Former Nutt whipping boy Bradley Sowell got a $10,000 signing bonus.

Per Hugh Kellenberger that is well above the league average and translates to about a dollar per false start at Ole Miss.

SEC football powerhouses not only fill positions with the top recruits, they stockpile beyond need making talent unavailable to the rest of the conference. No blame to them. That's their job. They never know for certain which one will emerge as the star.

Recent analysis of SEC recruiting from '07-'11 reveals a high number of four and five star athletes who never pan out. Beyond injuries, academic, and legal troubles, many transfer to D-II late in their careers after being effectively released.

The information does not seem to be available to SEC level football recruits at the level of basketball recruits. They need a nagivational guide to football recruiting rankings and a copy of "Don't Waste Your Life".

Top basketball recruits are more willing to relocate farther from home and more saavy to not land at a school with no starting slot available. Yet top football schools are recruiting deep at key positions and then the players are disappointed a couple of seasons later as they announce their transfer intentions. Even Bama QBs Star Jackson and Phillip Sims could not foresee their lack of playing time while signing up with the Crimson Tide. They do have rings as parting gifts.

There are high school players each season holding a golden ticket. A chance at playing a dangerous game that could provide you and your family substantial wealth. It may take a nontraditional program to sell the idea that top recruits will not only have a chance, you will have a golden opportunity to succeed if you do your part. You will get TV exposure, NFL level prep, and top notch competition. At the other place you might get that shot, but you might get passed by this 3-star or that 4-star.

Then show the long list of players who did.

Among Top WRs counting toward Team Rankings in 2008

Harry Adams  AUB  5.7

After football career stumbles, Auburn's Harry Adams setting records in track

QuoteAdams has already posted several record times this year, including a world-leading 20.10 seconds in the 200 in April and a then-world-record 6.55 in the 60 meters in January.

"If I hadn't made a commitment to track, I wouldn't be at this level right now," he said in an interview last week before leaving for Iowa. "I'm glad I did."

Auburn track coach Ralph Spry said there are more athletes like Adams out there and he'd like to train them. But doing so requires a relationship between the football and track programs that doesn't yet exist.

When coach Gene Chizik booted Adams from the football team in October 2010...

Bruce Feldman: Is it possible for seven of the top recruits in the Class of '13 to all come from one of the states of Georgia, Florida, and Alabama?

QuoteIn 2009, I charted the actual best of the best in football. I examined where all of the Pro Bowlers played high school football. A significantly high number, in fact, did come from the Southeast with a whopping 36 Pro Bowlers being from there. The most amazing part was that the state of Florida produced 16 Pro Bowlers by itself, just one less than the entire Midwest region had and 10 more than the entire Northeast yielded and the same as the whole West. (The Southwest had 12.) In truth, I'm not sure that means much more than what we already knew: The South, and Florida in particular, produces some great football players. Does it produces almost all of the best players? No, of course not.

Recruiting analysts, like the rest of us, tend to favor what they're most familiar with or see the most.

The biggest missing piece in the high school recruiting business is the guys who do the star system seldom have intangible insight into who these kids are: how sharp they are, how tough they are and how much they love football. The analysts rarely get to spend much time with or around the kid.

Top Strongside DE counting for SEC team rankings from '07
Ben Martin  Vols   6.1

Martin suffered repeated Achillies injuries at Tennessee. The five-star from LaSalle and Ohio's Gatorade Player of the Year sat out 2010 and had nine solo tackles in 2011 playing through constant treatment.

Playing for three head coaches, Martin also received his degree in three and a half years.

In the week before his final game against Kentucky:

"You hear the stories about the 12-year NFL veterans that you have to watch how many reps they get in practice because of what he's been through physically," defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox said. "That's what we do. Whatever we've got to do to get him to the game and get as many reps as we can, that's what we're going to do.

"He's done an awesome job, and he's fighting through a lot. Some weeks you watch him on Monday and Tuesday, you say there's no way he's playing. He just finds a way and he stays in it mentally and he's helping coach the other guys. When Saturday gets here we'll get what we can."

Auburn's Harry Adams has spent the last two years remaking himself back into a track athlete, shedding weight gained from football, changing his training routine, and remaking his mechanics to tap into the world-class speed he's always possessed.

QuoteRunning into a stiff headwind Friday at Drake Stadium, Adams finished in a virtual tie for first in the 100-meter finals, finishing in 10.274 seconds – two thousandths  away from his first national championship. The wind must've felt like a parachute was tied to his back, because just two days earlier Adams scorched the track with a time rarely seen in Auburn's history: His 9.96 led the preliminary field, broke the Auburn school record, and was only the second wind-legal, sub-10 second performance in the school's history.

"It's been a while since I've been running like this, so I'm happy to be competing at a national level," said Adams, who after the race kept revisiting with awe how close he came to a championship. "I just missed out by a little bit."

...

The scholarship offers came from a who's who of college football: LSU, Auburn, Miami, Florida, Rutgers, North Carolina and Arkansas. The reports on scouting websites only fueled the hype, branding Adams the "sunshine speedster" and declaring him to have "serious speed." Scout.com called Adams "one of the fastest people on the planet for his age group."

But Adams said he had been playing football "just for the fun of it." He said he chose Auburn because then-coach Tommy Tuberville, who recruited Adams to Auburn, pledged to allow him to run track in addition to football.

That arrangement didn't work out, though, and Adams's football career never got its footing. He spent two years on special teams and as a cornerback, making seven tackles and returning two kicks for 53 yards. In October 2010, new Tigers coach Gene Chizik dismissed him from the football team for undisclosed reasons. The news hardly made a blip after all the hype that was made on his way in.

So Adams visited Spry, who was aware of his reputation from high school. They discussed the possibility of him returning to track...

With Derrick Henry making the choice to reneg on his committment to UGa after his trip to Tuscaloosa, here is how the RB recruiting situation looks for Bama.

Yulee RB, Derrick Henry, 6-3, 440, 4.6, has Bama, UGa, and UT as leaders. He claims to have never played defense. One service ranks him as the number one athlete in the '13 class. His high school says that Saban is sort of recruiting him as a RB. Henry claims to only want to play TB.

Bama and UGA will go head to head with other RB targets, including Norcross TB Alvin Kamara, 5-10, 190, 5.8-rated.

Bama has a committment from yet another Georgian, Walton's Tyren Jones, 5-8, 185, 5.8-rated.

NLR's Altee Tenpenny, 5-11, 200, 4.4, 6.0-rated is also committed to Bama.

Bama's current depth chart lists Eddie Lacy, Jalston Fowler, Dee Hart, and TJ Yeldon.

Bama also has Georgian Blake Sims, 6-0, 180, 4.5, 5.8-rated, Gordo RB Ben Howell, 5-9, 200, and Ralph RB Nick Tinker on the roster.
