South Carolina 2016 Signing Day Recap

Muschamp: "This class is well ahead of my first one at Florida"

QuoteFirst, we'll throw it way back to December, when four-star quarterback Brandon McIlwain sent South Carolina fans into a frenzy by choosing the Gamecocks over the MLB Draft. This was arguably the Gamecocks' biggest pickup.

Muschamp's biggest get was four-star defensive tackle Stephon Taylor. The highly recruited Taylor is out of New Orleans and had nearly three dozen total offers.

Three-star wide receiver Randrecous Davis flipped his commitment from UGA...

Recapping South Carolina's national signing day http://es.pn/1PPBBI8

QuoteBiggest need heading into signing day: Receiver. The Gamecocks only had seven scholarship receivers on the roster heading into national signing day and their best player at the position in 2015, Pharoh Cooper, entered the NFL draft...

Carolina hauled in five receivers and two tight ends in their signing class, adding a heap of depth. One of those receivers, ESPN 300 prospect Bryan Edwards, enrolled in January, meaning he'll participate in spring football and will have a solid chance to contribute right away. Edwards, the No. 253 overall player in the nation, was a U.S. Army All-American who possesses good size (6-foot-3, 200 pounds) and speed (4.53-second 40-yard dash). Joining Edwards in the class are three-star receivers Korey Banks, Randrecous Davis, Chavis Dawkins and Kiel Pollard...

What USC must do to keep the top football talent at home http://scne.ws/KdPF35

QuoteINDIANAPOLIS

Stuck out on Hwy. 701, not quite in North Carolina and not exactly near the beach, Loris, S.C., is hard to find. It's one of the reasons nobody found Temarrick Hemingway.

At least nobody in FBS football found him. Hemingway spent most of last week not in Loris, but at Lucas Oil Stadium for the NFL Combine, which means professional talent evaluators judged him one of the 300 or so most intriguing prospects in the country.

Hemingway didn't play at South Carolina or at Clemson or at any other major college football program in the country, which simultaneously illustrates one of the most promising and most difficult things about South Carolina coach Will Muschamp's new job.

There are talented football players in the state of South Carolina, but a lot of them are hard to find.

"There's really a lot of unidentified talent in South Carolina that people don't really get to see," Hemingway said. "I know me growing up, I wasn't blessed with a lot of financial resources, so I couldn't go to the big-time camps. So, a lot of talent in South Carolina goes unnoticed because of that."

The state reminds Muschamp of another state he used to call home – Louisiana, where he was an LSU assistant coach from 2001-2004.

"I really liken the state of South Carolina to the state of Louisiana," he said. "There are pockets in our state that are very difficult to get to. A lot of guys go unnoticed because it's hard to get there. A lot of other schools aren't coming to those places."

The 24th-largest state in the country, based on population, the Palmetto State ranked second in NFL players produced per capita based on a study of 2014 rosters by USAFootball.com. (South Carolina produced one for every 84,089 residents, while Louisiana finished first with one for every 76,837 residents.)

...

Former South Carolina running back Brandon Wilds, a Blythewood native who also is at the Combine, can still remember the schedule gauntlet his Bengals faced in his high school career.

"Jadeveon Clowney, Stephon Gilmore, Gerald Dixon, all those guys were on the same team," Wilds said. "And then the next week we would go and play Gerald Dixon Jr. with Justin Worley and Cordarrelle Patterson."

"A lot of people talk about Florida or California, even some northern states, but as a whole in South Carolina, I know there are a lot of great players in South Carolina that are overlooked," Wilds said.

"They really like me and I'm their number one guy," Urich said.  "It means a lot.  I really like the coaching staff and getting to hang around them I had a great time.  It was more of a hanging out type of day. Building relationships."

South Carolina could land 2017 QB commit on Friday

QuoteJust hours after word of Jay Urich's looming college announcement, the three-star quarterback picked another offer.

Duke joined South Carolina, Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, South Dakota State and Southern Miss among the options for Urich, who will announce his decision Friday at 3:30 p.m..

Last January, Urich transferred to Wren High School (Piedmont, S.C.) from Blue Ridge, following a path similar to the one that Kelly Bryant took from Abbeville.

No. 28 dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2017 led Wren to a 7-5 record.

Productive recruiting week for Gamecocks

QuoteMuschamp landed two on Wednesday when defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt and linebacker Davonne Bowen hopped on board. On Saturday, receiver Shi Smith and linebacker Eldridge Thompson pulled the trigger within minutes of each other.

Smith, now the highest-rated prospect in South Carolina's class, is a four-star athlete from Union, S.C. He's rated the No. 2 overall in-state prospect and the No. 14 athlete in the country.

Arkansas, Baylor and Missouri have also been in contact with Thompson, but his other offers were from Middle Tennessee, South Dakota State, South Alabama and schools from Conference USA.

Like Wyatt, Thompson committed while on campus, shortly after picking up the offer.

With 17 commitments already on board, space is limited in South Carolina's 2017 signing class.

Though NCAA rules prohibit schools from signing more than 25 prospects in a class, South Carolina has eight remaining spots, assuming junior college placement Javon Kinlaw is still counted with the 2017 haul.

Seven prospects have committed to Will Muschamp during the month of June and the Gamecocks coaches may not be done.

QuoteChase Hayden, a 3-star from Collierville, Tenn., visited South Carolina last weekend and a decision could be on the horizon. The No. 31 ranked running back in the class of 2017 is also believed to be heavily considering Arkansas and Michigan.

The Crystal Ball predictions number Vols 8, SC 3, and Razorbacks 1.

Quote4-star CB Jamyest Williams committed to South Carolina on Saturday afternoon...

"It started with (Clemson defensive backs coach) Mike Reed and then over to (Georgia defensive coordinator) Mel Tucker, but then just the relationship with (Will) Muschamp and Robinson, dating back to Auburn — that's just what it was going to take to get it done," J.J. said. "Also, (Jamyest) just wanted to build his own legacy. He could have went to — let's get it straight — he could have went to any school that he wanted to.

"Nobody dropped Jamyest off their recruiting list. As far as it goes, South Carolina was the best choice for him and that was the choice he wanted to make. He wants to build his own legacy. He wanted to make his own name for himself, day one."

The decision "went down to the last few hours."

"Just him being from Athens, UGA being in his backyard, just knowing the relationship he had with Mel Tucker ... it was probably the hardest thing he probably had to do in his life, tell his hometown, his state school, that he's going to play football elsewhere," J.J. said.

"He liked coaches that he can relate to, somebody he feels like can be a father-figure, somebody that's not just going to pat him on the back when things go wrong," J.J. said. "He felt that with Coach T-Rob ... it was just all about the relationships, consistently."

Jamyest does not plan to enroll early at South Carolina.

Though he plans to take all five official visits, J.J. said his son's commitment to the Gamecocks is firm.

"We don't believe in committing and de-committing," J.J. said. "Those are just values we have within ourselves. He's still going to take his visits, let's make that be known. He's still going to take his five visits, but he is 100 percent (committed)."

QuoteWR OrTre Smith (6-4 212) of Wando, who at one time appeared destined to be a Clemson Tiger, announced Sunday night he instead will be a USC Gamecock and play for Will Muschamp.

Smith made his commitment announcement in Charleston as part of his birthday celebration.

Smith's mother is a former Clemson volleyball player and most of his family support the Tigers.

He becomes USC's 23rd commitment for the class and the third receiver, all with the last name of Smith.  He plans to enroll in January.
