South Carolina (updated)

Darrin Horn, 39, former Tates Creek and Western Hilltopper completed his fourth season at SC. Horn is currently 23-41 (35.9%) in SEC regular season play which prorates to 5.75-10.25.  His first season was 10-6 and good for an NIT bid. The Gamecocks did not return to post season play in '10, '11, or '12 (after going 2-14 in SEC play). Horn's team lost in the first round of the NIT. His predecessor had better luck in that tourney.

Dave Odom was coach at USC for seven seasons. He made the NCAA-T once and the NIT three times. Odom's Gamecocks were NIT runnerups his first season in Columbia and NIT champs in '05 and '06.

Odom's teams never earned a first day bye in the SEC-T. His SEC regular season record of 41-71 (36.6%) prorates to a shade under 6-10 on average.

Eddie Fogler left an SEC Regular Season champion at Vandy to take the USC rebuilding job in 1993. The first two seasons were tough. Fogler's 1997 team went 15-1 in the SEC winning the regular season title outright and beating UK on their Senior Day. They were eliminated in the first round of the NCAA-T. Fogler took a USC team to another NCAA-T first round elimination the next season. These two were Fogler's only NCAA-T appearances for USC. They also made the NIT twice.

In Fogler's eight seasons in the SEC at USC, his regular season record was 57-71 (44.5%) which prorates a tad better than 7-9. His final three seasons yielded on 17 regular season conference wins.

Fogler replaced Steve Newton who coached the first two seasons that USC was in the SEC. Newton's overall record was 20-35. Newton was 8-24 in SEC regular season play.

Mark Fox, 43, just completed his third regular season at UGa. Fox is 19-29 (prorates to 6.3-9.7) in SEC regular season play to-date. His '11 team earned a spot in the NCAA-T, losing their opener as a 10-seed. UGa finished 5-11 in '12, tied for 10th in the SEC. They eliminated MS State in the SEC-T before losing to Vandy.

Pete Herrmann was an interim coach at UGa finishing the '09 season. His team defeated UK in Rupp on senior night, the last team to beat UK at home to-date.

Dennis Felton coached the Bulldogs from '03-'09 with an 84-91 record in six seasons at Georgia, including a 26-59 mark against SEC opponents (prorates to 4.9-11.1).  Felton's team won the 2008 SEC-T giving UGa their first NCAA appearance since '02 which was vacated. Felton also made the NIT twice.

Jim Harrick coached UGa for four seasons and he and Jim Harrick, Jr. left UGa with NCAA sanctions. Harrick's vacated victories leave him well under 50% during his SEC regular season career.

Ron Jirsa coached UGa for two seasons going 35-30 overall and well below .500 in SEC action.

Tubby Smith coached UGa for two seasons making the NCAA-T in both. His '96 team reached the NCAA-T Sweet 16. Coach Smith's SEC regular season record was 19-13 (59.4%) which prorates to 9.5-7.5.

Hugh Durham was the coach at UGa from '78 to '95 and of course was coaching the Bulldogs when the SEC expanded. In his SEC regular season career, Durham was 148-150. He was 31-33 during the SEC's 12 team era making two NIT first round appearances.

Coach Durham took UGa to the NCAA Final Four in '83. UGa made four other trips to the Big Dance during his UGa tenure. Of course Coach Durham took Florida State to the NCAA final game in '72 losing to UCLA.

The '99 team finished 29-4 and Auburn won the SEC Tourney. The '00 team was an SI preseason pick to win it all. Agent dealings cost Auburn's Porter eligilibilty. The '03 team made the Sweet 16.

Tommy Joe Eagles was the Auburn head man when the SEC expanded.  During his five seasons, AU was 29-55 (34.5%) which prorates to 5.5-10.5. Eagles won the 1990 SEC Coach of the Year award defeating Rick Pitino et al.

Clay: Given its tradition it's easy to see why SC gave up on Horn

QuoteIt's perfectly understandable why South Carolina would want to fire Darrin Horn after four seasons... After all, the Gamecocks have such a rich and storied basketball history.

Since 1975, number of South Carolina trips to the NCAA Tournament: 4.

Since 1974, number of South Carolina wins in the NCAA Tournament: 0.

After the legendary Frank McGuire, who had not won an NCAA Tourney game in seven seasons, was pushed out in 1980, Bill Foster, George Felton, Steve Newton, Eddie Fogler and Dave Odom, before Horn, tried and failed at South Carolina. Foster had taken Duke to the 1978 NCAA title game where it lost to UK. Felton had been a top assistant to Bobby Cremins at Georgia Tech. Newton had won at Murray State. Fogler had won at Vanderbilt. Odom had won at Wake Forest.

The five combined for four NCAA Tournament appearances while coaching in Columbia.

