Nice recovery for Missouri red zone defense after Gators got to the 1. FG makes it 28-9.

Every time Florida brings a blitz, it gets burned. Similar to last week v Georgia. Two of three TDs by Mizzou have come on blitz calls by D.

It's turning into that 2013 type season with so many major injuries. No bueno.

 Tony Agolini‏ @tonyagolini

Just end the season already. Can’t have so many guys going into 2018 coming off ACLs.

Here's the gamer from @Dave_Matter: #Mizzou mauls Gators for third straight win, keeps bowl hopes alive

COLUMBIA, MO. • Any doubts about Missouri’s ability to push around a Southeastern Conference opponent like it did the last two weeks in nonconference play were put to rest Saturday.

Tigers raced out to a 22-point halftime lead over visiting Florida and by game’s end put together its most complete performance of the season, a 45-16 victory. In front of 49,154, the program's smallest home crowd for a conference game since 2005, it was the first win over a Power Five opponent in six tries for the Tigers (4-5, 1-4 SEC).

Known for elite defense, Florida now struggling with talent drop-off, youth

Quote
Florida has fielded a top-15 defense every year since 2008. That streak will end this season.

The Gators gave up 455 yards in their 45-16 loss to Missouri on Saturday, and Florida’s youth was exposed and exploited by the Tigers.

“Defensively, we couldn’t get any stops on the football field,” Florida interim coach Randy Shannon said in his postgame news conference. “They attacked our young guys in the secondary and threw a lot of deep passes on us.”

Last season, the Gators lost a trio starters in their secondary (Vernon Hargreaves III, Keanu Neal and Brian Poole) and replaced them with three more future NFL players (Marcus Maye, Teez Tabor and Quincy Wilson).

Florida didn’t have that luxury in 2017. Instead of turning to upperclassmen, Shannon has relied on a pair of freshmen, two true sophomores and senior Duke Dawson. Missouri quarterback Drew Lock picked them apart Saturday.

C.J. Henderson and Marco Wilson were huge recruits for the Gators and have the potential to become a dynamic cornerback duo, but right now their inexperience and inconsistencies are showing up.

Henderson was benched for Joseph Putu after giving up a touchdown pass in the second half.

“If we don’t feel like a guy is giving it his all, we’ve got to go to the next guy,” Shannon said.

Florida’s defensive drop-off isn’t just because of youth. The Gators have lost key seniors to season-ending injuries in defensive end Jordan Sherit and safeties Marcell Harris and Nick Washington.

Defensive end Antonneous Clayton and linebacker Jeremiah Moon were top signees in 2016 and should be starting in Florida’s front seven. They have combined for 4 tackles through eight games.

“We didn’t get a chance to hit Lock — not one time,” said Shannon, who was also missing defensive lineman Jachai Polite (injury) on Saturday. “Did not get pressure on him. Did not get a sack. That’s not like us.”

Shannon’s unit isn’t playing at the elite standard Florida fans are accustomed to, but it shouldn’t come as a shock given the personnel and roster turnover (13 defensive starters in two years).

Outside of Dawson and a couple of linemen, all of Will Muschamp’s players are gone and UF is now relying on players recruited by Shannon, former defensive coordinator Geoff Collins and former coach Jim McElwain.

If you subscribe to recruiting rankings, there’s a noticeable difference between Florida’s starters in 2017 and 2016.
