The Picks: Picking All-SEC teams especially hard this season: I always hang on to the printout of the media's ... http://bit.ly/1cvxt9Q

QuoteI always hang on to the printout of the media's preseason All-SEC team. Not because it is easy to make fun of picks that didn't pan out, but more as a historical document to show where our minds were back in July.

For example, running back Mike Davis of South Carolina wasn't on the first three teams and will likely be on the postseason first team. Players such as Dominique Easley of Florida had their seasons cut short by injuries.

Mike Evans of Texas A&M was a second-teamer in the preseason, but anyone who doesn't have him on the first team hasn't watched any football this season.

Florida's Loucheiz Purifoy was a first-team selection in the preseason, but he's had an inconsistent year.

The really interesting (OK, it's only interesting to me and only because it's Week 12 and I've run out of things to write about) position is tight end where the SEC has kind of a void. Hunter Henry of Arkansas has 21 catches to lead all tight ends...

The Fence: Top ranked in-state players that did not land at Bama for their 2011 and 2012 championship seasons

In 2008, Bama wrapped up in-state 5-stars Julio Jones (NFL) and Burton Scott (bust).

5.9-rated Spain Park LB William Green made it to Florida and was not selected in the NFL draft after the 2011 season. He was rated ahead of Courtney Upshaw who did alright at Bama.

5.9-rated OT Antoine McClain starred at Clemson and is an OG for the Bills.

In 2009, Bama wrapped up in-state 5-stars DJ Fluker, Dre Kirkpatrick, and Nico Johnson.  Kirkpatrick was in the NFL and missed the 2012 championship season having earned a ring following the 2011 season.

Bama signed the rest of the Top 250 in-state recruits including Mobile QB AJ McCarron.

In 2010, Bama retained in-state 5-star Demarcus "Dee" Milliner.

CJ Mosley was a highly rated in-state prospect as was Jarrick Williams who got his first start on the 2013 team.

Each 5.8-rated, Bessemer 4-star DE LaDarius Owens, Opelika APB Corey Grant, who signed with Bama, and DE Craig Sanders will play in the 2013 Iron Bowl for Auburn.

Springville WR Jeremy Richardson signed with Auburn but did not qualify.

In 2011, the state's top ranked player, Brent Calloway flipped from Auburn to Bama and eventually ran afoul of the law.

5.9-rated S Erique Florence landed at Auburn and now plays for Troy.

5.9 Vigor WR Marvin Shinn transferred from Bama to USA.

5.9 Spanish Fort C Reese Dismukes will start for Auburn in the Iron Bowl.

5.8-rated Leeds S Jonathan Rose signed with Auburn, landed at Nebraska.

5.8 Hoover WR Jaylon Denson has played sparingly for Auburn. Out for 2013, knee.

5.8 Mobile WR Danny Woodson, Jr. signed with Bama, did not make it, and this month underwent heel surgery while playing for USA.

Looking ahead to 2012 and 2013, Hueytown QB Jameis Winston will be the first 5-star that got under the fence from Alabama.

The Fence Part Two: Top ranked in-state players that did not land at Bama from the 2012 class.

Jameis Winston, 5-star Hueytown QB would have likely played behind the game manager and been simulating Johnny Football and Nick Marshall for the scout team and handing off to Tenpenny.  He was joined at Florida State by 6.0-rated Mobile DE Chris Casher who had six solo tackles against Bethune-Cookman and 5.8-rated Prattville DT Justin Shanks.

5-star Daphne RB TJ Yeldon has performed up to expectations.

6.0-rated Bob Jones LB Reggie Ragland has been a reserve. He got notice for blasting Bama fans who were threatening PK Cade Foster after the Auburn loss.

5.9 Daphne LB Ryan Anderson was redshirted and recorded a couple of tackles in the Arkansas game (2013) as a career highlight.

5.8 Thomasville LB Tyler Hayes signed with Bama and was subsequently arrested for second-degree robbery.

5.8 Prattville QB Justin Thomas is a reserve QB for GaTech.

5.8 Birmingham Woodlawn LB Cassanova McKinzy was the lone Auburn in-state signee in the Top 250.  He had one solo and two assisted tackles against Bama.

NEW ORLEANS -- Don't ask Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron about the star system for high school recruits.

He doesn't like it. Alabama's winningest quarterback also dislikes the celebrity status afforded teenagers in the recruiting process, and he implied that talent evaluators lack the expertise to properly judge high school players.

(McCarron video at link)

Quote"Everybody's telling them how great they are," McCarron said Sunday during an interview session at the Sugar Bowl, "and then they come into college and it's a whole new ball game."

In an unrelated note, a service with high Bama membership just retroactively dropped McCarron to three-star.

Frustrated at first, Alabama RB Derrick Henry making moves in weeks entering Sugar Bowl http://ow.ly/s91hF

At 6-foot-3, 238 pounds, Derrick Henry was essentially unstoppable as a high school running back. The records and titles went on forever. So the assumption was he'd ease right in at Alabama a year after breaking the 51-year old national high school rushing record.

Only it's not that simple. Not at Alabama with that stable already in place.

A number of factors left Henry third on the depth chart this fall...