Mississippi State (updated)

State has had only two coaches spanning the SEC Expansion Era, Richard Williams and Rick Stansbury.  With the ouster of Stansbury, State may look to hire outside for the first time since 1981.

52-year old Rick Stansbury finished his 23rd season on staff at State, his 14th as head coach.  His regular season conference record ends at 122-102 or 54.5%. That prorates to 8.7-7.3 across a 16-game schedule. Stansbury's teams won the SEC-T in '02 and '09. They won the regular season title in '04. State has been to the NCAA 2nd Round four times, his biggest advancement, the last time in '08.

Stansbury's teams made the NCAA six of fourteen times. They have been in post season play every season but two.

Stansbury's mentor Richard Williams coached State for 12 seasons. In '91 he took them to their second NCAA-T appearance ever and first since '63. (State had waived appearances in other seasons. The '63 appearance is remarkable. Google it.)

State shared the '91 regular season championship with LSU. In '96 State won the SEC-T over Kentucky and made the NCAA-T Final Four losing to Syracuse. Williams also led State to the Sweet 16 in '95.

During his tenure, State made the NCAA-T three times and post season play five times.

Williams's overall regular season SEC percentage was 44% which prorates to an average 7-9.  Williams had a combined 23-49 in his first four seasons and finished at State with a 4-12 campaign. State was 26-8 overall in '96.

Ole Miss (updated)

Andy Kennedy, 44 completed his sixth season at Ole Miss.  Kennedy is 46-50 (47.9%) which prorates to a 7.67-8.33 average.

Kennedy has not led an Ole Miss to the NCAA-T. They have made the NIT five times, reaching the semifinals twice. Kennedy's team earned SEC-T byes in his first season and in 2011.

In Dec. 2008 Kennedy and his staff were involved in an incident with a cab driver. A number of questionable decisions were made by the Coach in the moments and days following his arrest. Kennedy was caught on police cam asserting that his arrest would be an international incident. He and his counselor sued an eyewitness who was a college student working part time as a valet for defamation of character. His wife through counsel also sued for loss of consortium. Kennedy and his attorneys did not count on a citizen obtaining one of the leading attorneys in Cincinnati to defend the eyewitness. Kennedy dropped the suit against the eyewitness and chose to pay an undisclosed sum of cash.

Kennedy was preceded by Rod Barnes a former All-SEC player at Ole Miss in the late 80s. Barnes coached eight seasons and was 50-78 (39%) which prorates to a 6.25-9.75 per season average. Barnes took Ole Miss to the NCAA-T in three of his first four seasons and the NIT his second season. Barnes took Ole Miss to the Sweet Sixteen in '01 after finishing 1st in the SEC-W. This is the only Sweet Sixteen appearance for Ole Miss.

Barnes had an over-.500 conference record in his first four seasons. His last four seasons he finished tied for 5th in the SEC-W and 4-12 was the typical record.

Rob Evans was coach at Ole Miss for six seasons. He led the Rebels to NCAA-T appearances in his last two seasons of '97 and '98. It was Ole Miss first NCAA-T appearance since winning the SEC-T in 1981 for their first ever NCAA-T trip. Evans also led Ole Miss to a huge win in Rupp Arena over Tubby Smith's National Championship team on Valentine's Day, 1998. It is to-date one of only two wins by the Rebels over UK in Lexington. The first was in 1927. Coach Evans was 86-81 overall at Ole Miss and left to take the Arizona State job.

Ed Murphy coached Ole Miss from '86 to '92 and Murph's last season was the first year of SEC Expansion. He was 76-98 overall at Ole Miss.

LSU (updated)

Trent Johnson, 55 completed his fourth season at LSU. His first LSU team won the SEC regular season championship going 13-3. His overall record was 27-8 and LSU advanced to the NCAA second round. Johnson suffered two tough seasons in '10 and '11 and after a 7-9 run in '12 is now 25-39 (39.1%) or 6.2 - 9.8 prorated.  The '12 team was one and done in the NIT.

Butch Pierre was 5-4 as an interim replacing ASU Coach John Brady mid-season in '08.

John Brady coached LSU for 10.5 seasons in a feast or famine type of run.  Brady finished sixth in the SEC-W five times.  This included three of his first four seasons and his last two seasons. Brady's teams earned first round SEC-T byes in five other seasons.

Brady's 2006 team reached the NCAA-T Final Four. This was LSU's fourth Final Four appearance ever but their only one during the SEC Expansion Era to-date. Brady also reached the NCAA-T Sweet 16 in his third season. Brady's teams reached the NCAA-T four times and the NIT two times.

Brady's SEC conference regular season record was 74-93 (44.3%) prorated to 7-9 as an average season. Brady's 2000 team shared the SEC regular season title with an overall 28-6 record (12-4 SEC). His Final Four team finished 27-9 (14-2 SEC) and was outright SEC regular season champs.

