From @RabalaisAdv: Profound possibilities abound for #LSU, State in a revealing early season showdown

Quote"We have to," LSU coach Ed Orgeron said this week when asked if he is eager to see how his team responds to its greatest test so far. "We're playing in the SEC West. Might be the first time (facing a test this season), but it won't be the last."

It is at the intersection of contradiction and mystery where these two teams meet in their Southeastern Conference opener. Two victories apiece over outmatched opponents — LSU throttled BYU and Chattanooga, State walloped Charleston Southern and Louisiana Tech — really don't shed much light on who will win.

History says to go with the Tigers. The last quarter century of play between LSU and Mississippi State is one of domination on the Tigers' side, with the Bulldogs held to a very short leash as far as victories go. LSU is 23-2 against State since the SEC split into divisions in 1992, having lost by a combined total of six points.

But the past three years have found these two long-time rivals locked up in a clinch like two tiring boxers. State and Dak Prescott won 34-29 in Tiger Stadium in 2014, a lopsided game for the Bulldogs most of the night but one that had Brandon Harris winging a Hail Mary prayer into the end zone on the final play. The last two years saw LSU win 21-19 in Starkville and 23-20 in Baton Rouge again, the latter the Tigers' turn to dominate then panic as the Bulldogs scored two touchdowns sandwiched around an onside kick in the last five frenzied minutes.

State has some great pieces — controversial nose guard Jeffery Simmons has first-round talent but is rightly dogged by that video of him punching a woman — but LSU is the more talented team overall. Of course, as the Prescott-led victory showed three years ago, a great quarterback is always a potential equalizer if he's allowed time to operate, and the Bulldogs have a scary dual threat in Nick Fitzgerald, who led the SEC in total yards gained last season.

"Mississippi State is number one in SEC scoring offense," Orgeron said, "53 points a game. We have a challenge ahead of us."

So do the Bulldogs and Fitzgerald, who was stuffed inside a discarded popcorn box last year in Tiger Stadium by an LSU defense that allowed him to net just 1 yard per carry on 13 rushing attempts.

State had a better chance of running amok until Orgeron's announcement Monday that outside linebacker/hybrid rusher/quarterback's nightmare Arden Key has been cleared to play for the first time this season.

How important is Key to the defensive unit that is already Fortress LSU? Much more than just another brick in the wall.

Mississippi State's 30-point win is the largest for the Bulldogs over LSU - ever. The two schools have played 111 times since 1896.