"A lot of uncertainly, sometimes, about what I'm supposed to do exactly," coach Nick Saban said. "When you go start back over when you have bowl practice, I think those guys relearn things and have a lot more confidence because it's like going through four or five days of camp. He's really played well."

The biggest problem came in the pass blocking game. Saban said he just never had to do that while running for 12,124 yards at Yulee High School in Florida.

Quarterback AJ McCarron barked at him in the season opener after missing a block that led to a sack.

"You have to learn pass protections," McCarron said Sunday. "When I change it, you have to be able to know what I changed it to and know what you have. ... Even in this game it might be tough for him, so I'll just have to help him out like I've tried all season long."

Expectations were high when he arrived early to participate in spring practices. He was the Maxwell Football Club national high school player of the year and the highest rated recruit in Alabama's No. 1 signing class.

"I'm going to come here and carry on the legacy," Henry said on NSD...

Wonder if Henry was pursuing a transfer?

Bkhardicars

Now before I get bashed fro saying stars don't matter, I definitely believe it's easier to coach up a five star to greatness than a 2-3 star recuit. That being said, as I watched Duke push aTm around at the line of scrimmage last night, I went to the scout recruiting site and looked at their recruiting over the past few years.long story short, their roster was filled with two star recruits and average classes were 2.5 star ratings. I am aware they lost the game. Likewise, I didnt check it out, but I believe Mizzou has been behind us in recruiting as well. My take away? continuity in coaching both relative to turn over and consistency in the coaching of a "system" so to speak, can result in winning football. I believe there is hope for us. NOW, BB, go get you some men...preferably of the four and five star kind...

Looking back at the nine quarterbacks Nick Saban signed at Alabama http://ow.ly/t17bL

One per year is the norm for Alabama when signing quarterbacks.

With AJ McCarron earning the starting job as a sophomore and locking it down quickly, luring the top passers to Tuscaloosa became a challenge in recent years.

The addition of Jacob Coker from Florida State changes the dynamic of the upcoming battle to replace three-year starter McCarron.

Four of the first five QBs signed by Saban transferred before graduating. Having just three starters in seven seasons under Saban can make easier to look for playing time elsewhere.

2007 Nick Fanuzzi: transfer to Rice

2008 Star Jackson: transfer to GaState. Left after not winning starting job there.

2009 AJ McCarron: 2 National Titles in 3 seasons as a starter.

2010 Phillip Sims: Transfer to Virginia. Landed at Winston-Salem State.

2011 Blake Sims: Former RB was the Bama QB who had thrown a pass in FBS prior to 2014.

2011 Phillip Ely: Transfer to Toledo

2012 Alec Morris: Appeared in one game as RS-Fr

2013 Cooper Bateman: RS as Fr in 2013

2013 Parker McLeod: RS as Fr in 2013 and Scout team QB

2014 David Cornwell: Oklahoma QB plans to participate in Spring coming off a knee injury

Nick Saban keeps signing them, but AJ McCarron's no fan of all those 5-stars. (Kevin Scarbinsky) http://ow.ly/tbFYm

QuoteFunny thing about talent, though, as McCarron pointed out as he made the media rounds in New York during the run-up to Sunday's Super Bowl. Talented players want to play, and when they don't, they don't always respond in a positive way.

"That's the kind of thing that ticks me off about recruiting and when these kids come in and they're five-stars and they expect to play right off the bat," McCarron said in an interview with Jim Rome. "It's a little entitlement, and when they don't play off the bat, they get a little ticked off and they don't want to work."

That was an eye-opening observation from the only starting quarterback Alabama's known for the last three years. It was a suggestion that, as good a job as Saban and his staff have done in recruiting the best high school players, they haven't been quite as successful in de-recruiting them.

There's a difference, and it's not exclusive to Alabama. Coaches treat players one way when they recruit them, going to sometimes embarrassing lengths to show how much they want them, and those same coaches have to teach those same players how to be a part of something bigger than themselves when they arrive on campus.

McCarron offered a little more insight into Alabama's struggle last season to get all of its high-profile recruits to buy into the system.

"We had a lot of young guys," McCarron said. "In the end, success was our killer. Too much success and a lot of young guys coming in who didn't know what it took to get back to that point to win. They thought we'd just show up and we'd win."

McCarron has been on a roll.

From last night: Too much of a good thing? Recruiting experts respond to AJ McCarron's 5-star 'entitlement' comments http://ow.ly/tgEXT

McCarron's storied Alabama career ended with two heartbreaking losses. His comments throughout the aftermath have suggested he was frustrated with a group of young players who didn't "buy in" and carried unwarranted "entitlement" because of their lofty high school recruiting rankings.

"In the end, success was our killer," McCarron, a four-star recruit out of St. Paul's in Mobile, said in a recent radio interview. "Too much success and a lot of young guys coming in who didn't know what it took to get back to that point to win. They thought we'd just show up and we'd win..."

"That wasn't five-star entitlement issues to cause that field goal to be returned. That's just something that happens in football," 247's JC Shurburtt said, referencing how Alabama lost in dramatic fashion at Auburn. "The Sugar Bowl, you want to talk about five-star freshmen, Derrick Henry just about bailed AJ McCarron out of that game."

ESPN National Recruiting Director Tom Luginbill said there was some validity to McCarron's assertions but didn't single out the highest-rated recruits.