Dale Brown had the second longest SEC Basketball coaching tenure ever.  Brown coached from 1972 to 1997. Coach Brown first made the post season in his seventh season at LSU. Brown then made the post season 15 consecutive years. His teams failed to make the post season his last four years. Coach Brown's teams made the NCAA-T ten consecutive seasons.

Coach Brown's teams made the NCAA-T Sweet 16 five times, the Elite 8 four times, and the Final Four twice. LSU won the SEC regular season championship outright in '79, '81 and '85 and shared the title in '91. LSU won the SEC Tourney in 1980, the second year of the revived tournament. Coach Brown's best record was with his '81 team which went 31-5 (17-1 SEC).

Brown's SEC regular season record was 238-200 (54.3%) or 8.7-7.3 prorated. His latter seasons after SEC Expansion were some of his tougher seasons. Coach Brown went 39-57 (40.6%) in six seasons prorating to 6.5-9.5.

Bama (updated)

Anthony Grant, 45 just completed his third regular season at Bama. A rough non-conference run in '11 led to an NIT bid despite a 12-4 SEC record. Despite issues with conference season suspensions, Bama received an NCAA-T bid. Better out of conference scheduling led to a much improved RPI despite a 9-7 SEC record. Grant is now 27-21 in SEC regular season games which prorates to 9-7.

Philip Pearson was an interim coach at Bama who replaced Mark Gottfried in season in '09. Pearson was 5-6 during his regular season run.

Mark Gottfried coached at Bama for 10.5 seasons. His regular season SEC record of 84-83 of course prorates a shade better than 8-8. Gottfried led Bama to five straight NCAA-T appearances from his 4th season to his 8th. His '04 team (20-13, 8-8 SEC) made the NCAA-T Elite 8, Bama's best showing in the Big Dance ever. Bama made the post season 8 times under Gottfried reportedly turning down an invite to the CBI in '08.

Gottfried's '02 team was the SEC regular season champion (12-4). His '03 team was Number 1 in the AP poll for two weeks, the first time ever for Bama.

David Hobbs coached at Bama from '92-93 to '97-98. In his six seasons, Bama made the second round of the NCAA-T twice. Hobbs had a 110-76 overall record during his Bama tenure and a 50-46 record in SEC conference play.

Winfrey Sanderson coached Bama's first year in the expanded SEC and his last of 12 seasons as Bama's head man.  Sanderson was 10-6 in his last SEC regular season taking Bama to the SEC-T finals and the NCAA 2nd round. Sanderson was associated with Bama athletics for 32 years until Nancy Watts' face made contact with his hand.

Sanderson led Bama to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA-T six times. His teams won the SEC Conference Tourney in '82, '87, '89, '90, and '91. Bama also won the SEC regular season title in '87.

Vanderbilt (updated)

51-year old Kevin Stallings completed his 13th season at Vandy. Stallings is 103-105 in regular season SEC games for a 49.5% winning percentage. That prorates to a 7.9-8.1 average record. Home v. Road win percentage is not readily available.

After failing to have a winning conference record in his first four seasons, Stallings has dipped below 8-8 only once and that was at 7-9. Vandy has made the NCAA six times counting '12, twice to the Sweet Sixteen. This represents two of six times Vandy has made the Sweet Sixteen ever. Roy Skinner took Vandy to the Elite Eight during Kentucky's off season in '65 and in a 16-team tournament field. Vandy has won neither the SEC regular season but did win their first SEC-T under Stallings in '12. They have finished second in the SEC-E twice, including a 12-4 run last season. Vandy has been in post season play 10 of 13 seasons. Vandy lost to 4-seed Wisconsin in their 2nd NCAA-T game in '12.

Stallings was a teammate of Arkansas native JB Carroll during his playing days at Purdue.

Jan van Breda Kolff preceded Stallings at Vandy and coached for six seasons. Jan was the SEC Player of the Year in 1974 and helped Vandy gain a share of the Conference regular season title and a Sweet 16 run in the NCAA-T.

Jan was 43-53 for a prorated average of 7-9. van Breda Kolff took Vandy to the NCAA first round once in his six seasons. Vandy was in the NIT three times, runners up in '94.

Eddie Fogler was Vandy's coach for four seasons. His last two seasons were the first two of the SEC expansion era. Fogler went 38-30 in conference regular season play prorating to a 9-7 mark. He took Vandy to the NCAA twice and to the NIT the other two seasons.

For Fogler, Vandy was the NIT Champ in '90. In '93, Vandy won the SEC regular season championship with a 14-2 mark. Vandy made the Sweet 16 and finished with an overall 28-6 record.

Fogler left Vandy to take on a rebuilding task at South Carolina.

Tennessee (updated)

The Vols have had six coaches spanning the 12-Team SEC Expansion Era ('91-92 to '11-'12).

