BATON ROUGE, La. -- Listen to Ed Orgeron speak for a few sentences, and it will become crystal clear where he's from. Everything about the man screams Louisiana, which is part of the reason fans crammed into a Baton Rouge barbecue restaurant Wednesday to watch Orgeron handle his first call-in show as LSU's interim football coach.

He literally speaks their language. When local attorney Kent DeJean started the Q&A portion of the show by asking Orgeron in Cajun French, "Comment ça va?" ("How are you?") Orgeron naturally knew to respond, "Ça va bien." ("It's going well.")

Nothing against Les Miles, whom Orgeron replaced Sunday. Miles was an extremely popular coach in his own right, but "Coach O" has something Miles could never have. His deep roots in this unique part of the world mean something special to the prideful people of South Louisiana.

Having one of their own leading the football program at the state's flagship university? It would be an understatement to say that's cause for excitement.

The list of regrets — lessons learned, he might call them — is long.

He probably wishes to have back a decision to attempt to convert a fourth-and-1, while leading 14-0 with 10 minutes left, in an eventual loss to Mississippi State in 2007. State stuffed the Rebels and then scored 17 unanswered points to win, a result that led Ole Miss administrators to fire Orgeron the next day.

He probably regrets treating all of his players and staff members as if they were Warren Sapp —

He probably shouldn't have banged a bass drum up and down the hallways while his assistant coaches were trying to work, shouldn't have meddled in position groups — like quarterback —

Orgeron has another regret, too, and it concerns the current head coach at Ole Miss, Hugh Freeze.

"I always thought Hugh was a tremendous coach," Orgeron said Monday. "I almost hired him as my offensive coordinator — probably should have."

The two are close enough to exchange text messages and calls. Heck, Freeze even called into question Ole Miss' firing of Orgeron.

"People are not patient," Freeze said. "I really think that we had recruited well under Ed here, and it was close to turning a corner."

Orgeron doesn't hide from his mistakes. His three Ole Miss teams compiled a 10-25 record. The Rebels won just three of 24 SEC games.

Jim McElwain and Ole Miss' Hugh Freeze are among those connected to the opening if the Longhorns miss out on their purported top target, Houston coach Tom Herman. Wolken also mentions Freeze as a possible fit at LSU if interim coach Ed Orgeron doesn't earn the permanent gig.

McElwain, whose Gators are 5-1 this season, has a 37-21 record in five seasons coaching at Florida and Colorado State. UF went 10-4 and won the SEC East during his first year in The Swamp.

Jeff Tedford, former Cal head coach

The guy that I've heard from several sources is the favorite is former Cal coach Jeff Tedford. The 54-year-old former Fresno State QB set a bunch of Bulldog records before moving onto the CFL. He was an assistant under Jim Sweeney at Fresno State before turning around a dismal Cal program that went from 1-10 the year before he arrived to winning 10 games in his third season.


Lane Kiffin, Alabama OC

Alabama OC Lane Kiffin, the former head coach at USC and Tennessee, is a former back-up QB at Fresno State and has done extremely well since going to Tuscaloosa. He's groomed impressive offenses in each of the past three seasons despite having to break in a new quarterback each year. He's learned under Nick Saban and has told me he'll do a better job of delegating and managing a program if and when he gets another shot.

I suspect if Alabama does go to the playoff again -- and that looks like a very strong possibility --


Ed Orgeron, LSU interim head coach

Ed Orgeron's odds just improved to land the LSU head coaching job full time after his Tigers thumped Ole Miss 38-21. Orgeron still probably needs to win at least three of the Tigers' four games left to have a good shot at getting the job permanently, and that's still an uphill climb with Alabama, Texas A&M, Florida and Arkansas

Miles has hired Trace Armstrong to an agency team that still includes longtime agent George Bass. Armstrong, who also represents coaches like Notre Dame's Brian Kelly, Ohio State's Urban Meyer and Houston's Tom Herman, will soon begin working for Athletes First. He previously worked for Creative Artists Agency, where he worked closely with the man known to be the sport's most successful agent, Jimmy Sexton.

"I just think we're talking about broader coverage, a nation to represent," Miles told Dellenger about the hiring of Armstrong. "I enjoy the fact we use guys to do similar things and different things."

According to Dellenger, Miles must at least attempt to find a new coaching job, which was a provision in his $9.6 million buyout clause from LSU.

Travis Haney named South Carolina offensive line coach Shawn Elliott, South Carolina co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon and Georgia tight ends coach Shane Beamer as potential candidates.

Local 10 News: Butch Davis is returning to South Florida to become head coach at Florida International University.

Davis will return to the city where he led the University of Miami from 1995-2000.

He will replace Ron Turner, who was fired after FIU started the season 0-4. The team is currently 3-7 under interim head coach Ron Cooper.

Davis has a close relationship with FIU athletic director Pete Garcia. The two served together with the Cleveland Browns, when Davis was head coach after his time at Miami.

FIU plays Miami in 2018 and 2019.

Panthers haven't had a winning season since 2011 under Mario Cristobal.
