YLER, Texas – After setting the school record for single-season wins last week against Bacone College, the Lyon College football team added to its total on Saturday. The Lyon College football held Texas College to just three points in a 41-3 victory in the Scots' season finale for the 2017 season.
Lyon finished the year at 5-6 overall and 3-5 in the Central States Football League. The three conference victories are a new program record for the Scots. Saturday's victory also marked the first conference road win in program history.
GAME FLOW
Lyon College started quickly, scoring on its first two possessions of the game. Titus Nelson (FR/Zachary, La.) scored on a pair of three-yard runs to put the Scots on top, 14-0. The freshman continued his big day into the second quarter as he took another goal-to-go carry from two yards out to extend the Lyon College lead to 21-0.
After the Lyon College defense forced the Texas College offense into a three-and-out, the Scots went back to work on the offensive end. Cody Jones (SR/Russellville, Ark.) found Drew Sanger (FR/Buras, La.) open down the field for a 39-yard pass to put the Scots inside Texas College territory. Nelson then got the call on the next two plays on the ground as the freshman picked up runs of eight and five yards. With the Scots just outside the red zone, the Texas College defense clamped down and forced Lyon College to settle for a 43-yard field goal by Ignacio Gomez (FR/Wilmer, Texas) to put the Scots ahead, 24-0.
With the offense rolling, the Lyon College defense gave the Scots the ball back again quickly with another three-and-out. Josh Abel (FR/Jensen Beach, Fla.) began the next possession with a 14-yard run before picking up 30-yards through the air on a pass from Jones. Jones then found Jacquez Parker (FR/Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) for a 17-yard touchdown pass to push the score to 31-0 in favor of the Scots before halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, Nelson found his way into the end zone for his fourth rushing touchdown of the game from 11 yards out. Texas College finally broke the scoring column late in the game with a 32-yard field goal from Markese Denmon. Lyon College answered right back with a 44-yard field goal from Gomez to give the Scots a 38-point victory.