Cuonzo Martin, 40 took the Vol head coaching job after leading the Missouri State Bears for three seasons. The Vols went 10-6 in the '12 SEC regular season and earned second place via the SEC tie-breaker. Tennessee lost to Middle Tennessee State in the second round of the NIT.

Bruce Pearl, 50 was coach for six seasons at UT.  In SEC regular season play, Pearl is 65-31 (including his 8-game suspension in '11), a 68% winning percentage. This prorates to a 10.8-5.2 SEC average season.

Pearl took UT to the NCAA-T each season. 2010 was the Vols first Elite Eight appearance in program history. Pearl has also made the Sweet Sixteen twice. Tennessee won the SEC regular season crown in '08 and finished with an overall 31-5 record. The Vols earned a first round SEC bye in Pearl's first four seasons, failing last season in the Elite Eight year. Out of conference road wins were enough to propel UT into the tourney this season.

AD Mike Hamilton made remarks on a radio program that seemed to distract the Vols and after a good start they lost by 30 in their first round game against Michigan in '11.

Pearl was preceded by Buzz Peterson who was Michael Jordan's college roommate. Buzz coached four years at UT. His regular season conference record was 29-35 (45%). This prorates to a 7.25-8.75 average season. Buzz failed to make the NCAA-T and his team was eliminated in the NIT in the first round in two tries.

Jerry Green coached UT for four seasons from '97-98 to '00-01. His regular season conference record was 41-23 (63%) going 12-4 twice. This prorates to a 10-6 average. Green took the Vols to the NCAA-T each season with the Sweet Sixteen being their crowning achievement. At the time it was UT's second Sweet Sixteen appearance ever and first in 19 seasons. Tennessee shared the SEC Regular Season championship in 2000.

Current USC Coach Kevin O'Neill coached UT for three seasons and could not get a rebuilding job accomplished. O'Neill was hired after his Marquette team defeated UK in the NCAA-T second round in '94.

O'Neill was 14-24 in SEC regular season play. He made the post season once, a first round elimination in the NIT.

Wade Houston coached at UT for five seasons. He was the first black head coach in a major sport in SEC history. Houston was Denny Crum's long time assistant at UofL and he brought his son Allan who became UT's all-time leading scorer.

Coach Houston's teams failed to make the NCAA-T. They did qualify for the NIT twice. He twice lost 22 games overall and his last season, '93-94 saw a 5-22 record, UT's worst in history.

The current dean of SEC coaches is 46-year old Billy "The Kid" Donovan.  Coach Donovan has two NCAA championships, one other NCAA finals appearance, and two more elite eight accomlishments following this his 16th season at Florida. Florida won the SEC Tournament three consecutive seasons, '05, '06, and '07, in Coach's 16 appearances to-date. The Gators won the SEC regular season title outright in '07 and '11 shared it in '00 and '01.

Donovan is 160-100 in SEC regular season games, 10-6 prorated.

In Donovan's first two rebuilding seasons Florida was 11-21. Donovan has been to the post season every year except his first and an NCAA 7-seed this season.  Florida landed in the NIT in the two seasons following his back-to-back NCAA championships.

Florida has had only two head coaches during the expansion era. Donovan's predecessor was Lon Kruger.

Kruger coached for six seasons, the first one prior to the expansion era. He led the Gators to their first Final Four in '94. Florida's first NCAA appearance ever was in '87 under Norm Sloan when the Gators made the Sweet Sixteen and Billy Donovan made the Final Four as a player at Providence.

Kruger's last season was a losing one. He finished with a 52% SEC conference winning percentage. Florida also made a first round NCAA tourney appearance in '95.

13 of Florida's 16 NCAA Tournament appearances have been post-expansion. Prior to 1975, only the conference recognized champion could participate in the tournament. The tournament did not expande to 64 teams until 1985.

Big Hires during the Expansion Era.

In retrospect Donovan was a big hire for Florida out of Marshall and prior to expansion, Nolan was a big hire for the Razorbacks out of Tulsa once he had time to establish his program.

What were the big hires at the time of hire.

Pitino had been 52-30 with the Knicks and advanced to the second round of the playoffs his prior season. Given the fact that UK's lineup would be decimated and they would be off TV and postseason for two years, it was a big hire at the time.

Fogler won the SEC regular season at Vandy in '93 over Arkansas, Kentucky and others.  Given their rebuilding years it was a big hire for USC at the time.

Calipari had not coached at a BCS school but did have a 30-win season streak established. It was a big hire and a risky hire. Calipari noted that he was passed over for the UK job in '07.

Trent Johnson was coming off of a 28-8, Sweet 16 season at Stanford.

While he was on the decline, Dave Odom had been 101-87 in the ACC regular season at Wake Forest. He had been to the Sweet Sixteen three times with one Elite 8 appearance. Tim Duncan helped.

