Gus Malzahn calls nearly 50 juniors on National Signing Day

QuoteMalzahn was getting a head start on recruiting juniors, telling them that they, too, could be at the center of attention in one short calendar year.

"We've been thinking about the juniors for a long period of time," Malzahn said. "Every year it seems like it gets earlier and earlier."

Auburn has offered scholarships to 114 players in the 2017 recruiting class, according to 247Sports. The Tigers have secured three commitments. Five-star Calvin Ashley, an offensive tackle, leads the group. Recruiting will pick up in the spring, particularly when spring practices end during the second week of April.

"I appreciate our staff through the transition," Malzahn said. "We lost three of our coaches, and they did a wonderful job. They are a very hardworking and loyal staff."

An early look at Auburn's recruiting needs for National Signing Day in 2017
http://bit.ly/1nKKY0S

QuoteFollowing the 2016 season, Auburn will lose 16 scholarship seniors, with a few juniors, including Carl Lawson, also likely to considering leaving early.

Three players are already committed to Auburn's 2017 recruiting class.

QUARTERBACK

Completing eligibility after 2016 season: Jeremy Johnson
Eligibility remaining after 2016: John Franklin III, Sean White, Tyler Queen, Woody Barrett
What Auburn needs in 2017: Assuming John Franklin III does not perform to a level warranting an early departure for the NFL, Auburn will have four scholarship quarterbacks on the roster heading into the 2017 season...

RUNNING BACK

Completing eligibility after 2016 season: Jovon Robinson
Eligibility remaining after 2016: Roc Thomas, Kerryon Johnson, Malik Miller
What Auburn needs in 2017: Auburn won't have a between-the-tackles, every-down back...

Recapping Auburn's national signing day http://es.pn/1PKAxp9

QuoteBut if there's one spot where the Tigers could have added another body, it was at linebacker, where they lost all three starters from a season ago. Yet the coaches signed just one linebacker, Tre Threat. And while Threat is ranked in the ESPN 300 and has the versatility to play either inside or outside, there's no depth.

Auburn's top quarterback targets in 2017 class http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/index.ssf/2016/02/auburns_top_quarterback_target_1.html ...

QuoteLowell Narcisse (6-foot-3, 200 pounds | St. James, La.)

The four-star prospect was committed to Auburn from July 2015 to January 2016. He opened up his recruitment because he felt he "rushed and made a premature decision." Narcisse remains Auburn's No. 1 priority at the quarterback position, though Auburn has had difficulty recruiting players out of Louisiana.

Jake Bentley (6-foot-4, 215 pounds | Opelika, Ala.)

Bentley was targeted by Auburn early in the process. His father, Bobby Bentley, served as an offensive analyst at Auburn for two year before being hired by Will Muschamp at South Carolina

These are the linebacker targets #Auburn is looking at for 2017: http://ow.ly/Y8nSX

QuoteMarkail Benton (6-foot-2, 227 pounds | Phenix City, Ala.)

Benton is right in Auburn's back yard and he is a frequent visitor to the Plains, which obviously bodes well for the Tigers. His recently-released top 10 schools are Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and South Carolina.

Benton's former teammate, cornerback John Broussard, signed with Auburn and enrolled last month. He has expressed interest in re-joining Broussard at the next level, but Alabama could be a threat. Benton is the No. 4 outside linebacker prospect in the 247Sports Composite.

Dylan Moses (6-foot-2, 220 pounds | Bradenton, Fla.)

The Baton Rouge native is a consensus five-star prospect and is the No. 1 overall player in the 247Sports Composite for the 2017 cycle...

The No. 1 prospect in the state of Alabama doesn't see himself playing college football in the Yellowhammer State.

Tank Jenkins, a 2018 four-star offensive tackle from Park Crossing High School (Montgomery, Ala.), told SEC Country that he doesn't want to be one of those in-state athletes that automatically go to either Alabama or Auburn.

Quote"I'm not trying to be that type of person that people say 'everybody from Alabama goes to Alabama or Auburn,"' Jenkins said. "I'm not trying to be that type of person to just go to Alabama or Auburn."

The 6-foot-4, 315-pounder believes that leaving the state would be "best for his life" so he could find a place that fits him best and not just a school that other people want him to attend.

"Alabama and Auburn are good schools, and I have a great time when I go down there, but I want to take my talent and take it far away from Alabama and get out of Alabama," he said. "I think that would be best for my life."

Jenkins notes that Bama and Auburn are his leaders at this time.

Four-star athlete Jamyest Williams has heard little from Auburn since defensive brain trust Will Muschamp and Travaris Robinson took off for South Carolina, hoping to establish more contact

Quote"I just have to see where I stand with them because I haven't heard much from them," said Williams, the No. 5 athlete in 2017. "Coach (Gus) Malzahn had followed me on Twitter, but I haven't had much contact with them. We'll see how much interest they have in me."

He unofficially visited The Plains on multiple occasions, with his most recent visit coming in mid-November.

It would seem Muschamp and Robinson's absence has led to little communication between both parties.

Kevin Steele made contact with Williams during his tenure at LSU but has yet to reach out to the Lawrenceville, Ga., native since being introduced as Auburn's new defensive chief.

"When he was at LSU, I did," Williams said when asked if he has had contact with Steele. "But I haven't heard much from him now."

