Andy Katz on the Wooden Award

QuoteIn previous years, putting together a top 50 for the preseason Wooden Award has been a chore. There have been so many worthy candidates, even with the odd stipulation that you can't put a freshman or junior college transfer on the preseason list. But coming up with 50 was a bit more difficult this season. There isn't as much separation going into the season as we've seen in years past. That means the player of the year race is as wide open as I can remember the past 20 years. And that is good for the game because nearly all of them could emerge from a list of 50 and become a first-team all-American.

By reclassifying from 2014 to 2013 Andrew Wiggins is the new No. 1 recruit in the 2013 class

QuoteFor months there has been speculation that Wiggins, a 6-8, 200-pound small forward at Huntington (W.V.) Prep and originally from Canada, would move up to the 2013 class. On Thursday that speculation became a reality.

Huntington Prep head coach Rob Fulford has maintained that another year of high school basketball is unnecessary for the exceptionally talented prospect.

Now the No. 1 ranked prospect in the 2013 class, Wiggins has been consistently recruited by Kentucky and Florida State.

Earlier this week he announced that he is not strictly down to those two schools and would welcome being recruited by other schools. Already this week he has been visited by North Carolina head coach Roy Williams and assistants from Kansas and Ohio State.

Goodwin gets tough criticism from Calipari

QuoteAn open court stretched ahead of Archie Goodwin last night, with Julius Mays streaking ahead of him towards the basket.  Goodwin went up for the dunk and brought the house down at last night's Blue-White game. Although it was an explosive play, it was one that infuriated Coach John Calipari.

"He passed up Julius Mays," Calipari said. "That's unacceptable here and I let him know that. I wasn't real happy. After the game I said, 'You just took 22 shots, more than anybody on the team. You understand, you don't ever pass anyone up if you're going to get shots. The reason is because I'm making people throw it to you when you're ahead, so you better throw it to them when they're ahead.' He understood. It's not fun when you're being told in an aggressive way but we don't have time here. This isn't for funsies."

"He (Calipari) always tells us how back at our old schools or AAU teams, we were always the main option and we were only playing for ourselves," Goodwin said. "But now that we're here with a lot of guys that can play just as good as us, we're going to have to share the ball more. That's not something that I'm dwelling on or that's going to affect my game because I know that that's going to make me a better player and it's going to make every game easy for me as well as others."

Asked if he has gotten used to Calipari's occasional verbal aggression, Goodwin just smiled and said he was.

"Coach Cal's been doing that a lot lately," he said...

Senior transfer Julius Mays had led all scorers in first half of UK's scrimmage before 12,000 fans on Wednesday.

In the second half, when Mays switched to Goodwin's team, he went scoreless.

Goodwin, albeit wild sometimes, electrified the crowd with his speed and crossover moves en route to a team-high 22 points; Kentucky whoops Rollie Massimino's team in exhibition. It was Massimino's first trip to Rupp since winning the national championship in 1985 over Georgetown Hoyas.

QuoteMixing and matching: Harrow and Goodwin thrive at point in exhibition win

Goodwin and Harrow combined for 37 points and 10 assists, performances that led Calipari to believe UK is a little further along than he expected.

"I will tell you that we were better than I thought we'd be," Calipari said.

"I would just say it's a matter of me continuing to improve myself playing the two guard and the point-guard position, looking for my teammates because I know looking for them will make my game a lot easier because they will have more focus on them and then it will make me easier for me to find different angles to drive and shoot," Goodwin said.

After lofting up 22 shots in the Blue-White Scrimmage, Calipari was pleased with Goodwin's efficiency Thursday, but his five first-half turnovers were a result of him playing too fast and "out of control."

"You can play fast but don't be in a hurry," Coach Cal said. "When he plays fast, he hurries, and there's stuff he's learning. I'm all over him."

Goodwin calmed down and posted a turnover-free second half. The freshman showed signs of his developing vision with two sweet passes to Noel in the second half that led to back-to-back dunks. The 6-foot-4 guard finished with five assists on the night.

"He's a good player," Calipari said

Reclassification is starting to become a trend. Instead of "toiling in high school", talented juniors are becoming seniors and where they can serve their one-and-done college season, one year earlier

QuoteAdam Zagoria reports on the reclassification of Dakari Johnson.

Dakari Johnson, one of the best high school big men in America regardless of class, has reclassified to 2013 from 2014.

The 6-foot-10 Johnson is one of several high-profile players to move from 2014 to 2013, [including] 6-8 Huntington (W.V.) Prep small forward Andrew Wiggins, who remains uncommitted...

Syracuse, Kentucky and Georgetown have been involved with Johnson dating to his time at Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick High School. Johnson's mother, Makini Campbell, told SNY.tv this summer that Kansas, Florida, Louisville, Ohio State and Stanford were also involved.