Gillispie had rebuilt A&M and had won an NCAA-T game over UofL and Pitino in Rupp Arena.

Tubby Smith had been impressive at UGa and was a former UK assistant. As UK's first black head coach in any major sport he was a noteworthy hire and probably won a national title with Pitino's players that Pitino would not have won.

Stan Heath of course had a one-time, first time 30-win Elite 8 season inheriting the veteran line up at Kent St.

Bruce Pearl came off of a mid-major Sweet 16 and Horizon dominance and promptly punched the SEC in the mouth upon arrival.

Mike Anderson averaged 11-5 in C-USA with a 12-2 mark his last season. His UAB team defeated number one overall seed Kentucky in '04. After rebuilding Missouri coming off the Quin Snyder Error, Anderson reached the Elite 8 with a 31-win season in '09. The long-time Arkansas assistant was warmly welcomed home.

Frank Martin has averaged 10-6 in the Big XII at Kansas State. More noteworthy has been recent NCAA tournament runs with the Elite 8 and 29 total wins in '10 and NCAA Third Round (the new second round with the First Four) achievement in '11 and '12.

SEC Basketball has not kept up with SEC Football in terms of big hires in the expansion era.

To restore fortunes rapidly without a Jim Harrick fiasco, a school may need to make a big hire or be brilliant in picking the right up-and-comer and having  more patience while not waiting too long to pull the trigger.

Trent Johnson went to TCU.

Bruce Pearl still has two years remaining on his show cause penalty.

Georgia (6-9) is heading on the road to face 17th-ranked Missouri (12-3), returns home to play an LSU team against which it should be competitive, then gets Florida again in Athens and Texas A&M on the road. The potential to get off to an 0-6 start through the first third of the conference schedule is not only possible, but likely.

Then what?

The modern mentality is to say you fire the coach and start over. But I'm not convinced that's the answer.

Mark Fox came to Georgia with a strong resume and with a reputation as an Xs-and-Os coach who could scheme with the best of them. He won at a high level at Nevada, which had UNLV to deal with and did not have nearly the resources and exposure that's available at UGA and in the SEC.

But Fox hasn't been able to transfer that success to Athens. He has had one good season in three. He was 21-12 in Year 2 and had a one-game appearance in the NCAA Tournament. But he made that run with a roster of contributors recruited to UGA by the previous regime. The Bulldogs were 14-17 and 15-17 his other two seasons.

In total, Fox is 56-55 (.505) overall and 25-38 (.397) in SEC play at the halfway point of his fourth season. He hasn't been getting it done.

As the Bulldogs lumber through what is shaping up to be another mediocre season at best, what they're asking is, "why can't Georgia play winning basketball consistently?"

QuoteIt is not the first time this has come up. People have wondered that for years. This is, after all, a basketball program that has in its 108-year history recorded 20 or more wins in a season just nine times and logged a winning mark in conference play only 14 times.

"You're asking the wrong guy about that," said Hugh Durham, who led Georgia to four 20-plus-win seasons and its only Final Four appearance in 17 years as its coach (1979-95). "I took a lot of pride in the fact that we were pretty consistent. But other guys have done a good job. Tubby (Smith) did a good job. Jim Harrick turned out a couple of outstanding teams. But I don't know. We had some pretty good players when you really get down to it."

That is the one constant theme that comes up when discussing both the program's regular struggles and the pockets of success it has had over the decades. When Georgia has been very good, it has had very good players...

Fox, who's hoping to avoid a third losing season in four, pleads for patience.

"These guys need time," Fox said. "They're talented players, they just need time."

Scarblog: It's SEC Tournament time; where's Wimp Sanderson when you need him?

QuoteThere's good news and bad news for Alabama basketball fans heading to the SEC Tournament in Nashville in the next few days.

The good news: Wimp Sanderson is going to be there.

The bad news: The best coach in that event's history is not going to be coaching the Crimson Tide. Instead the ESPN 973 The Zone radio co-host will be honored as one of 14 Allstate SEC Basketball Legends.

If he were coaching, you could make reservations through Sunday and not worry about your hotel's cancellation policy. As sure things go, the only thing more predictable at the league's annual roundball extravaganza than Sanderson reaching the final is Kentucky fans taking over the town.

Anthony Grant hasn't done a bad job there. He's won his first game in each of his first three SEC Tournaments, a streak unseen at Alabama since David Hobbs first took the baton from Sanderson.

Grant will have to continue that streak and then some this week.

With Sanderson as head coach in the tournament, Alabama:

Went 25-7.

If you're scoring at home - and counting Sanderson's last season, when Alabama lost in the 1992 final to Kentucky - it's now 21 years and 21 SEC Tournaments and counting without a single title for the Tide or the Tigers.

