SI's Mannix: NBA Draft Big Board (SEC)

1. Nerlens Noel: NBA exec: "he has a motor, and with bigs the hardest thing to find is a motor."

8. Alex Poythress: Consistency a problem, frequent target of Calipari: poor defense and intensity. Scouts love ability in paint but not seeing small forward skills.

10. Archie Goodwin: Scout: pound for pound he's as good as anybody in the NBA right now... When he gets stronger watch out.

South Carolina starting shooting guard LaShay Page declared academically ineligible for rest of season

QuoteFrank Martin had little time to recruit the type of program-changing players he covets. He was, however, able to land a newcomer experienced with winning — something the Gamecocks desperately needed.

From the moment shooting guard LaShay Page arrived to spend his fifth and final season of eligibility playing for USC, Martin praised Page for his leadership of a team with just one other senior. On the court, Page scored 11.7 points per game, second on the team, while playing nine of USC's first 12 contests. He struggled with shooting recently, but was unquestionably a valuable asset.

With one non-conference game remaining before Martin dives into his first SEC schedule, he will no longer have Page as a transition piece. USC announced Friday that Page was declared academically ineligible for the rest of the season.

The Gamecocks conclude non-conference play by hosting S.C. State today, and they also will not have their No. 3 scorer, wing player Michael Carrera, who averages 10.4 points and will miss his second straight game with a hip injury.

They likely will not have Bruce Ellington, their starting point guard for the past two seasons. Ellington has rejoined the basketball team now that his duties as a football wide receiver are finished for the season. But Martin said he plans to rest Ellington today and have him return to practice Sunday or Monday. USC opens SEC play Wednesday at Mississippi State. Ellington, USC's No. 2 scorer last season, has played in four games this season.

Now, the Gamecocks will not have Page, whose ineligibility leaves juniors Brenton Williams and Brian Richardson to take on larger roles.

Missouri gets pledge from juco Post player

The Tigers landed a verbal commitment from junior college center Keanau Post yesterday. Post is a 6-foot-11, 260-pound sophomore at Southwestern Illinois College.

Rivals.com doesn't give him a rating, and he's listed as a three-star prospect by Scout.com. But Harrington said he has improved his game significantly in the past year.

A native of Victoria, British Columbia, he enrolled at SWIC after attending Westwind Preparatory Academy in Phoenix.

Post had surgeries on both knees in August 2011...

The Tigers will lose seniors Laurence Bowers and Alex Oriakhi from the frontcourt after this season.

UK Soph Kyle Wiltjer was a top 25 prospect from his class and is now in Calipari's dog house after being picked on as the weak link by Vandy.

http://ukbasketball.bloginky.com/2013/01/11/vandy-cal-target-wiltjers-defense/

"Unacceptable."

That's the word Kentucky Coach John Calipari used to describe Kyle Wiltjer's defense — or lack thereof — in UK's 60-58 victory at Vanderbilt Thursday night.

Calipari said that Vandy scored 14 of its 24 first-half points against Wiltjer.

Vandy players Rod Odom, Shelby Moats and Kedren Johnson exchanged self-conscious smiles when asked if Wiltjer was targeted.

After a pause, Moats said that Vandy talked in several timeout huddles about trying to get points from the player guarded by Wiltjer.

When asked how often Vandy targeted an opponent in such a way, Johnson said, "Not every game. We just felt we had an advantage."

Said Johnson of Wiltjer, "He's not too quick sideways."

UK Fr. Alex Poythress, a top 10 prospect in the '12 class is in Calipari's doghouse.

http://ukbasketball.bloginky.com/2013/01/11/charging-calls-complicate-homecoming-for-poythress/

Poythress, who grew up in Cooksville, Tenn., fouled out of UK's 60-58 victory at Vanderbilt.

UK Coach John Calipari noted a lack of aggressiveness at times. Vandy grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and won the boards 42-37.

"You can't let it happen," Calipari said of gettable rebounds that eluded Poythress. "It's unacceptable."

Calipari suggested Poythress adopt an attitude of "I have to make it a point: I'm not getting outworked."

SEC Men's Basketball Players of the Week

A&M's Elston Turner, a 6-foot-5, 212-pound senior guard from Sacramento, Calif., was named SEC Player of the Week after averaging 27.5 points on 64.5 percent shooting to go with seven rebounds and three assists in wins over Arkansas and at Kentucky. He made an incredible 14-of-19 shots in the win at Kentucky, including 6-of-10 from beyond 3-point range, to become the first Aggie to reach the 40-point plateau since Jan. 5, 1985. Additionally, Turner became just the third opponent to score 40 or more points against the Wildcats at Rupp Arena. Earlier in the week, Turner tallied 15 points and a career-best eight rebounds in a win over Arkansas, Texas A&M's first-ever SEC win.

