My dad was in the USAF from 1966 to 1992, and started out as a Navigator on a C-141.  He was later moved into a C-130 where he spent the bulk of his career, but he Loved his time in the C-141 the most.  He was stationed at Scott AFB somewhere around 1977 to 1980. We were also stationed at Sembach AFB in '86, who knows maybe you all crossed paths at one point.

No kidding.  It is a small world, lol.  We were at Scott from '80-Dec '83, then headed to Europe.  Sembach, Ramstein, Landstuhl, etc. all part of that huge Kaiserslautern Mil Area ... amazingly big back in the '80s.  My son's were 10 and 11 to start our 5 years in Europe and that made for a great time for the family.

I mostly flew C-5s ... but did lots of air refueling training and evaluations in the C-141.  Many friends in the later non-flying years (ground jobs) were C-130 guys.  Airlift was a pretty tight group.

Cool!

My brother was stationed on the Coral Sea in the 80's and took part in the operation against Libya.  One of my good buddies from work was stationed on her during Vietnam and conducted operations against the north.  My brother was with her for the final de-commissioning cruise.

I still have a CV43 zippo lighter he bought for me from the ship's store.

Marine Corps. 76-79 LCPL spent most of my time in Okinawa. Always trying to drink myself from one end of BC street and Gate 2 to the other. Never did make it. Grandpa fought in WWI in the Army, Dad in Korea in the Army. My two sons are in Benning right now in boot camp 11B. My oldest went through the first 3 weeks before they discovered he had a fractured bone in his shoulder! Tougher than I am. They both are in the Guard, although my oldest wantw to go to regular Army, wants the Rangers. I don't know how this is going to effect that idea. My youngest wants to go to the U of A when he gets out of AIT and become a Marine Officer.

Proud to know sort of all you guys, and I want to say you guys that have fought in Iraq or Afghanistan I am proud of you and you Vietnam vets, Welcome Home. Oorah.

And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind.
