The thing is, state schools are all producing a very similar product. Let's compare to sneakers as you suggest.

We can and do compare shoe companies. There are folks who like Nike. And there are folks who like rebok. And there are folks who prefer under armor.

All of those preferences are built into the over all company rating that we quantify as shoe price. Or maybe stock price/market Cap. There are metrics by which we can generalize all those specific individual desires.

Pretending that because one company makes a really popular shoe for dendrochronologists, we cannot generally judge shoe companies is ridiculous.

Similarly, we can point to plenty of metrics by which we know UNC is a more respect institution (except in dendrochronology) than the u of a.

Again, the point is whooshing right over your head. Who cares about stock price/market cap when choosing a shoe that fits YOUR foot. What footwear shopper benefits from your metric?

I stated this explicitly in that last post, and I'll reiterate here. Nobody from the very beginning, all the way through this entire thread has ever disagreed with you that a person CAN create such a ranking. If that's all you want to hear, then yes, you are a billion percent correct and everybody here agrees with you. Congratulations.

What is being argued is what does that ranking mean for the students choosing a college or even the hiring managers choosing former students? And that answer is zero just like your metric about stock prices isn't useful when determining which shoe will fit your foot or needs.
