Hugh Freeze will be announced as Arkansas State's new head coach at a press conference at 6:30 p.m. ET, a source told ESPN on Thursday. Freeze, who was the school's offensive coordinator this season, replaces Steve Roberts, who was fired after the team went 4-8 this season. Arkansas State is a member of the Sun Belt Conference. Under Freeze, the team's offense went from 95th nationally in total offense and 90th in scoring prior to his arrival to 43rd and 46th this season. Before coming to ASU, Breeze had been the head coach at Lambuth (Tenn.) College and an assistant at Ole Miss. Prior to his time at Ole Miss, he was a successful high school coach in Memphis, where he coached Michael Oher, whose story was later told in the book and movie "The Blindside." – ESPN

Good luck to Hugh if he can raid the Delta small schools and Memphis he can do alright.  I hope he has got Hinds County Community College on speed Dial.
If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.

Great pic of Freeze doing the Wolf Call in that article.
Little known fact, but prior to settling on Guantanamo, the Pentagon wanted to house terror suspects at War Memorial Stadium.  It was deemed to be cruel and unusual punishment and in violation of the Geneva Convention.

One of his former assistants is there I believe but you probably already knew that.

It is being reported that John Thompson is coming as the D-Coordinator.

Johnny knows those areas well.

Very good hire for ASU. He is very dynamic and has a good offensive mind.  He should be able to recruit Memphis well.

wrong, the delta doesn't have very much talent anymore. it hardly has very many people anymore. ASU is the worst job in the nation, and he still won't win.

It isn't the worst.

The big question is will Leigh Anne Tuohy be hired as his o line coach since he couldn't figure out how to coach Oher without her help.

cashmoneyman_04

They will never win the sun belt.  The first tier talent in Arkansas goes to U of A.  Second tier talent from Arkansas should go to ASU but they go to Ole miss.

Just FYI ASU has already won the Sun Belt conference championship in football. Yeah yeah co champs, but they were the ones that won the tie break and went to the bowl game.

The hatred from both fan bases of the other state school is rediculous.

i meant not win it again because Nutt will take the second tier talent from here.  I don't hate ASU but i don't root for them.

Hope it works out great for State. After living in Texas for awhile now, I truly appreciate being able to pull for all things Arkansas.

And whoever said ASU is the worst job around-North Texas disagrees.

cosmodrum

I understand that Hugh's brother, Mickey Freeze, has left the Revolution to coach WRs.

Go away, batin'

i don't hate ASU just like i don't hate the Chilean miners.

i'm apathetic to both their plights.

Please don't tell the people at Warren that.  Greg Childs doesn't realize that he is not very good.

Look...the Delta still has great athletes.  I can think of several current NFL players from the Delta of Arkansas.  They didn't all play for the Hogs but they are very good athletes.

The problem in the Delta is all of the good coaches have retired so the overall team play is not as good because of inferior coaching, but the athletes are still there and are getting into colleges.

Every board has their share of uninformed jerks.  ASU recruits mostly out of state because there isn't enough talent in the state to rely on heavily.  That said, Jon Bradley, Corey Williams, David Johnson, Tyrell Johnson and Oren O'Neal all were Arkansas players drafted to the NFL from ASU who came from Arkansas.

Jeff "hogfanintx" Anderson

Okay guess I will be the bad guy.  I don't care.  Most ASU alum are not ASU fans.  They are Razorback fans.  I never cared about ASU in basketball.football.baseball. or anything else they do.  I am not wishing ill will.  Just do not care.  They have never mattered really in anything.

I remember when a lot of my buddies became UALR fans when they had hell I don;t even know for sure was it MIke Newell?   They hated the hogs and UALR was this and that.   How long did that last.

ASU  step up and play.  Or don't expect hog fans to give a rip.  Before you ask why I posted or read this thread if I don't like it.  It's on hogville   that's why.  Not inian or red wolfville.
Let's make some waves.

i just don't see why this is even on this board.  This isn't an ASU board and I could care less about ASU.  They have no relevance in college football.

Honor and Integrity no longer exist in the world of college football.  It is only filled with liar's cheater's, and traitors.

They must have got him cheap. Who would want to coach there? Poor Roberts had to play those money games every year and got beat up. Even though he brought in big checks, the loses were counted against him. That is a very unhealthy situation.

ASU has a long history of playing just for money. In 1958, the Indians got on a bus for Gainesville, Fla and took a beating for $15000. They have been doing that ever since. It needs to stop and the people in Jonesboro should figure out a way to fund their program without the money games. Have a more realistic schedule and establish a winning tradition and perhaps more people will come to see them play. It is a great community with really nice people but there are just too many alumni that seem to think they ASU must compete and be just as important as the Razorbacks. It will never happen so there must be a reality check. I don't know if this Freeze fellow understands all of that history or not, but he needs to lead the way and redefine the objectives of the program.

Roberts was fired for ULL and WKU, not money games.  There is no excuse for losing to WKU at home, and not much excuse for losing to ULL.

Florida International had a more brutal schedule than ASU and won the conference and secured a bowl game.

The money games played were Louisville, Indiana, and Auburn.  Louisville and Indiana are not that tough....especially Indiana who was horrible.

Despite opinion on this board, winning a Sun Belt conference championship is far from impossible.  The competition is not that fierce.

VenturaHog

Freeze sure has milked that Oher angle for all its worth.

When I heard this on the radio today I thought they said the new ASU coach was Drew Brees. I thought Drew must really be taking a pay cut on this one.  :)

What a load of s*#t coming from people on this thread.  If you "don't care" then don't post or keep coming back.

Did Freese pull a Fulmer and back stab Coach Roberts like Fulmer did Johnny Majors and ended up with the head coaching job?

JaketheSnake

I would really like to see A State do well and hit Memphis hard.  Maybe compete with Nutt for recruits (seriously)

Probably. That guy has had more jobs around college football than just about anyone. Wasn't he the AD at UCA for a few days?

They hire their OC after a 4-8 season?
At their sparsely attended press conference, he did seem to have that goofy Houston Nuttish homespun clown act going for him.

He is one year OC brought in to improve a lackluster offense. You might want to look at offense ratings in that year and comparison of offensive production versus historic ASU production...or you can comment without any clue.

Yeah you were "just saying" because if you're talking about Tim Horton, then you are clueless.

Horton worked nine years at Appalachian State to begin his career. If that's not paying your dues, I don't know what is.

He also played his butt off for the Hogs for four years, and is one of the hardest working assistants in college football.

Given that, yeah, Freeze is a good guy and a good coach. He will use ASU as a stepping stone to the Memphis Tigers job, oh, in about 2013.

ASU should go back to 1-AA. UCA should move up to 1-A. If you look five years down the road, that makes sense.

And I doubt Southern Miss would be a shoe-in job for Freeze, even though he went there. He played junior college ball I think, but did not play at USM.