Auburn's 23 overall losses tied the 1966-67 LSU team for the most in SEC history. LSU went 3-23 that year; Auburn finishes 9-23. So there's that going for Auburn.

The last two SEC coaches to lose 22 or more games were gone ASAP: Tennessee's Wade Houston in 1993-94 after he survived losing 22 in 1990-91, and Mississippi State's Bob Boyd in 1985-86.

Jay Jacobs issued a statement regarding the men's basketball program and Tony Barbee Friday afternoon:

Quote"This was obviously a disappointing season for our men's basketball program, but I want to commend our players and especially our seniors for playing hard all year. My expectation is for our program to show significant improvement under coach Barbee's leadership.

"Coach Barbee and I will continue to work together to support our basketball program at the highest level so we can give our fans the kind of program they expect and deserve."

Auburn (9-23) lost to A&M in the opening round of the SEC tournament, capping a stretch of 10 defeats in a row and 16 of 17 in the worst single-season stretch in program history.

Barbee, who makes $1.5 million annually, is under contract through 2017 with a buyout of $750,000 per year or more than $3 million as of today.

Following Wednesday's loss, Barbee said the dreadful 2013 season "all falls on me."

Fifth-year payoff goal for Fox, Georgia basketball

Kevin Stallings isn't the biggest name in college basketball coaching. He has never won a national championship. He has never even been to a Final Four.

But Stallings is extremely respected around the coaching fraternity for the simple fact he has done very well at Vanderbilt. And for the purposes of the Georgia men's basketball program, Stallings is the model for what the Bulldogs hope will happen with Mark Fox.Through four seasons, Fox has led the Bulldogs to just one winning season. They made the NCAA tournament that year, but they didn't win a game.

During Stallings' first four years at Vanderbilt, the Commodores never reached the NCAAs. They were only good enough to make the NIT twice.

He was hired in 2000 after guiding a mid-major (Illinois State) to multiple NCAA tournament bids -- just like Fox did at Nevada. In Stallings' first year, Vanderbilt won 19 games, then the win totals were 15, 17 and 11. The Commodores' SEC record was 21-41 during those four seasons, and, in Stallings' fourth season, Vanderbilt bottomed out at 11-18 overall and 3-13 in the SEC, finishing last in the SEC East. But Stallings didn't get the hook. And the next year, the Commodores exploded with a 23-10 overall record and a Sweet 16 trip. That started a run where Vanderbilt was in the NCAAs six out of nine years. Starting with Year 5 of his tenure, Stallings guided Vanderbilt to seven 20-win seasons and at least 16 wins every season.

I'm guessing Georgia would take that for the next decade, even if it means a few NCAA tournament flameouts, as has occurred under Stallings.

"I told my wife this morning that we probably ought to do a study," Stallings said last week before the SEC tournament. "We ought to figure out how many coaches have been in the same job for 14 or 15 years in the country that hasn't been to a Final Four, which we have not been, obviously."

Stallings' record his first four seasons at Vanderbilt was 62-59 overall and 21-43 in the SEC.

Fox's record his first four seasons at Georgia is 65-63 overall and 28-37 in the SEC.

Kevin Stallings said this basketball season might have been among his best coaching jobs at Vanderbilt, and he will be disappointed if the Commodores don't make a "solid run" at an NCAA Tournament berth in 2013-14.

Vanderbilt concluded its season in the SEC Tournament semifinals Saturday with a loss to eventual champion Ole Miss. The Commodores won six of their final eight games to finish 16-17.

Billy Donovan and Tubby Smith match up again Sunday when Florida meets Minnesota in a third round NCAA game. Tubby is one of the former SEC head coaches who made the tournament and one of the few who remain.

Smith was at UGa when the current dean of SEC coaches, Donovan started his career at UF. It was rebuilding then for Billy but Tubby took a 24-9 record to the first black head coach at UK after being the first at UGa and of course winning the NCAA-T in Billy's second rebuilding year.

UK was a "disappointing" Elite Eight team in 1999 while Billy got the Gators to the Sweet Sixteen, their best success in five years.

In 2000, it took a downturn for "Father Flanagan" as he caught in-state grief for playing his son over an in-state hero that would sit at the end of Calipari's bench if playing today. Billy made the NCAA finals and took the upper hand until 2003.

Tubby had a great run in 2003-05 including a 19-0 SEC season as part of a 26-game winning streak and a couple of Elite Eight appearances while Billy had trouble with some characters of his won. Then Billy recruited the "sons of pro athletes plus Corey Brewer" who took him back-to-back while Tubby turned down in-state sharp shooter and future SEC MVP Chris Lofton for a collection of guards including Rajon Rondo who never meshed.

Tubby escaped to Minnesota while Billy, who almost landed with the Orlando Magic, did a reverse-Dana Altman and is ready to renew the rivalry with Orlando Smith.

