Akron, OH. – The University of Akron came off a week of short rest following an upside 52-0 loss against top rank Penn State on last weekend, but was still able to come out strong in a 52-3 win over the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions first-ever trip to Akron, Ohio and UAPB's first matchup against a MAC opponent in the history of the program on Saturday evening.

The Golden Lions (0-2) started out slow on the first drive, but the Zips (1-1) set the tone early by driving down the field on six plays, 56 yards to the house for a quick 7-0 lead in front of 17,464 fans at Infocision Stadium.

The Golden Lions defense made some big stops in the 1st half, but the deep Zips offense was able to battle back each time the UAPB defenders stole back a bit of momentum at every turn.

Akron opened the game on a 24-0 run, with Akron running back Warren Ball (20 carries, 146 yards, three touchdowns) and QB Thomas Woodson (15-of-21, 166 yards, 1 TD).

After being down by 24 points, UAPB didn't back down, senior quarterback Brandon Duncan drove down the field on 12 plays, 67 yards for All Conference kicker, Jamie Gillan 25 yards field goal to give UAPB its first score of the game (24-3).

Despite the offense not being able to get into a groove, the Golden Lions defense had several strong performers on Saturday.  Senior linebacker Danarius Dooley led UAPB in tackles with nine stops (four solo), sophomore outside linebacker Don Taggart followed with eight tackles and 0.5 TFL and Shufon Alcorn with four tackles and one pass breakup.

On the offense side of the ball, senior Brandon Duncan led the Golden Lions passing, going (12-of-23, 105 yards and two interceptions).

The road doesn't get any easier for the Golden Lions with next week's trip to face their second consecutive FBS team, Arkansas St. Redwolves on Sept. 16, at 6 p.m. in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