"It's a really big factor," Williams said of the new coaching staff. "Hopefully, in the next couple of weeks I'll hear from them."

Recruiting Big Board: Examining Auburn's top running back targets in 2017 http://sec.news/1QIKnDW

QuoteAuburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee is in search of running backs in 2017

SEC Country examined the top running back targets

Cordarrian Richardson, four-star running back, Memphis, Tenn.
Auburn is certainly in play for Richardson, the No. 5 running back in 2017. Assistant coach Tim Horton has led the charge

Adarius Lemons, four-star running back, Clearwater, Fla.
Lemons reportedly holds Auburn at No. 2 behind North Carolina. The four-star running back is rated No. 12 at his position in 2017.

Cam Akers, four-star running back, Clinton, Miss.
Bama commit may be the most difficult prospect to sign among this group of running backs. Akers, rated as the No. 3 running back in the country, has been committed to the Crimson Tide since August. While he plans to visit Auburn unofficially, ...

Trey Sermon, four-star running back, Marietta, Ga.
Auburn is among the early favorites for the four-star running back. Sermon unofficially visited the Plains less than two weeks ago. It was his first visit since the spring of last year. Sermon, rated as the No. 10 running back in the country...

Gus Malzahn treated himself with a new car. Probably doesn't hurt recruiting, either: http://ow.ly/Z4M0p

Quote"I've never had a sports car," Malzahn said. "I turned 50, you know, and figured it was time to go ahead and get one."

The car carries a retail price of $140,700. He took prized recruit Tray Bishop on a ride in the car in late February.

"When (Malzahn) pulled up, he came over to me and whispered in my ear, 'That's my new ride,'" Bishop told AL.com in February. "He was like, 'Before you leave I want to spin a few blocks with you.' Before the basketball game he came and got me and told me a little bit about the car and we drove."

Bishop wants to play quarterback and Malzahn's staff is offering him a chance to do so with the Tigers.

QuoteJoey Gatewood turned 16 on Sunday and won't enroll in college until 2018, and yet, he is quickly becoming one of Auburn's most-hyped commitments.

6-foot-4, 226-pound quarterback at Bartram Trail in Jacksonville has garnered comparisons to Cam Newton by fans, the media and even Auburn's coaches.

Did Auburn's coaches compare you to any quarterbacks?

JG: "Oh yeah, Cam Newton. Cam's my idol. I'm a huge fan. He's been my idol since like sixth grade. I had no clue who Auburn was until he got there... I didn't know much about college football. I only knew about Florida and that was really it. I didn't really focus on the school when he was there because I was young, but when I got the chance to go down there I was like, 'Cam went to school here, that's pretty cool.'"

What did Malzahn say to you?

JG: "When I first walked into Malzahn's office we sat down and we talked with my mom and all. I remember he was like, 'You're the closest thing I've seen to Cam as a recruit since he was here. You saw how he Cam excelled in this offense.' I really think I can excel in the offense too. I have the same three goals as he did when he came: Win the Heisman, win a national championship and become a first-round draft pick at No. 1."

QuoteYou've probably seen the story by now, the one about Gus Malzahn comparing a 16-year-old Auburn quarterback commit for 2018 to Cam Newton.

Malzahn didn't make that comparison in public. According to the young man, Joey Gatewood, Malzahn made that comparison to Gatewood himself. And his mom.

Gatewood described the conversation this way.

"When I first walked into Malzahn's office we sat down and we talked with my mom and all. I remember he was like, 'You're the closest thing I've seen to Cam as a recruit since he was here. You saw how he excelled in this offense.' "

QuoteMarlon Character Jr. hoped to enroll at Auburn this week, but still has some work to do academically.

According to his father, the safety at Grady High School in Atlanta needs to lift his grade in an online class that end Friday. He is also retaking the ACT July 6. With the necessary marks, either will get him to Auburn July 31.

"He's been trying to infuse studying for the test and taking the online with staying in shape and working out and training," Marlon Character Sr. told AL.com Tuesday night. Auburn plans to add 1 quarterback to 2017 recruiting class

Quote"As a general rule, we always like to sign just one (quarterback) if we can," Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee told AL.com this summer in Brentwood, Tennessee. "We signed one in the 2016 class, we plan to sign one in the 2017 and 2018 class, but that can always change."

So far, Auburn has yet to find that prospect.

Tigers currently do not have a quarterback committed to the 2017 class, and the team recently missed out on ex-Baylor commit Kellen Mond, who chose A&M instead.

At one point, four-star quarterback Lowell Narcisse was in line to be that guy in the 2017 class, but after a nearly-six-month commitment to Auburn, the Saint James, Louisiana, prospect decommitted in January. This summer, Narcisse verbally committed to LSU —

Another potential option is the transfer market, where players such as Baylor's Jarrett Stidham, who recently announced his decision to leave the program before his sophomore season, could be available. Stidham was the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the 2015 class and held an offer from Auburn before choosing Baylor.

"You don't want to lock yourself in, because you never know what happens from guys transferring out, to injuries, to guys leaving early for the draft," Lashlee said. "In 2013 we brought in two guys and 2015 we brought in two guys. In one case they both stayed at quarterback, in another case on [sic] guy ended up moving to receiver. If things go the way they should, we'll probably sign one guy. That's ideal."