Tubby Smith has reportedly been fired as Gophers men's basketball coach, CBSsports.com's Jeff Goodman is reporting. The Star Tribune is working to confirm the report. A team source said Smith and his staff are meeting with U of M administrators this afternoon. The same source said Smith has not been told yet that he is fired.

Smith led the Gophers to three NCAA tournament appearances in his six seasons on the job as well as the team's first official NCAA tourney victory since 1990 on Friday against UCLA, but it apparently wasn't enough to save his job.

Smith's contract comes with a $2.5 million buyout — a number that jumped from $1.5 million after he signed an extension last summer shortly after Norwood Teague took over as Minnesota's athletic director.

Bama

Anthony Grant, 47 in April'13, just completed his fourth regular season at Bama. A rough non-conference run led to an NIT bid. Grant is now 39-27 in SEC regular season games. At 59.1% that prorates to 10.6-7.4 over an 18 game schedule. Grant's team made the NCAA-T field in '12 as a nine-seed and they lost their opener to eight-seed Creighton.

Auburn

Tony Barbee, 41 finished his third SEC regular season last in league with a cumulative 12-38 (.240). Barbee is from the Coach Calipari coaching tree and has close ties to William Wesley though he has apparently kept this close to the vest to-date.

Jeff Lebo coached Auburn for six seasons going 35-61 in regular season SEC play and prorating to 5.8-10.2. He led Auburn to only one NIT appearance.

Renaissance man Cliff Ellis coached Auburn for 10 seasons going 73-87 (45.6%) which prorates to 7.3-8.7 over his career. Ellis took Auburn to the NCAA-T in '99, '00, and '03.

The current dean of SEC coaches is 48-year old (in May) Billy "The Kid" Donovan.  Coach Donovan has two NCAA championships, one other NCAA finals appearance, and threes Elite Eight appearances in the last three seasons ending with this his 17th season at Florida. Florida won the SEC Tournament three consecutive seasons, '05, '06, and '07, in Coach's 17 appearances to-date. The Gators won the SEC regular season title outright in '07, '11, and '13 shared it in '00 and '01.

Donovan is 174-100 in SEC regular season games, 63.5%.

In Donovan's first two rebuilding seasons Florida was 11-21. Donovan has been to the post season every year except his first and an NCAA 2-seed this season.  Florida landed in the NIT in two seasons following his back-to-back NCAA championships.

Georgia

Mark Fox, 44 just completed his fourth  season at UGa. Fox is 28-38 (prorates to 7-9.5) in SEC regular season play to-date. His '11 team earned a spot in the NCAA-T with an early exit.

Pete Herrmann was an interim coach at UGa finishing the '09 season.

Dennis Felton coached the Bulldogs from '03-'09 with an 83-91 overall record.  Felton's team won the 2008 SEC-T in the tornado tournament giving UGa their first NCAA appearance since '02. (The '02 appearance was vacated).

Kentucky

UK had two head coaches from '30-31 to '84-85. They have had more frequent turnover since.

John Calipari, 54 completed his fourth season at UK with a regular season conference record of 52-14 (78.8%) which prorates to 14-4. Calipari's team won the SEC Regular Season in '10 and advanced to the NCAA-T Elite 8. UK won the SEC-T in '10 and '11 under Calipari. The '11 team was UK's first final four team since '98. The '12 team went undefeated in the SEC regular season and won the national championship. The '13 team finished second in the SEC, failed to qualify for the NCAA-T and lost in the first round of the NIT to Robert Morris, a game played in Moon Township, PA (Calipari's home township) due to Rupp Arena being booked for the NCAA-T and UK not having enough staffers with energy to host an NIT game.

Billy Gillispie coached for two seasons at UK. He filed a lawsuit against Kentucky for breach of memorandum of understanding that was settled out of court. An error in judgment Gillispie made was getting arrested for a DUI in Kentucky the evening before the scheduled settlement.

Gillispie was 20-12 in SEC regular season play (62.5%) which prorates to 10-6. Gillispie's '08 team which was 12-4 in the SEC was eliminated in the first round of the NCAA-T. His 8-8 SEC team in '09 accepted a bid to the NIT snapping UK's NCAA consecutive appearance record dating back to the '91 season when UK was on probation. UK hosted their NIT opener in Memorial Coliseum as Rupp was booked for Disney on Ice.

Tubby Smith left Georgia to come to UK for the '97-98 season and coached at Kentucky for 10 seasons. His first UK team won the NCAA National Championship.

Coach Smith's SEC regular season record was 120-40 which of course prorates to 12-4. Each Smith team at UK went to the NCAA-T second round at a minimum. He had six teams make the Sweet Sixteen and four make the Elite Eight including the Championship team.

