thats cool, i looked into getting out each time i was near my eaos but nothing ever panned out that would be as fun as what im doing now, not to mention i wouldve taken a pay cut. it would feel weird for me to get out. im afraid im institutionalized lol

I was institutionalized as well. Didn't take me long to get over that. Now I work in K-12 education, shees...

+1 to my fellow veterans (that took awhile, but it was worth it).

My wife plays in a local concert band that gives free concerts to mostly elderly people 4 times a year.  At their November concert, they always play a medley of the 5 songs for each branch of the military.  During the medley, they ask the veterans to stand while their particular song is being played, so everyone can recognize you.

At first, I was embarrassed to stand and be the "center" of attention.  After all, what did I do?  I was never part of any wars, I never held a gun in my hands.  All I really did was sit on a ship for 4 years.  Granted, we did steam into the Persian Gulf (I did 4 West Pac/PG cruises), and were the first on the scene in China when the spy plane went down in 2001.  That was pretty scary.  But I had never felt like my life was in danger during the entire time I was in, so I didn't want to stand up, because I didn't think I deserved the recognition.

I got to thinking about it, and realized that my life was in danger, even when I didn't realize it.  Every day I was on that ship, cruising the Persian Gulf, there were any number of things that could have happened.  What's more, I volunteered to put my life in danger.  I joined the Navy knowing that I might be called to put myself out there for my country.  I knew that there was a chance that I wouldn't make it back home alive.

I hear the words "you did your part" spoken all the time.  Those are true words.  I may not have been in any wars, like a lot of today's troops, but I did do my part.

I now stand proudly when the band plays "Anchors Aweigh" in their military medley.  I'm proud of my time in the service, and I'll never again be embarrassed to be called out for it.

Thanks to all the rest of you that did your part, and more, thank you to those who did their part, and could only come home in a casket.  My heart goes out to all the families that have lost loved ones because they were fighting for this wonderful country.

Spent most of my career deploying to various places in the middle east. At the time, deployments seemed a little long...but looking back, I really enjoyed them. You really make some close, lifelong friends when you deploy. The Last 3-4 years I enjoyed deployments in Ecuador and Curacao. People thank me all the time for my service, and I appreciate it...but in reality, the pleasure was all mine. God Bless the United States!

I am a Hog fan. I was long before my name was etched, twice, on the sidewalks on the Hill. I will be long after Sam Pittman and Eric Mussleman are coaches, and Hunter Yuracheck is AD. I am a Hog fan when we win, when we lose and when we don't play. I love hearing the UA band play the National Anthem on game day, but I sing along to the Alma Mater. Thanks for continuing to serve. I served on the U.S.S. Mount Whitney(LCC/JCC-20) back when it was stationed in Norfolk, Va. It has now moved to Gaeta, Italy. After there, I was stationed at NAVCOMTELSTRATCOMMU Oklahoma City, OK. I got out in 2006 and had various computer jobs until I decided to go back to college to pursue a degree in Nursing. I loved the TACAMO community here at Tinker, AFB. My wife and I decided it was time to settle down in one place, and we really love Oklahoma. :) :razorback:
