Sidell Corley LSU 6.0

Sidell Corley was redshirted his freshman season and saw action in only two games his redshirt freshman season ('08) at LSU.

His mother was shot and killed in her home and the Mobile native transferred to Troy in August 2009.  The NCAA allowed him to play the 2009 season. He was a backup.

In June 2010, Corley was diagnosed with a benign tumor on his pituary gland. He played the 2010 season recording 13 tackles in nine games.

In July 2011, Corley gave up football for medical reasons. Troy could not confirm if it was directly due to the tumor.

LSU fan assesses their 2007 recruiting class in hindsight.

QuoteDE
Nationally - Some big-time national guys such as Florida's Carlos Dunlap, Texas A&M's Von Miller, Ohio State's Cameron Heyward and Georgia Tech's Derrick Morgan panned out.  This class had some big busts too, including Sidell Corley and Ben Martin (Tennessee).  It also had some great stealls (sic) such as Jake Beguette (sic) (Arkansas) and Ryan Kerrigan (Purdue).

Lastly, it's tough to mention defensive ends in the Class of 2007 without mentioning Luther Davis.   Davis probably had the biggest ratio of recruiting drama to actual on-field production in history.

What if Crowell chose Alabama on Feb. 2, 2011?

QuoteAll eyes were on Crowell all the time in Athens. In Tuscaloosa, football players are gods. They are worshipped 365 days a year. Crowell would have been a main attraction. He wouldn't have been THE main attraction.

It's easy to say things would have been different for him if he made a different decision, and of course, Alabama also has had players with legal issues. You can't escape it in college athletics.

If you believe message board rumors, many believed Crowell's mother was wary of Georgia and its discipline problems.

In a story before national signing day, friend D.J. Jones said Crowell's family was very comprehensive with their decision.

"They have been straightforward with all the coaches and administrators on campuses and gotten all the answers they needed on everything pertaining to Isaiah," Jones said. "They have asked about what happens in discipline situations, in classroom situations, in on-the-field situations. They have known all along what this opportunity means, and they are trying to make sure absolutely everything has been considered. They have always known this was about more than football."

Alternate question: What if Crowell chose to manage his brand identity more like Knile Davis (without having to suffer the injury issues from an apparent calcium deficiency) and less like Crowell?

Highly touted RB prospect Derrick Henry says: 'Alabama is my leader'

QuoteHenry added during the interview [with 97.3] that the presence of other young, highly touted backs on college rosters like Alabama's T.J. Yeldon and Georgia's Keith Marshall won't factor into his decision.

"Football is competition and that's what I love," he said.

Rivals and 247Sports both consider him the No. 1 athlete prospect in the country. Scout.com rates Henry as a five-star prospect and the No. 5 running back in the nation.

Henry told 97.3 FM that it is "very important" to him to play running back, adding that although some scouting services list him as an athlete, all the recruiters he's talked to have told him he'll play running back.

Bruce Feldman on a number one prospect demanding scholarships for several high school teammates

QuoteThink about how many guys in a 25-man signing class often have minimal impact in their college careers. If you have 15 significant contributors (guys who end up as starters at some point) and one of them ends up as a three-time All-American and No. 1 overall draft pick, that's a very good class. If Nkemdiche's buddies prove to be nothing more than special teamers, but are decent character guys and not headaches, and he is that special, he's going to be worth it . . . to certain schools because of how much better he may be that what they may line up there at defensive end instead. The tricky part here is the sense of entitlement that you may be signing up for by green-lighting this move.

Coaches now have to spend time, as Urban Meyer used to say, 'de-recruiting' once a celebrated recruit arrives in the program. How much could that affect your lockerroom? A lot. I know a lot of coaches who cringe at what they thought of a kid and how they wooed him only to regret it just a year later. Be careful of what you wish for, right? Yet, those same coaches still often do the same thing the following year regardless of their experience. Only Swinney can decide on whether Nkemdiche's make-up and that of his buddies is worth this kind of roll of the dice. He has a better feel for the kid than we do.

The sublot here is also intriguing: There are numerous examples of schools sweetening deals to land touted prospects, whether that means trying to bring on board the recruit's teammate, his brother, a high school coach or even his girlfriend. Who does the initiating of those details is murky. Does the school offer those things up, or is it the recruit making the college jump through the hoops?

Alabama columnist Scarblog on a roll:

QuoteCoaches will pressure prospects to commit, telling them their spot in the upcoming recruiting class comes with an expiration date.

Coaches will promise a player that he'll get a chance to play his preferred position in college, and that chance may consist of taking snaps for the first week of fall camp before the player is made to understand that he's better suited to a different position. Never mind that the player might've had a better chance to play his preferred position at a different school.