Mississippi State's Craig Sword, a 6-foot-3, 189-pound freshman guard from Montgomery, Ala., was named SEC Freshman of the Week after averaging 17 points, 3.5 rebounds and two steals in wins over South Carolina and at Georgia.

Most likely Kentucky. He is from the Dominican Republic and plays on their national team and attends school in New Jersey. His name is Karl Towns Jr. Coach Calipari is coaching the Dominican National Team.. wonder if he spotted the kid so early on that he set his sites on that team so he could get a leg up in recruiting- not that he needs it.

Didn't Qualls have a quadruple double? Or was it a triple double and a few blocks away from a quadruple?

Blackman point guard picks Vanderbilt

6-foot-4 Darius Blackman point guard and son of Cumberland coach Lonnie Thompson committed Saturday to Vanderbilt, . (sic)

Quote"I wanted to wait and see what place I felt most comfortable," Thompson said. "When I went to Vanderbilt, I felt really comfortable. I just knew this is where I wanted to go."

Thompson can't sign until the regular signing period, which begins April 17. Several other schools recruited him since the early signing period. Auburn, Butler, MTSU, N.C. State, Purdue and others made offers. Texas A&M also recruited Thompson.

Blackman coach Barry Wortman said MTSU recruited Thompson harder than any other school. MTSU offered Thompson a scholarship during his junior year.

"Darius had many great opportunities including Murray State, Butler, Tennessee and MTSU," Wortman said.

SEC Players of the Week

Florida's Scottie Wilbekin, a 6-foot-2, 176-pound junior guard from Gainesville, Fla., was named SEC Player of the Week after averaging 15 points, six assists and two rebounds in wins at Georgia and at Mississippi State...

The Rock PG was a two-star in the 2010 class out of Gainesville.

Kentucky's Nerlens Noel, a 6-foot-10, 244-pound freshman forward from Everett, Mass., was named SEC Freshman of the Week after averaging nine points, 10.5 rebounds and seven blocks against Alabama and LSU. Noel logged a career-high eight blocks in a set-back at Alabama before stretching his streak of six or more blocks in a game to five-straight games with six against LSU. He has now logged 83 blocks on the season which ranks as the second-most in a single-season in UK history...

Noel was #1 in the 2012 class.

Noel had six blocks against Ole Miss after he picked up his fourth foul on the road against a Top 20 team with All-SEC players on the blocks.

I don't think I have seen that in a college game in the modern error.

Strange: Tennessee, Georgia battling for wins and men's basketball recruits

UT's roster includes two scholarship players from Tennessee and four from Georgia.

Will the outcome of Wednesday's game between the Vols and Georgia Bulldogs at Thompson-Boling Arena have any impact in shaping the future of these two SEC rivals?

Tennessee assistant coach Tracy Webster doesn't think so.

Vols have three Georgians on the roster who were Rivals Top 150 recruits.

"Georgia recruited me,'' junior Jordan McRae of Midway, Ga., said Monday, "but I was pretty sold on Tennessee.''

The Bulldogs recruited senior Kenny Hall in Stone Mountain. Hall, however, was looking north to UT, which was then deep into a 10-game winning streak against the Bulldogs.

"I enjoyed the atmosphere at Tennessee a lot more than I did Georgia,'' Hall said. "I just really wanted to get out of Georgia.''

Junior Trae Golden of Powder Springs had Georgia on his mind and his shortlist, but ultimately picked Tennessee.

Freshman Armani Moore is UT's fourth Georgian. He attracted only mild interest from the Bulldogs, he said.

November signee A.J. Davis of Buford, Ga., will replace Hall on the roster next year.

The Atlanta metro area is important to UT because it's closer to campus than Memphis. Then again, it's important to a lot of schools.

Georgia (20) is the leading producer of SEC players, edging Texas (19) and Tennessee (17). (Those figures include walk-ons.)

The ACC schools also work Georgia hard.

Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel took a much-needed break from glorifying online relationships between two Samoan dudes to weigh in on the recruitment of Andrew Wiggins:

Multiple people around Wiggins hinted that there's a chance he'd choose Florida State, where both his parents attended, for a more low key college experience. Fulford said that Huntington Prep played six games in the state of Kentucky this year and drew nearly 35,000 people total in those games.

bigleadsportsTM ranks the top 50 college basketball players coming into '12-13.

5. Nerlens Noel, C, Kentucky – Expect a highlight reel's worth of blocks and dunks as a freshman before he leaves for the pros. Won't be the game-changer Anthony Davis was, though.

8. BJ Young, G, Arkansas – Best player in the SEC who gets the least amount of publicity. Shot 41 percent on 3-pointers, averaged 15.2 ppg as a freshman.

11. Jarnell Stokes, F, Tennessee – Averaged a modest 9.6 ppg, 7.4 rpg in just 17 games. The SEC lost a ton of talent, and he might be the best returning frontcourt player in the league.

21. Erik Murphy, F, Florida – Quietly emerged as a very good stretch 4 – he shot 42 percent from deep. Smart player who has an underrated handle.