Smith's '03 team went undefeated in the SEC regular season and won the SEC Tourney (19-0) before advancing to the Elite 8. Smith's '04 team was the NCAA Tourney #1 overall seed before being eliminated in the second round by Mike Anderson's UAB team.

Coach Smith's teams won the SEC-T five times: '98, '99, '01, '03, and '04. His teams won the SEC regular season outright in '98, '03, and '05 and shared the title in '99 and '01. Smith left UK to coach Minnesota.

Rick Pitino was coaching UK when the SEC expanded. Pitino's regular season SEC record during his 8 seasons at UK was 104-28.  During the SEC expansion era Pitino was 80-16 (83.3%) which prorates to 13.3-2.7.

Pitino's UK teams won the SEC-T each season (five times) during the expansion era except in '96 when they won the NCAA-T. Pitino's teams went to the NCAA Elite 8 five times, the Final Four three times, and the NCAA final game twice. Pitino left UK to coach the Celtics.

He won his second national championship earlier this week at Louisville.

LSU

Johnny Jones, 50, followed Johnson after an 11-year run at North Texas where he won 50.8% of his conference games and he made the NCAA-T twice. Jones first LSU team in '13 went 9-9 in the regular season finishing 9th in league. It was not enough for post season play.

Trent Johnson completed four seasons at LSU. His first LSU team won the SEC regular season championship going 13-3. His overall record was 27-8 and LSU advanced to the NCAA second round. Johnson suffered two tough seasons in '10 and '11 and after a 7-9 run in '12 wrapped up at LSU with a 25-39 (39.1%) or 6.2 - 9.8 prorated regular season conference record.  The '12 team was one and done in the NIT. Johnson went to TCU where his '13 team was 1-16 in conference.

Ole Miss

Andy Kennedy, 45 finished his seventh season at Ole Miss with his first trip to the NCAA-T advancing to the third round.  Kennedy is currently 66-64 (50.7%) which prorates to a 9.1-8.9 average. Ole Miss won the SEC-T for the first time since the early 80s and their 27 wins is a school record.

Mississippi State

Rick Ray was named State head coach for the '12-13 season from Clemson where he was an assistant.  Player transfers, injuries, and suspensions led Ray's first season as one of the toughest in the SEC until Auburn came along. Ray's team was 4-14 in the regular season but got a late-season win over eventual SEC-T winner Ole Miss with Marshall Henderson, Murphy Holloway, and Reginald Buckner. State lost some early season out-of-conference games to 300+ RPI teams in what would normally be guarantee games.

Rick Stansbury completed 23 seasons on staff at State, and 14 as head coach.  His regular season conference record ended in '11-12 at 122-102 or 54.5%. That prorated to 8.7-7.3. Stansbury's teams won the SEC-T in '02 and '09. They won the regular season title in '04. State has been to the NCAA 2nd Round four times, his farthest advancement, the last time in '08.

Stansbury's teams made the NCAA six of fourteen times. They have been in post season play every season but three. There is no post-season for State in '11. The distraction during the last three years due to player issues led to the end of Rick's tenure. His long time assistant, Phil Cunningham got the head coaching job at Troy after the '13 season.

Missouri

In 2011 Miami Coach Frank Haith, 47, took over for Mike Anderson who had taken the Tigers to the Elite Eight and the second round of the NCAA tournament after turning around the program following the Quin Snyder era.

Haith coached Mizzou to a 14-4 mark in the Big 12 but dropped their NCAA opener to Norfolk State. Haith's first SEC season ended tied for fifth at 11-7. Mizzou lost their NCAA opener.  Haith has been subject to a prolonged and bitter NCAA investigation tied to his time at Miami. He seemed to catch a break in 2013 when the NCAA acknowledged wrongdoing in their handling of the case. The next steps are scheduled to be addressed in the summer of 2013.

South Carolina

Gamecocks made a rare big name hire when they lured Frank Martin, now 47, as head coach from Kansas State. Martin had made and advanced in the NCAA-T in four of his five seasons leading the Wildcats.

His conference record in this first rebuilding season at SC was 4-14 and the overall under .500 record was not good enough to rate post season play. Martin has since nearly turned the entire team over, retaining two-sport star Bruce Ellington.

Darrin Horn, a former Tates Creek and Western Hilltopper completed his four seasons at SC before being let go in '12. He has done work as an analyst on Mark Cuban's sports network. Horn finished 23-41 (35.9%) in SEC regular season play which prorates to 5.75-10.25.  His first season was 10-6 and good for an NIT bid. The Gamecocks did not return to post season play in '10, '11, or '12 (after going 2-14 in SEC play). Horn's '09 team lost in the first round of the NIT.

His final three seasons yielded only 17 regular season conference wins.

Fogler replaced Steve Newton who coached the first two seasons that USC was in the SEC. Newton's overall record was 20-35. Newton was 8-24 in SEC regular season play.
