Just two weeks ago, the SEC occupied four of the top five spots in the D1Baseball rankings. But if football and basketball are any indication, does this mean that there are bad tidings ahead in our sport for LSU? Or for Florida? Or for Vanderbilt? Look, we all know the SEC is all-powerful in the college sports landscape, but are we all being hoodwinked by these guys too? I mean our sport only has a maximum of 11.7 scholarships and that's it. That means the entire landscape of college baseball should be much more even than football, with its 25 schollys a year, or basketball with its 13 a year. There is a limited amount of talent that can be stockpiled in baseball. And besides, baseball is another one of those sports where if you have heart, hustle and a little something called baseball I.Q., any podunk team can beat a No. 1 ranked team.

In fact, didn't we see that this week when Lipscomb beat Vanderbilt, 3-1?

Danny Zardon, a pinch hitter who lost his starting job earlier this season, hit a walk-off single down the third base line, and top-ranked LSU beat No. 2 Texas A&M 4-3 on Thursday night at an electric Alex Box Stadium.

Gamecocks struggled across the board at various times on the way to a 32-25 mark, the team's worst record since 1996. After starting the season with a 17-3 record, USC stumbled to go 15-22 the rest of the way.

That included a 13-17 record in the SEC, the first losing conference season since 1997, former coach Ray Tanner's first season, as well as a 6-13 mark in road games, the first losing road record in seven seasons.

Florida is heading back to Omaha for the first time since 2012. The Gators clinched their ninth College World Series berth in school history and fourth in the last six years with an 11-4 win over Florida State before 5,772 at McKethan Stadium.

It was fitting that Poyner pitched five scoreless innings to finish off the game, considering he's one of the few links to UF's last CWS season. But once again, it was the power of freshman catcher/designated hitter JJ Schwarz that helped get the Gators there. Schwarz continued his postseason tear, going 3 for 4 with two home runs and three RBIs to spark the offense...