24. Phil Pressey, G, Missouri – Dynamic point guard surrounded by talent should put the Tigers in Final 4 contention.

29. Alex Poythress, F, Kentucky – Freshman might lead the Wildcats in scoring.

32. Alex Oriakhi, PF, Missouri – Don't read into the transfer from Connecticut's disappointing junior year (6.7 ppg, 4.8 rpg). The Huskies were a mess. Expect him to improve on his sophomore numbers (9.6 ppg, 8.7 rpg).

34. Kenny Boynton, Florida – Shot 40 percent on 3-pointers. Should take over the Gators with Beal and Walker gone.

35. Rotnei Clarke, G, Butler - Most anticipated transfer (from Arkansas) in college hoops. Shot 43 percent in his last season with Razorbacks.

36. Kyle Wiltjer, F, Kentucky – Wildcats lost six players to the NBA and have a lot of new pieces. Wiltjer should be a 15 ppg glue-guy.

46. Mark Lyons, G, Xavier – [UPDATE: He transferred to Arizona. Replacement - Can we get a judges ruling on Ryan Harrow, G, Kentucky?]

Noel will not get the chance to finish strong after ACL injury.

They only have 6 former signees  on their team this year.  I am sure Harrow and Mayes the two transfers have one as well.  They likely awarded the rest to Walkons to help the RPI and will take them back if needed.

They only carried 7-8 last year as well.  Cal actually has a genius idea- so long as no one gets hurt...

Goodwin and Noel will probably go Pro.  There is a chance that Wiltjer will also go Pro.  Assuming that Wiltjer stays (which could very well happen), the following will probably be who they will have on Scholarship next season.

Point Guards

Ryan Harrow   6'2"
Andrew Harrison   6'5"
Jarrod Polson   6'2"

Shooting Guards

James Young   6'6"
Aaron Harrison   6'5"
Jon Hood   6'7"

Small Forward

Kyle Wiltjer   6'10"

Power Forwards

Alex Poythress   6'7"
Willie Cauley-Stein   7'0"
Marcus Lee   6'9"
Derek Willis   6'8"

Center

Dakari Johnson   6'10"

Willie Cauley-Stein is listed as a Forward on their Roster on their Athletic Web Site.  Until they get better play at PG, and until they get better play from Poythress at PF, they won't be as good as they could be, but Andrew Harrison may make them some better at PG, and Marcus Lee may make them some better at PF.

Forward Marcus Thornton is expected to play again for the Georgia basketball team, but Mark Fox doesn't think it will be this season.

Thornton, a junior, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and hasn't played for two months.

"This kid has been through a ton," Fox said. "We had a nice talk in Oxford (Miss.), and we fully anticipate Marcus Thornton will return to the court and play for us again. I don't think that we can put a timetable on that. He is still eligible for a medical redshirt if he cannot make it back this season. I'm not anticipating that he's going to be able to come back this year. He's not yet returned to practice. He just hasn't been cleared."

The 6-foot-8, 235-pound Thornton started 20 games last season and seven of the nine games he played this season. He was averaging 3.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game before his latest surgery. He's had three knee surgeries while at Georgia.

The namesake of a former SEC player of the year at LSU, Thornton was a 3-star and ranked #34 at the PF position in the 2010 class out of Westlake.

Andrew Wiggins named the Naismith National High School Player of the Year.

QuoteThe bigger question surrounding Wiggins is where he will spend his collegiate days. No one wants to bet against Kentucky, but over the past couple of months, the rumbling has been that Florida State is the favorite. Wiggins doesn't like the spotlight. He doesn't want the attention.

UF signee Walker shines on way to state title

For Bonifay Holmes County center Chris Walker, his last game as a Blue Devil on Wednesday couldn't have ended any better, winning the school's first state title in boys basketball.

And the 6-foot-10, 195-pound senior certainly had a lot to do with it — 30 points, 15 rebounds, seven blocks — in a dominating 59-40 win over Greensboro West Gadsden for the Class 1A championship.

Now the Florida signee shifts his attention to the Gators and the work needed to be done before he steps on campus in Gainesville.

"I have to work on getting stronger," said Walker, who along with fellow UF signee Kasey Hill of Montverde Academy is a McDonald's All-American. "I will be working on my footwork, my post moves, my jump shot. I will be working on a lot of the basic things."

Harrison twins lead team to Texas 5A State Championship

Quote"It makes it sweeter because we lost last year," said Andrew Harrison after the game. "Every great player wants to win a state championship. I felt it was our duty to do that." Andrew scored 16 points while grabbing 9 rebounds, earning him MVP honors in the 46-38 victory over South Grand Prairie.

Aaron was gimpy for the entirety of the game, turning his ankle in the opening minutes and only managing to score 8 points. "It's been a long, long road. We finally made it. Losing this game wouldn't have defined our high school career, but it ended it the right way."
