JUCO Transfer Reed Has Freakish Skills

Bret Bielema has not yet seen JUCO transfer receiver Dominique Reed on the practice field at Arkansas but he likes what he's hearing from the team's strength and conditioning coach about Reed's athleticism.

"Coach (Ben) Herbert made the comment to me that we probably have on our hands one of the freakiest kids we've had. He can run and jump and do all the intangible things that don't involve running routes and catching footballs," Bielema recalled. "I think he broad jumped 11-4 and ran some times that would suggest sub 4.3 40's."

Unlike their head coach Reed's teammates have seen him on the practice field running routes and catching footballs. They say he's more than just a guy who looks impressive in agility drills.

I'm optimistic that he will hold onto the ball after the Bama secondary welcomes him to the SEC.
If as fast as advertised DR and BA will have to work on their timing...so he's not waiting for the ball.
Looking forward to Dominique opening up the field.

Thanks for the post Mike.  Let's keep our fingers crossed!
The first thing I heard today was that he grew up on a pig farm. That's quite a start in my book. And my last memory was watching him hang 70 on Nebraska. Just those two facts are enough (for me to like him). Then, I hear that he's out of the Hayden Fry-Bill Snyder-Barry Alvarez coaching tree. Oh, that's enough for me to like a lot. Then, I hear he's got a 27-year-old wife. Okay, we can stop. I like him.

Another JA would be great......I just hope this one catches the opening pass of the Sugar Bowl that would have been an easy breakaway TD.

I hope BA has put about 9 more yards on his deep ball so he can hit him in stride.

Good point. I find it interesting that BA said at one point after Spring that Coach Enos has instructed all the QBs to improve their arm strength and has given them a plan.

:)
Go Hogs!

woodrow hog call

He has plenty of arm for the deep ball, if, he can see it soon enough to let it fly before the receiver gets too deep. I really hope Enos can help BA with the timing of his passes, as much as anything else.

Ya I agree, Allen doesn't have bad arm strength, he can get it out there, just usually would throw it too short or too long. Enos will help with that.

You mean when Alabama's secondary gets cheap shots at him with no penalty.

Bigdavis

If he really runs a 4.35, has a 46" vertical and an 11'4" Broad jump. This kid is a super freak. Hopefully he's not the next Chris Baker.

If reed can just turn into an average receiver we should be all set. Most of his looks should be PA where he will have some breathing room v corners. In the slot u rotate out Cornelius and Jojo. I would like our receivers to be:
1) Hatcher
2) Reed
3) Cornelius
4)Jojo (just a hope given off the hype)
5) Duwop
6)Drew Morgan
7)Cody Hollister

I would really love to see 4 WR sets with Hatcher, Redd on outside and Jojo and Cornlius as the inside slots. Only on like 3 and longs tho. Any 3rd and medium or short and Henry needs to be out there

From film I've seen he catches the ball well in a crowd. Most DB's in those clips play him heads up, maybe to negate his acceleration. Behind the DB, a safety usually spies. Still catches the dang ball though. Looking forward to watching him.

Hoping we don't need him there. He has the tools to be a major part of our offense, I'm just hoping that he gets in sync with the offense and timing with BA down pat before conference play.

I've decided to go into this season with an open mind. Clean slate. I like the chip-on-thy shoulder attitude that the team has taken on & have warmed up to CBB. My biggest concern is BA. He needs to improve his timing, arm strength, leadership skills, etc. but most of all I don't want to see the "deer in the headlights" look followed by slumped shoulders on the sideline. That was his main problem IMO. Hell bells being a Purple Dog Alumni myself I hope he puts it all together but if not I hope the next guy up gets a fair shot. The team & fans deserve consistently average QB play at the least. I'm definitely feeling better about all things Razorback Football. That proverbial buzz is in the air up here in Fayetteville once again...anticipation, possibilities, hopes, dreams, bbq, beers, broads, etc! I look forward to it & I must admit it's been a few years since I had the intuition that we could be a force to be reckoned with...WPS!  :razorback: ::hornsdown:: ;)

In addition to his 11+ feet in the standing long jump, I think DR also holds the state schoolboy record in the triple jump at something approaching 50'.

I heard from a coach that in high school he jumped 6'8" in the high jump in the first meet he competed in the high jump.

Hog N Bama

I just want to see a deep ball caught by Reed for a TD against both Auburn AND Bama. :razorback:

AugustaHog

He's going to make an impact so long as he can get off the jams of some of the more handsy CBs from Bama and LSU.  If he can get behind the D, Safeties will have to respect that.  They will be forced to make a decision on whether to peek into the box or help over the top.  If they guess wrong, checkmate.

Yes. Two to play two, he redshirted at JC.

Reed is so fast Chuck Norris just sat down.

Seriously though, with his speed putting him in motion should resolve any issues he might have getting off the line.
Y'all don't straighten up and raise some hell OTR and Rev are goin to put a saddle on Darrel Royal's floating fulminatin head and ride you down!

razorhog52

I have high hopes for Reed but also want to temper my expectations. It usually takes an adjustment period for JUCO guys and he has no redshirt year. His frame and speed reminds me of Chris Baker. JUCO hyper like Sparky Hamilton. Hopefully he comes on quickly like Boo Williams.

HogShat

I've said it in a couple other threads so this is just a reminder. He is not just a threat downfield. I watched him play all thru HS. He made his living on WR screens. Uncanny ability to make the first guy miss. Also I think he did fairly well in the return game for Coffeyville. Hope he gets a shot there.

Let's keep him healthy and stretch the field.  At wide receiver the transition from JUCO to the SEC shouldn't be that difficult.  QB, OL, DL, LB, DB?  Sure, there's a lot to learn.

FIFY.

BA is a natural leader with the respect of his teammates. There is a reason why he was asked to come back as a counselor at the Manning Passing Academy this summer. Yup, that's right; they don't just ask anyone.  I'm not sure who you've been watching, but I've never noticed this "deer in the headlights", slumped shoulders look that you alluded to.  I'm not saying it never happened, but it was not the norm, and it certainly was not his "main problem".  Accuracy on the deep ball, moving quickly through his progressions, knowing when to run vs throwing it away- These are the things I see that need improvement, but I have no doubts about his leadership abilities or mental toughness.

This.  We've seen other SEC teams use first year Juco WR's with great success in the very recent past (Josh Reynolds and Duke Williams come to mind).  And because of the way our schedule sets up, he and BA will have plenty of game time experience to work on their timing before we get into the meat of our schedule.

Last year, I saw an offense that was really just missing one very important piece- a WR who could make BA (or whoever is playing QB) look good, even when the pass was not thrown well.  IF Reed can be that guy, the one who can bale us out of a busted play or make those quick adjustments while the ball is in the air, then we could be SCARY good on the offensive side of the ball this year.  Here's hoping he lives up to the hype!  WPS
