Gus Malzahn statement about the SEC Network
« on: January 10, 2018, 06:05:27 am »

I thought this was pretty funny given all that has transpired.

It's the off season and I'll move this to the SEC board later, but I thought some of you would find this comment interesting considering how Malzahn and Sexton used Arkansas leverage to get Gus a big raise and Sexton a big commission. I can't even believe that Malzahn said this and what is to be gained by doing so? You got your raise Gus, just pipe down.

It isn't "All" about getting the coach fired, but he isn't completely wrong.  Glad he's still at Auburn though.

The SEC Network is all about Alabama football and Kentucky basketball.  It could be an entertaining and interesting channel if it gave equal time to each school.

They should also ask each school to produce documentaries about student life on the respective campuses within the respective communities.  I might watch some of that...

This pretty much. I was like everyone else pretty excited about the SEC network when it came about...could pretty much take it or leave it now. I see it as mainly an extension of service for the university of Alabama. Paul Finebaum show...while comedically entertaining at times, same thing. Mainly for Bama fans.

He seems to get pretty butt hurt about bad press and high expectations in general. I tend to agree with the OP in light of leveraging other schools in order to squeeze every penny possible....then to only cry and whine when some heat comes down for under performance.

These Godly salaries high end coaches and athletes get SHOULD come with some expectations. In my mind you canít have it both ways.

Sure am glad we have these SEC Network payouts, I just got $7m a year!!, I'm set for life!!

Hey, the SEC Network is all about trying to get coaches fired.

As far as the Network, the only reason it was ever going to be of value to me was being another platform for football games, basketball games and baseball games. Especially basketball and baseball which were very underserved.

I get to see numerous football and basketball games I wouldn't otherwise see because of the SEC Network.  I don't let the other stuff bother me.

I do find humorous the thought that we "dodged a bullet" by not hiring a coach who is 45-22 overall and 25-15 in SEC games in five years, with four top 25 and two top 10 finishes...including an SEC championship, another SEC West title, and a national championship game appearance.

He wanted to come to Arkansas so he wouldnít have as much pressure to win. Sounds like he thought he could come here and go on cruise control. At 5 - 6 Mil and a monster buyout we would have been in a horrible position when we needed to fire him in a few years. Thatís the bullet we dodged.

The only thing I was interested about the SECN was more games being on, especially baseball. The talk shows are just filler and on the same level of the Ellen show, IMO.

Morning Gus,  Just read what appears to be something you said.  I believe you are a very good coach and I stand by you most of the time.  What the hell is this.  Are you trying to get fired now that you you have a pay no matter contract.  Over here at Arkansas, we just fired a, I just hit the jackpot coaches.  Is that your plan?  He was worth more fired than working, at least, to himself.  Well, actually, he was worth more fired to the University too.

Anyway Gus, Why don't you just go to work and earn your pay and if you have any worries about getting fired, thats likely to go away.   Look at your OC for starters.  His game management is slightly above Bret's.  So maybe you could take him aside and maybe teach him what is necessary to coach the offense in the SEC.  Either that or fire his ass but it does appear you are against firing coaches so bust your ass to make him better.

Just do what got you to where you're at big boy.  Whining is usually beneath you.  Is that money got you so weighed down you just can't lift it.  If you cannot coach a complete season which includes Bowls,  see if you can talk Aubbie into refusing to go Bowling.  But back to coaching, spend the time after correcting the piss poor OC in recruiting depth.  Damn, you lose one great RB and the team goes to half what it was.  Hell, Saban loses one RB, that puts him down to just 5 or 6 great RBs on the team.

Point is, just shut up and go to work or find a way to get fired, same money either way.

Do you think people would watch if they talked about 4-8 last place in SEC West in Football? Watch a basketball team that's in 10 place in the SEC in basketball?

I think we did.  I never thought Gus would be a good fit here.  I understand the record is what it is and it is a good record. But what we were willing to give to get him was not worth it in my opinion.  I think he is an overrated coach and that Auburn is going to regret overpaying for him.  He is a better than average recruiter although it remains to be seen if he can do that outside of Auburn, and I think he is just a slightly better than average coach.

Thatís a fair point. But if you think about their target audience? Iím thinking their main target audience is the entire SEC states. Not just Tuscaloosa, Alabama. But maybe Iím off there.

I donít know...I guess Bama truly is usually the biggest story in the SEC football news wise so thatís what they have to talk about the most.

Poor, pity Gus. Yep, that's it. Never works to the benefit of anyone but the fans and others who just want to go "head hunting" when it comes to the coaches. Hasn't benefited any of the schools, many of whom are awash in cash like never before, and who then often spend some their largess on fat new contracts (many of whom are guaranteed) for some coaches who never perform up to even minimal standards. Yep, poor pitiful Gussie and all the others of his trade who labor and toil in darkness with no love or compensation for all they do. Yep, things are REALLY tough all over.  :'( :'( :'( :-[ :-[ :-[ :puke: :puke: :puke:

Noooo they can't do that! That has the possibility of destroying Hogville's classic line of questioning: "Why would a recruit choose [insert town/city]? That place is a dump. Why would they go there over Fayetteville?"

I mean... He's not wrong. SECN is unwatchable at times.

The total of all sports events and shows being broadcast across the networks and on cable have spread the cast of commentators so thin that almost any idiot who can speak into a microphone can get a job.  It makes most sports cast unwatchable and hard to listen to.  And that's before we even have a conversation about how much bias they now present...

What bias would that be, talking more about the teams that are winning titles and playing for titles than about teams going 4-8?

The SEC Network is good for one thing...watching games. Other than that it's nothing but replays of Alabama or Auburn games and all afternoon of Finebaum sucking at the teet of Saban.

What bias would that be, talking more about the teams that are winning titles and playing for titles than about teams going 4-8?

The SEC Network sounds like it means ALL the schools in the conference would  get equal  time.  I have no problem with them hyping Bama and Kentucky but if that is what the network has become, then rename it the Bama/Kentucky network and have truth in advertising.  Maybe part of the reason Bama and Kentucky remain so dominant is they have nonstop FREE advertising.  You would think the other conference schools would complain but that  SEC money is hard to turn down.

SEC network sounds like it would cover SEc schools, and it does. Without the SECN there would be less exposure for schools that CBS or ESPN do not want to carry. As for the talking heads, why anyone would sti and watch them is beyond me, and it is surely beyond recruits. Do you think kids are sitting down and watching Finebaum? No, they are at practice or a game or doing whatever else 17 yr olds do. They are not sitting down to watch Finebaum talk to Gladys from Dothan or listening to the Finebaum version of Gentle Ben.

The SEC Network is all about Alabama football and Kentucky basketball.  It could be an entertaining and interesting channel if it gave equal time to each school.

They should also ask each school to produce documentaries about student life on the respective campuses within the respective communities.  I might watch some of that...

Amen to this - it could really be a great support for all schools. The Paul FineBama show could be great if they'd promote all schools rather than being a Bama pep rally show.

Poor Gus knows he is going right back on the hot seat. This way when he continues to lose 3-4 games a year he and his cheerleaders can blame the SEC Network for why he is getting fired. But hey at least he scammed the Aubies out of tons of cash.
