

Really sad;  his GF apparently died in the crash as well.  Two promising lives, snuffed out.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

I am not a STL fan but this is really a heartbreaking tragedy. So young.

I'm just numb. Two young lives snuffed out way too soon. This just doesn't seem real. I wish I could wake up tomorrow and this all be just a dream.

Me too. It's a strange feeling for someone I didn't know. I guess as fans, we've just invested so much into what was supposed to be the future of the organization. The excitement that surrounded him was something that hasn't been around a prospect in this organization in a long time. I was looking forward to watching him grow into a superstar. All the talk about when will Oscar take over was so exciting and interesting and now no more, but more importantly 2 young lives have been taken entirely too soon.

jrulz83

Terrible tragedy, he didn't even get the chance realize his potential. Sad, sad news.

I hope his family will be well provided for. There's no telling how many people in the DR he was helping out.

I saw a pic of his car on TMZ. It was destroyed. I can't imagine anyone having to see a picture of the people who were in the car. (apparently a photo of his body was circulating on Twitter).

Apparently it wrapped around a tree. They said there was another car at about this same time last year that did the exact same thing. Hit the same tree and killed them. It was a wet road and in a curve I think is what they said. That far was demolished.

Thought this was pretty cool. The turned on just the right field light at as a tribute.

Hate to see this news. Could have been prevented. Taveras was severely drunk during the crash. 5x over the legal limit.

I was afraid that was going to come out, it turns from tragedy to stupidity. Sad...

Yeah, I kinda figured that alcohol was involved.

Like John Mozeliak said, though, it doesn't change the fact that this is a tragedy.

No it doesn't change the fact that it is a tragedy, but it turns it into a tragedy that was preventable by one phone call, or by listening to his friend Carlos Martinez who tried to get him to stay where he was. It makes it more disappointing and sad to think of how easily preventable the loss of two young lives was.

Agreed. No matter if he was drunk out of his mind or completely sober, he is gone now. May he rest in peace.

Your initial statement was

it turns from tragedy to stupidity.

As if because of the stupid decision by Taveras to drink and drive, it was no longer a tragedy.

I simply wanted to echo what John Mozeliak said. Which is, regardless of the reckless actions taken by Taveras, this is still a terrible tragedy.

Hopefully, it can become a teachable moment.

Can it not be both tragic and stupid? Or does everything have to be a single narrative? Bernie Miklasz summed up the conflicted feelings better than anybody else has:

I agree with you. Both tragic and stupid. Anytime you get behind the wheel while intoxicated it's stupid. If something happens to you, it's tragic. Both fit this situation. It's a tragedy that could have been prevented.