Johnson sat out last season at Montverde (Fla.) Academy after transferring from St. Patrick, where he played alongside Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

Harrison twins give a verbal to Kentucky over Maryland and SMU.

The Harrison twins have chosen not to sign a National Letter of Intent with Kentucky during the early signing period which starts today.

Most likely the twins are waiting to see what the roster situation will be given early indications that some UK regulars do not appear NBA-ready. The also mentioned protection against a coaching change. Players of their caliber do not benefit from signing the LOI and giving up their power except perhaps for ending the recruiting contacts from other schools. Former UK PG Brandon Knight never signed an LOI, apparently waiting to see whether Eric Bledsoe would enter the NBA draft.

[Apparently a man of his word, Mr. Harrison intervened.]

Kasey Hill is expected to sign during the early period with Florida.

Super sophomore Karl Towns will commit Dec. 4 and could consider moving to 2013 or 2014 recruiting class

QuoteChristine Denham, senior account executive with Coyne Public Relations in New York, notified media members Wednesday that Towns — "arguably the nation's best sophomore in high school basketball and a University of Kentucky recruit" —  would make his verbal commitment live on regional cable network MSG Varsity. The MSG Varsity special will be broadcast from the high school, will air on Optimum TV channel 14 and will be streamed live on www.MSGVarsity.com.

Towns attended Big Blue Madness at the same time the Harrisons, Willis, Young and Lee were on campus. He also visited Duke and Michigan State this fall.

SEC Basketball Players of the Week

Alabama's Trevor Releford, a 6-foot, 195-pound sophomore guard from Kansas City, Mo., was named SEC Player of the Week after scoring averaging 18.0 points, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals in leading the Crimson Tide to the 2K Sports Classic championship with wins over Oregon State and Villanova. Releford was selected as the Most Outstanding Player of the event. In the semifinals against Oregon State, he connected on 6-of-10 field goals and recorded 14 points and five assists without a turnover, to lift the Crimson Tide to a 65-62 victory. In the championship game against Villanova, Releford, making his first start of the season, went for a career-high 25 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor and an impressive 5-of-5 from three-point range in the 77-55 victory over the Wildcats.

Kentucky's Alex Poythress, a 6-foot-7, 239-pound freshman forward from Clarksville, Tenn., was named SEC Freshman of the Week after scoring 21.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in games against 9th-ranked Duke and to Lafayette. Poythress had 20 points and added a team-high eight rebounds in a loss to No. 9 Duke. He then topped that performance with a 9-10 night from the field for a career-high 22 points. He became the first freshman since Brandon Knight in Feb. 2011 to have consecutive 20-point efforts.

G | 6-4 | FRESH | Oklahoma State
The consummate winner and intangibles guy -- and it didn't take him long to show what he's all about. Smart isn't a natural point guard, but Travis Ford moved him there out of necessity. He's thrived. Through four games, he's averaging 14.8 points, eight boards, five assists, three steals and 1.5 blocks per game. Against N.C. State, he went for 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out seven assists, had four steals and four blocks. Oh yeah, the Cowboys blew out the Wolfpack. Smart is the real deal.

Elite prospect Karl Towns picks Kentucky, reclassifies to 2014

UK fell out of the top 25 on Monday for the first time since John Calipari took over in Lexington. The Wildcats' struggles certainly aren't affecting their recruiting, though.

Karl Towns, formerly the top-ranked sophomore in the country, announced for Kentucky on Tuesday.

"Kentucky is such a great school," Towns told MSG Varsity. "I felt like Kentucky was just the right school at the end of the day."

Towns, a 6-foot-11 power forward from St. Joseph (N.J.), is an elite talent who has been recruited by some of our nation's best for a couple of years. Kentucky has always seemed like the favorite, and Calipari coaching Towns on the Dominican Republic national team didn't hurt. Florida was heavily in the mix for awhile, while Duke was also a frontrunner for some time. Seton Hall, Rutgers, Michigan State and North Carolina made the final seven.

"It was a big battle between Duke and Kentucky," Towns' mother, Jackie, told MSG Varsity.

"It was just such a relieving process," Towns added. "So much stress and so much nervousness was building up over these days."

Towns has the ability to be a matchup nightmare against nearly any opponent.

Goodman: Most of them can't even recall a year like this, where there is no clear-cut No. 1 draft pick and the overall crop of players is vastly underwhelming. Maybe back in 2006 when import Andrea Bargnani was selected first overall and Tyrus Thomas and Shelden Williams were both somehow taken in the top five. The NBA general managers who dealt away their first-round picks for June 27th's NBA Draft rejoice, while the ones who could end up picking at the top of the lottery are already frustrated and left scratching their heads in disbelief.

