Some of those SEC players you need to know for the 2018 NFL draft

QuoteLSU pass-rusher Arden Key. The 6-foot-6, 238-pound junior finished second in the SEC last season with 12 sacks and was also among the league leaders in tackles for loss (14.5). He missed the entire spring due to personal reasons [it's his business]. Calvin Ridley and Christian Kirk become draft eligible. SEC's other "elite" player in next year's draft class is Minkah Fitzpatrick, the Alabama defensive back who led the conference with six interceptions and returned two for touchdowns. One of Fitzpatrick's best assets is his versatility. He can play cornerback, safety, nickel --

The best of the rest

We've only scratched the surface on next year's SEC draft class. Sure, the four players above are likely first-round picks, but they won't be alone.

Players like Lorenzo Carter, Davin Bellamy, Marquis Haynes, Braden Smith and Armani "Ronnie" Watts...

Alabama churns out first- and second-round picks every year, and next year will be no different. In addition to Ridley and Fitzpatrick, you could see Da'Ron Payne, Shaun Dion Hamilton, Ronnie Harrison and maybe even Da'Shawn Hand taken early in the draft. Offensive linemen Bradley Bozeman and Ross Pierschbacher will also be solid picks whenever they go off the board.

Take this to the bank if you want -- there's going to be an LSU defensive back taken high. It happens every year. The best bets next year, if they leave early, are junior cornerbacks Donte Jackson and Kevin Toliver II.

you could see Georgia's Nick Chubb or LSU's Derrius Guice get taken in the first round and maybe even become part of that conversation above. Alabama junior Bo Scarbrough also has first-round talent but has to find a way to stay healthy.

There are a handful of other backs -- Damien Harris, Kamryn Pettway, Sony Michel, Rawleigh Williams III and Ralph Webb --

Other players to keep an eye on from the SEC include and are limited to Antonio Callaway, Martez Ivey, Martinas Rankin, Frank Ragnow, Trenton Thompson, Cece Jefferson, Jordan Jones, Duke Dawson, Dominick Sanders and yes, Daniel Carlson.

NFL mock draft 2018: Predicting the top players in the 2018 NFL Draft (11/5/2017)

Quote6. Miami Dolphins Arden Key, LSU DE:While the Dolphins would love to get their hands on one of the top quarterbacks, they take the most talented defensive player in the class in Key, who had 12 sacks last season.

8. Washington Redskins: Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alabama S: Fitzpatrick will be compared to Florida State safety Derwin James. Right now, Fitzpatrick is having the better season, and thus comes off the board first.

10. Chicago Bears: Christian Kirk, Texas A&M WR: Kirk would be a perfect fit for the Bears, especially given their lack of offensive weapons. He is the best wide receiver in this draft class [maybe ever].

13. Baltimore Ravens: Calvin Ridley: While Joe Flacco hasn't been great this year, he also needs some weapons. Ridley would also continue a trend of drafting Alabama players in the first round for the Ravens.

16. Cincinnati Bengals Roquan Smith, Georgia LB: Linebacker has been any area of concern with the Bengals. So they draft the best one in the class, as Smith has turned Georgia into one of the best defensive players in [our nation].

26. New Orleans Saints: Rashaan Evans, LB Alabama

28. Seattle Seahawks: Derrius Guice, LSU RB

Question of the Day: Will any of LSU's star juniors return next season?

QuoteDon't hold your breath to see Arden Key or Derrius Guice suit up in an LSU uniform next season. Both are almost certainly gone, with Guice especially unlikely to return. Ever since last season the running back has made it clear that his goal was to declare for the NFL draft following his junior season.

Key figures to be in the same boat, but that is based largely on presumption. Reporters haven't talked to Key since his leave of absence in the spring, so there's no telling what he's thinking.

NFL executive: LSU's Arden Key is the 'most polarizing' player in the 2018 draft

QuoteLSU's Arden Key had the potential to become a household name coming into the 2017 season, but injuries and other distractions severely limited his production.

