Story: Recruiting 'star system' doesn't guarantee NFL Draft success

QuoteOf the 32 players who were drafted in Thursday's first round, there were more Rivals.com three-star recruits (12) than either four-stars or five-stars (eight of each). Heck, there were four two-stars taken in round one.

Of the four former two-star recruits taken in the first round, three were cornerbacks...

None of the four players from the state of Georgia that were taken in the first round of this year's NFL Draft had scholarship offers out of high school from UGA or Alabama.

Quote...out of the eight players from Georgia selected in the first round over the last two years, only one – North Gwinnett High School's Ja'Wuan James – had offers from both UGA and Alabama.

So what's going on?

Class rankings: May 20 update http://es.pn/1LbQlMu

QuoteWhile offensive prospects, including five-star QB Jacob Eason, lead Georgia's class, it was some defensive additions that helped the Bulldogs push into the top-five for the first time in the 2016 cycle. In-state ESPN 300 CB Chad Clay gives Georgia a tall, aggressive and well-rounded player to develop in the secondary and the Bulldogs also recently added four-star DL Tyler Clark.

1. FSU
4. UGa
5. OM
6. LSU
11. Bama
14. UK

Can you guess which college has, on average, the highest-paid players in the NFL?

QuoteAccording to a report from SportingIntelligence, which ranked the NFL's top 35 earning groups from the 2014 season, the top school is Ole Miss.

The Rebels currently have 18 former players in the NFL, and between them they make an average salary of $4.1 million per year. Second on the list is Virginia with a $3.4 million average annual salary for its former players.

Obviously, former Ole Miss quarterback Eli Manning and his $19.8 million salary in 2014-2015 play a major role in the rankings, as does defensive end Greg Hardy, who made $13.1 million this past year...

Here's a look at some of the other SEC schools on the list.

    1. Ole Miss (18 players): $4.1 million

    8. Tennessee (28): $3 million

    9. Georgia (34): $2.7 million

    13. Texas A&M (19): $2.4 million

    14. Florida (31): $2.4 million

    15. Auburn (25): $2.3 million

    19. Alabama (36): $2.2 million

    21. Missouri (17): $2.1 million

    23. South Carolina (24): $2 million

    26. LSU (31): $1.9 million

    33. Arkansas (15): $1.4 million

Crimson Tide led all teams with 36 former players in the NFL during the 2014 season.

Minimum 15 players requirement would take out some of the non-SEC schools on this list.

5-stars don't always end up being 1st round draft picks: Who are some of Ole Miss' biggest over/underachievers? http://www.clarionledger.com/story/olemisssports/2015/07/06/five-underoverachievers-for-ole-miss/29795841/ ...

QuoteUnder

Damore'ea Stringfellow

The Washington transfer has never played a down for Ole Miss, so there's time still for the wideout to work his way down to the bottom half of this list where we outline the Rebels' biggest overachievers.

But Stringfellow had a disappointing spring considering the expectations.

Stringfellow passes the eye test -- and then some.

He looks great on paper, too.

He's 6-foot-3, 225-pounds. He's a former four-star and top 100 recruit...

Channing Ward

In Ole Miss' media guide, the longest section and the most text on Ward's page seemingly falls under the header "high school" – not under "in 2012"... or 2013 or 2014.

There's a reason for that.

Ward was as highly praised a high school prospect as they come.

He was a five-star, the top prospect in the state and the nation's No. 4 overall defensive end, according to 247Sports.com.

The 6-foot-4, 279-pound senior hasn't exactly put up five-star production during his time in Oxford.

Over

Evan Engram

Ole Miss signed three tight ends in its 2013 signing class – yes, the class filled with elite recruits like Laremy Tunsil, Tony Conner, Laquon Treadwell and Robert Nkemdiche.

Of the three, Engram was tabbed by most as the one least likely to contribute right away.

According to 247Sports, he was a three-star prospect and the 81st-best recruit in Georgia.

Today, he probably belongs in the "elite" conversation alongside the Treadwells and Nkemdiches of the world.

Today, he's a preseason All-American.

Fadol Brown

As a freshman at FIU, Brown registered a modest eight tackles and 1.5 sacks in 10 games.

His decision to transfer to Ole Miss in 2013 -- where he sat out the entire season due to NCAA rules -- didn't exactly grab front-page headlines.

But in his debut season in Oxford last fall, the 6-foot-4, 280-pound defensive end finished top 10 on the team in tackles and started nine games.

Cody Core

The nation's former 1,666th best prospect and the 226 best wide receiver recruit is yet another example that recruiting rankings often mean little.

Core has emerged as a legitimate offensive threat and as the solid No. 2 wideout option Ole Miss so desperately needs...

Where are the 2014 Dandy Dozen players now? http://on.thec-l.com/1I89lLW  #Dandy12 via @CourtneyRCronin

QuoteFletcher Adams, DL, Brandon: The defensive tackle chose Mississippi State over Ole Miss and Florida.

In 2015: At 6-foot-2, 260 pounds, Adams is slightly undersized for a defensive tackle but athletic enough to play defensive end. He'll benefit from a redshirt year in Starkville.

Dontea Jones, WR, Louisville

In 2014: Jones was one of the first commitments for Mississippi State in 2015.

In 2015: His journey to Starkville will take a detour through North Carolina this fall. Jones is headed to Jireh Prep where he will begin his transition to tight end.

Armani "Ronnie" Linton, ATH, Walnut

In 2014: The two-way player flipped his commitment from Mississippi State to Ole Miss in June 2014.

In 2015: Ole Miss is loaded in its defensive backfield. Linton will redshirt this season.

Leo Lewis, LB, Brookhaven: He committed to Alabama and Ole Miss before flipping to Mississippi State on National Signing Day.

In 2015: MSU used a six player rotation at linebacker last year and should decrease to using four this fall. There's a slight chance Lewis could play...

Jamal Peters, DB, Bassfield

In 2014: Mississippi State's highest-rated 2015 signee...

In 2015: Peters has a chance to make an immediate impact this fall with the Bulldogs depleted depth at safety. At 6-foot-2, 216 pounds, the Bassfield product has one of the biggest frames at safety on Mississippi State's roster (maybe ever).