"I'd trade the pick for sure," one NBA GM said. "No one wants to pick first this year -- and no one can live up to the No. 1 billing."

QuoteCBSSports.com polled 35 NBA types, guys who have been out running from tourney to tourney over the first month of the season, on who they would select if picking first. Here's the tally:

Cody Zeller (Indiana): 31 percent
Nerlens Noel (Kentucky): 23 percent

"No one excites me this year," one NBA guy said.

Zeller: having short arms hurts him in the eyes of many NBA folks as it did with his brother.

"He'll never be a great NBA player," one NBA scouting director said.

Noel: no one's quite sure whether he's 6-foot-9 or 6-foot-11 because of his flattop.

SEC Men's Basketball Players Of The Week

Vanderbilt's Kyle Fuller, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound junior guard from Moreno Valley, Calif., was named SEC Player of the Week after scoring 25 points and dishing out five assists to go with four rebounds and three steals in a win at Xavier. The junior guard set a new career high in scoring with 25 points in a 66-64 overtime win at Xavier on December 6 at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati. Twelve of Fuller's points came in the overtime period, accounting for all of the Commodores' scoring in overtime. His three steals also set a new career high, as were his eight field goals and seven free throws made. Fuller's 25-point effort was Vanderbilt's third 25+-point individual game of the season.

Vanderbilt's Kevin Bright, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound freshman guard from Mannheim, Germany, was named SEC Freshman of the Week after registering 11 points and 10 rebounds in a win at Xavier. Bright notched his second consecutive double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in a 66-64 overtime win over Xavier on December 6.  Bright is the first Commodore to tally consecutive double-doubles since Festus Ezeli (at Alabama, 1/19/2012; vs. Miss. State, 1/22/2012), and he is the first freshman to have consecutive double-doubles since A.J. Ogilvy in 2007.

Fuller was a Scout *** out of California, not ranked nationally.

Bright was a Scout *** out of Germany. They do not rank the Rhineland.

Archie Goodwin Drops Out of CBS Freshman Top 5

Archie Goodwin was ranked #3 in the CBS Freshman Player of the Year race but has dropped out of the top 5 in this week's updated rankings.

There was plenty of shuffling in the rankings this week. With McLemore and Stauskas making their debuts, two players had to drop out: Xavier's Semaj Christon and Kentucky's Archie Goodwin. They were also two of the three players last cut.

Quantel Denson was out before he ever arrived on Mississippi State's campus.

Men's basketball coach Rick Ray announced Tuesday that Denson, a junior college prospect who signed with MSU in November, has been released from his scholarship.

The reason, according to a school release, was a "failure to adhere to rules and regulations set prior to his signing back in November."

In a statement, Ray added, "We had a zero tolerance policy with Quantel, and he failed to live up to the obligation we had outlined for him."

While playing for Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, Denson was arrested in April of 2011 after robbing his coach, according to the Hutchinson News.

He had made a verbal commitment to play to Missouri prior to the arrest.

Barbee has dismissed forward Sharief Adamu six games into his Tigers career.

After playing in Auburn's first six games and making two starts, Adamu was suspended before the Tigers' loss to DePaul for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

Originally dependent on Adamu to provide a presence at power forward after Kenny Gabriel's graduation, Auburn (2-5) will likely give more playing time to freshman Jordon Granger in the wake of Adamu's dismissal. Granger, a 6-8 forward, has not scored yet this season.

Off-the-court issues have forced Barbee to dismiss or let go of four players in 2012. Former point guard Varez Ward did not return after being investigated in an FBI point-shaving probe...

Alabama center Carl Engstrom out for the season following knee surgery

The Alabama basketball team's thin front court just got a little thinner.

Engstrom, a 7-foot-1 center from Ystad, Sweden, tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee early in the Crimson Tide's 58-56 loss on Dec. 1 at Cincinnati.

Bama guard Steele out for 4-6 weeks after sports hernia surgery

For the fourth consecutive season, Steele will not play a full season. The senior guard will miss the next four to six weeks because of sports hernia surgery that he had Thursday in Philadelphia.

"He's doing fine, but he's got an extended recovery," Grant said.

Grant is confident that Steele still will contribute to the team.

"If there's anybody that mentally is mature enough to handle that and deal with it, it's [Steele]," Grant said.

Auburn's Jordan Price ties an SEC record by making 11 straight 3-pointers

Price buried all three of his 3-pointers in Auburn's 81-62 win over Tennessee Tech to extend his streak to 11 straight 3-pointers over the course of three games, a mark that ties the SEC record set by Vanderbilt's Kevin Anglin in 1992.

