Russia could essentially lock-down the airspace of Syria if Russia wanted to.

It should be remembered that Russia has 10 different Anti-Aircraft/Anti-Missile Defense Systems.

S-500
S-400 Triumf
S-350E Vityaz
S-300PMU-2
S-300V4 (modernized)
Buk M3
S-125 Neva
Tor-M2U
Pantsir-S1 and S2
9K35 Strela-10

Their S-500 and S-400 are considered to be the top 2 air defense systems in the world.

Their S-350E Vityaz is a new air defense system, and it can engage 12 to 16 targets simultaneously, including aircraft and ballistic missiles.  Command post can target up to 32 missiles on various targets at once.  It uses the 9M96E missile, and its claimed kill probability is 90% against aircraft and 70% against Harpoon missile.

According to a combat history part of the following video, their S-125 Neva did a F-16 shoot down in the Iraq and Kosovo War, and a F-117 Stealth Nighthawk shoot down in the Kosovo War.  Also according to a combat history part of the following video, their 9K35 Strela-10 did an A-10 Warthog shoot down in the Iraq and Kosovo War.

Russia knows that we are fighting ISIS in Syria, and that is a shared goal with Russia, so Russia doesn't want to totally lock down the Syrian airspace from us.  Russia did announce that they were going to strengthen their air defense capability after we sent in the Tomahawk Cruise Missiles, but I don't know what exactly Putin is doing to strengthen their capability.  Based on the above list of 10 systems, Putin has options.

One thing for certain is that Russia is not going to tolerate us doing another strike in Syria.  Based on the strongly worded statement last Monday and this past Friday, Russia is not going to play games.  They said last Monday that they will use force, and one media report stated that on Friday Russia used the words "grave consequences" if we do another strike in Syria.  The Don Trump Administration better be careful in regards to testing Putin.  He doesn't play around.

Trump ain't sneered. He will just sick Bernard Langer and Pete Maxwell on them.
"Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening – and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented." Arnold Palmer.

Putin ain't scared either.  The 7,000 nuclear warheads he has ensures that he is not scared.

Putin also has 4 different intercontinental ballistic missiles that can reach the U.S.

One of them can carry 6 warheads.
One of them can carry up to 6 warheads, and some sources report it can carry up to 10 warheads.
One of them can carry 10 warheads and up to 40 penetration aids/decoys.

The one that doesn't carry multiple warheads, carries a single 550 Kiloton yield warhead.  To put that 550 Kiloton in perspective, the MOAB we dropped the other day has a yield of 0.011 Kiloton.

Two of the 4 Russian ICBMs that can reach the U.S. can maneuver during flight.