After a tremendous sophomore campaign, Key registered just 4 sacks as a junior and has some scouts wondering where he could fall in the draft.

According to one anonymous NFL executive, Key is the most polarizing player in the class for their team.

"We had guys who had huge grades on him coming into the season and they plummeted during the season. We're still trying to sort him out," the executive told NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah.

11 SEC players land in first round of 2018 NFL mock draft

Quote... according to NFL.com's Charley Casserly 2018 NFL mock draft.

Casserly predicts 11 players from the SEC will hear their names called in the first round of April's NFL draft.

It's possible this is an optimistic projection for the SEC, mostly because of the three LSU players in contention. The Tigers were shut out of Mel Kiper Jr.'s initial draft projection after the season ended...

Minkah Fitzpatrick and Roquan Smith are likely to be top 10 selections, while Calvin Ridley, Rashaan Evans and Da'Ron Payne could knock on the door for that honor.

All of these athletes will get the chance to impress scouts and teams one more time at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis from Feb. 27-March 5. The NFL draft will be held in Arlington, Texas, on April 26-28.

Alabama again ties school, SEC records on 1st night of NFL draft

QuoteFour Crimson Tide players were taken in the first round of the NFL draft Thursday night, the fourth time since 2011 and the second straight year that Alabama has had four players selected during the first round of the draft.

Like last year, there weren't any Tide players chosen in the top-10.

Georgia, which had three players picked in the first round, was the only other school with more than two players drafted in the first round.

The wait is finally over for Georgia's Nick Chubb, Lorenzo Carter

QuoteGeorgia had another player go off the board Friday night later than expected. Outside linebacker Lorenzo Carter of Norcross was selected by the New York Giants early in the third round with the 66th pick overall.

Carter and Chubb give the Bulldogs five players drafted so far in 2018 and 320 in Georgia history. Linebacker Roquan Smith (No. 8 overall), offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn (23) and Michel (31) became the first trio in Bulldogs history to be picked in the first round.

Chubb rushed for 4,769 yards and 44 touchdowns in four seasons at UGA, finishing as the second-leading rusher in SEC history behind former Bulldogs back Herschel Walker. But he likely slipped to the second round because many in the NFL questioned whether he ever completely regained his speed and mobility after a serious knee injury in 2015.

A lot of folks seemed surprised that former @AlabamaFTBL standout Tony Brown wasn't selected in the 2018 @NFL Draft, including him.

QuoteAt least one undrafted rookie has made the Chargers' 53-player regular-season roster coming out of training camp for 21 consecutive seasons. That's the longest current streak in the NFL.

Former Alabama cornerback Tony Brown could be the player to keep it going.

Despite running a 4.35-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, Brown did not get picked in this year's draft.

"It was extremely shocking," Brown said.

After the draft, Brown signed with Los Angeles, a team that had a connection to the cornerback. Chargers coach Anthony Lynn played football at Texas Tech with Brown's father.

"You have to make a decision on what team puts you in the best situation, and that's the position I'm in right now," Brown told the Chargers' official web site. "There were a lot of teams that wanted to sign me, but I felt this was the best place.

"I talked to coach Lynn. I met him when I was a child, but I didn't know a lot about him. But when I talked to him, he let me know the relationship and reminded me of it. He let me know the opportunity I had to make the team here. I liked what he was saying."

At Los Angeles' rookie minicamp, Lynn liked what he saw of the grownup Brown.

"It's hard to tell after one practice," Lynn said, "but I was just watching him; I studied him a little bit out there at corner. He can play some free safety as well. I thought he did fine. He's picking up the system. He's still learning. Got a lot going on, but he's a very gifted young man. Very talented and his skillset's off the charts."

Chargers signed 21 undrafted rookies, including cornerbacks B.J. Clay of Georgia State, Marcus Edmond of Clemson and Brandon Facyson of Virginia Tech.

"There are 325 million people in this country," Lynn said. "A lot of people are going to go undrafted, so that really doesn't matter. All that matters is that you're here. You're going to get good coaching. You're going to get an opportunity."