After his third 3-pointer early in the first half, Price shugged and said something to Tennessee Tech coach Steve Payne that earned a technical foul and a spot on the bench for the Auburn freshman.

"Bad players do what he did. You are hot and you bark at the other teams' coaches?" Barbee said. "Good players know how good they are and they let their game do the talking."

One of the state of Georgia's top point guards will be on display when state champions collide at Miller Grove High School on Friday.

The Columbia boys play against Miller Grove at 7:30 p.m. Friday, preceded by the girls teams from both schools at 6 p.m. All four teams are defending state champions.

The best player on the court may be Columbia's Tahj Shamsid-Deen, the 5-foot-9 point guard who has signed with Auburn.

"If Tahj was 6 feet, we wouldn't be having a conversation about how good he is because everybody would know," said former Columbia coach Phil McCrary.

ince his freshman year, Shamsid-Deen has led Columbia to three consecutive Class AAA state championships. This year, he's averaging 21 points and 7 assists, including a 41-point effort against East Memphis a couple of weeks ago.

Shamsid-Deen's former coach had hoped that he would get a better look from UGA.

Boynton is in the midst of the worst shooting slump of his storied UF career. The 6-foot-2 former McDonald's All-American said he isn't pressing despite making just four 3-pointers in his last 32 attempts.

"I'm good," Boynton said following UF's 67-61 loss to Kansas State. "I'm not pressing. I know it's going to come. Coach (Billy Donovan) told me to take open looks and that's pretty much what I've been trying to do."

Boynton's lone 3-pointer tied the game at 41 with 13:21 remaining in the second half, but it didn't get him going. He followed it up with a missed 3-point attempt with 12:25 left and didn't take a 3-pointer the rest of the game.

Donovan has encouraged Boynton to shoot through his slump. Boynton shot a career best 40.7 percent from 3-point range last season. This season, Boynton is shooting just 27.9 percent (17-61) from beyond the arc.

Mechanically, Boynton said he's noticed on film that he's shooting on the way down instead of at his highest release point.

"Somehow, I've got to start shooting on the way up," Boynton said. "I just think I keep shooting on the way down, that's what it is."

For the 18 NBA franchises sending scouts or general managers to the KFC Yum! Center today, the game between fourth-ranked Louisville (11-1) and unranked Kentucky (8-3) isn't about a rivalry or coaching clash or office bragging rights.

"It's a fantastic matchup of NBA talent," said Chad Ford, ESPN's draft analyst.

QuoteThis game is packed with future pros. There will be six former McDonald's All Americans on the court — three on each side — not counting Wildcats freshman Nerlens Noel, the nation's top-ranked recruit a year ago who reclassified from the class of 2013 to 2012 too late for an invitation to the prestigious game.

More notably, eight players in today's game are ranked among Ford's top 80 prospects for the next NBA draft — No. 1 Noel, No. 7 Alex Poythress, No. 10 Archie Goodwin, No. 29 Willie Cauley-Stein and No. 77 Ryan Harrow for Kentucky; No. 39 Gorgui Dieng, No. 44 Wayne Blackshear and No. 74 Russ Smith for the Cardinals.

Those eight, along with the Cats' Kyle Wiltjer and Louisville's Peyton Siva, Chane Behanan and Montrezl Harrell, are all ranked among the top 25 draft-worthy players in their class by DraftExpress.com.

What to watch for in SEC basketball: The maturation of Kentucky PG Ryan Harrow

QuoteIt's being chronicled more than the life and times of the Kardashians as of late but the seemingly out of nowhere coming of age of Kentucky sophomore point guard Ryan Harrow is one of the most compelling stories as conference play is set to begin in the SEC.

The 6-foot-2, 170-pounder who is reminiscent of Milwaukee Bucks point guard Brandon Jennings in stature an hairstyle (sic) ...

QuoteHe sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules and was expected be the next in a long line of conveyor belt of lead guards to guide a John Calipari-coached team to success.

Harrow failed to score, playing just 10 minutes in Kentucky's 72-69 win against Maryland in the season opener. Then, he missed the next four games, a loss against Duke and wins against Lafayette, Morehead St. and LIU-Brooklyn for undisclosed personal reasons.

In the past four games, all Wildcats' wins, he's picked up the pace considerably going for 16.7 points and 4.2 assists per.

Kyle Tucker:
" Ryan Harrow's season assist-to-turnover ratio is 3.4 to 1. Among the nation's top 100 assist guys, only six have a better ratio"

"Harrow's average of 2.4 steals per game over the last five would rank 23rd nationally. His turnaround is really remarkable.

"Ryan Harrow shooting 49.2 percent from the field, 46.7 percent from 3-point range over the last five games."

Harrow's resurgence has directly affected the production of Archie Goodwin.