Coaches will woo and coo and wine and dine prospects and whisper sweet nothings in their ears, persuade and cajole and convince them to sign a national letter of intent and then, after national signing day, leave for another school. Looking at you, Tee Martin.

Coaches will game the system by signing more players than they have available spots on the 85-man roster, figuring that attrition, injuries, grades, etc., will allow them to get down to 85 by the deadline.

You can't jet high school kids to Nike's glorified NFL Combine in the summer and Under Armour's all-star game in the winter -- the players serving as unpaid spokesmen for the two massive shoe companies - - and complain when they start acting like entrepreneurs.

I hope Nkemdiche gets what he wants, within the rules. Why? There's a good chance that, wherever he goes, he's going to make some coach, program and school an awful lot of money.

Top Strongside DE's counting for SEC team rankings from '07
Ben Martin Vols   6.1
Chris Strong Rebs 6.0
Sidell Corley LSU 6.0
Travian Robertson SC 5.9

Travian Robertson was a seventh round, 249th overall pick by the Falcons.

Strengths: Robertson is very good once he gets off the ball to immobilize offensive lineman and keep linebackers free. He is a leverage player who, though stiff, understands what it takes to get under a lineman and gain an advantage early. He is extremely strong and has surprisingly developed hand technique. His strength is obvious when he sheds linemen.

Weaknesses: Robertson is solely a hold-up lineman who does little else. He has a tough time getting in the backfield and reaching the ball carrier. He is slow off the snap and he doesn't create plays for himself. He is the type of player who could make a lot of money playing in the right scheme, but his statistical productivity likely will be extremely low at the next level.

Top Outside Linebackers counting for SEC team rankings from '08

Jerrell Harris  Bama  6.0
Ryan Baker      LSU  6.0  Tied for last spot Coaches 2nd Team All-SEC
William Green   UF  5.9
Lerentee McCray UF 5.9
Courtney Upshaw Bama 5.9 1st Team Coaches and AP All-SEC
Marcus Dowtin  UGa 5.9

Lerentee McCray has been through and seen a lot during his long Florida career.

The fifth-year senior linebacker/defensive end has seen the highs of winning a national championship and the lows of the school's first losing record in conference play since the 1980s.

As he prepares to suit up for his final season in Gainesville, McCray wants to be a major component in what he hopes is a revival for the program in 2012.

QuoteHe'll certainly get his chance, as he fills in for the injured and ever-popular Ronald Powell at the Buck position. Powell, who was the nation's top recruit two years ago, had his best spring as a Gator this year before suffering an ACL injury during the spring game that should keep him out for most of the fall. While McCray missed all of spring recovering from shoulder surgery, Florida's coaches didn't hesitate to name him as Powell's replacement.

McCray is basically a bona fide hybrid. He began his career as an outside linebacker, but has since moved back and forth between linebacker and defensive end. He even got some action at Buck last year when Powell went down...

The former U.S. Army All-American participant and ESPN 150 member made the 50-plus-mile journey from Dunnellon, Fla., to Gainesville with lofty expectations. Along with just about everyone in his hometown, McCray expected to immediately compete for a starting spot and certainly expected a healthy amount of playing time as a freshman. But things didn't exactly work out, as the 202-pound frosh played in just eight games, mostly on special teams, during the Gators' national championship run. He played in just three games in 2009, receiving a medical redshirt.

Even with frustration mounting, McCray took time to learn from veteran playmakers such as Brandon Spikes, Ryan Stamper and Jermaine Cunningham...

Dan Mullen continually professes a staff can properly rate and assess the productivity of a recruiting class.

Quote
"Nothing against Rivals and Scout and 247(sports), but we're not taking their evaluation," Mullen said Tuesday during his team's media day. "We're doing our own evaluation on these kids and whether it's your newspaper, whoever is evaluating them, we trust ours. We have our own five stars in our deal."

The 2009 class, which some of the internet recruiting services Mullen scoffs at had the Bulldogs incoming talent in the Top 25 nationally, currently has 13 members on this MSU team but it's the five National Football League draftees that have been the sell point nearly four years later.

Junior college transfers Pernell McPhee and Chris White along with 2012 NFL first round pick Fletcher Cox were part of the Bulldogs recruiting class and along with the likely future NFL picks of Johnthan Banks and Josh Boyd speak volumes to the eye for talent, especially in the state of Mississippi.

"There are kids who are very much overlooked in this state," Mullen said. "There are in a lot of places, but Mississippi seems like a big place for (overlooked talent) and we want to make sure we evaluate the kids in this state the right way and show that they can come here and represent their state."

A year later is UGa's "Dream Team" recruiting class as dreamy as imagined

QuoteRay Drew was asked an open-ended question: When was the last time he'd heard the term Dream Team?

There were five-star recruits, those who had heralded signings, with a watershed puppy-raising moment. But overall, the collective performance of the Dream Team has been kind of hazy. There have been immediate stars: Malc Mitchell was arguably the team's top receiver last year. Nose tackle John Jenkins was a key linchpin in a defense that became one of the nation's best.

Twenty-five players signed with Georgia on Feb. 3, 2011. (John Jenkins, a junior college transfer, signed three days later.) Two of those 26 players did not qualify academically, which is about normal. But five more ended up being gone from the program less than a year in: Most notable was Isaiah Crowell (Carver High), dismissed over the summer following his felony gun charge arrest. Chris Sanders, Nick Marshall and Sanford Seay were dismissed this past February, following a dorm room theft incident. And another, Quintavius Harrow (Carver High), left the team amid academic troubles.

"Statistics say that every year, I'd say out of every class, two people are going to get kicked out," S Corey Moore said. "But we're trying to say, forget statistics, and beat statistics. You guys stay as a group, hold yourselves accountable in everything you do."

The linked article details the status of the class members and their high school rating.

Once-heralded Gator defensive backs trying to regain swagger

Quote"I feel like I haven't lived up to expectations," said UF safety Matt Elam, the No. 2-rated safety in the country coming out of Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer High in 2010.

Elam and Cape Coral cornerback Jaylen Watkins, the No. 4-rated cornerback in the nation, and Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas cornerback Cody Riggs, the No. 11-rated cornerback, were part of the best recruiting class in the country in 2010.

Florida had the potential to have its most dominating defensive secondary ever.

The Gators kept stocking up talent in 2011. Heralded St. Thomas Aquinas corner Marcus Roberson, ranked No. 2 nationally; Miami Monsignor Pace safety Jabari Gorman, ranked 10th; and Pensacola Pine Forest CB Louchiez Purifoy, who was No. 11, all joined Florida's lineup. DeLand S De'ante "Pop" Saunders and Michigan CB Valdez Showers rounded out another strong crop of defensive backs.

UF did lose two of the top prospects from the 2010 class in DBs Josh Shaw (USC) and Jordan Haden (Toledo) to transfers, but the table was set for a pass defense that was supposed to be part of an impenetrable defensive force.

Florida allowed 24.3 points a game against SEC foes.

Florida ranked eighth in the 12-team conference in pass defense (185 yards per game).

Top WRs counting for SEC Team Rankings in '07

DeAngelo Benton   LSU  6.0

Auburn receiver DeAngelo Benton has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of an undisclosed team rule.

Benton testified in the robbery trial of former Auburn player Antonio Goodwin earlier this year, saying he bought synthetic marijuana, which was legal at the time.

Benton's name was mentioned in the hearing of alleged Auburn apartment shooter Desmonte Leonard. Benton allegedly argued with Leonard before the shooting, police said. But witnesses told police Benton was not involved in the fight that led to the shooting that resulted in three deaths June 9.

Deangelo Benton, from Bastrop, is a really good prospect at wide receiver.  The problem is that he has struggled to qualify academically.  He signed with LSU in 2007, but fell short of qualifying.  He spent a semester at Hargrave Military Academy, where he got so close to qualifying that he moved to Baton Rouge to be close to the team while taking a couple of correspondence courses to get him the rest of the way.  The problem is, it didn't work.  He didn't make it.  He won't be a part of the 2008 football team, but he has not given up.

According to The Advocate, Deangelo Benton is back in Bastrop, working with his old high school coach Brad Bradshaw, and both are committed to getting Benton qualified.

"I just think he's got a lot of negativity, that a lot of people didn't understand the whole situation," Bradshaw said. "He screwed up. I'm not totally taking up for him, but sometimes we need to know the whole situation. I told him to come back to Bastrop because there's not going to be any negative in my office. There's no pressure and nobody's pulling at him. I just want him to finish up what he started and go play college football."

It is becoming obvious now that Les Miles was put in a very difficult position by people associated with Rueben Randle, people uncomfortable with Randle competing with Deangelo Benton.  Reading between the lines, it is clear he was told, "You can't have both."  Les Miles thought about it and decided that while Randle and Benton were roughly equal on the field, Benton was an academic risk and that because the 3 year time clock until he's eligible for the NFL started 2 years ago, he was a risk to go to the NFL at any time.

Les Miles made the decision to cut Benton loose.

Tide's Dee Milliner named Walter Camp Foundation Defensive Player of the Week

QuoteA day after leading No. 8 Alabama (sic) to a 41-14 victory over No. 8 Michigan in the Cowboys Classic,

Milliner, a former star at Stanhope Elmore High School in Millbrook, intercepted one pass and returned it 35 yards to set up the Crimson Tide's third touchdown. He also had five tackles (three solo) and broke up four passes. Milliner helped the Tide defense hold Michigan and Heisman Trophy candidate Denard Robinson to only 269 total yards.
