...ex-UG receiver Mikey Henderson

https://twitter.com/Michael_Carvell/status/865712300317184005

QuoteFormer UGA wide receiver Mikey Henderson had a sexual relationship with a Parkview High student for more than two years while he was her teacher.

Henderson resigned from his job as a math teacher and assistant football coach at Parkview High School on Friday morning. Gwinnett County Public Schools Police and the district's human resources department have been investigating Henderson for an alleged inappropriate relationship with a student, the district said in a release.

Henderson was a wide receiver for the Bulldogs from 2004 to 2007 after playing football for Buford High.

...ex-UG basketball player Lamar Heard

https://twitter.com/Michael_Carvell/status/865654955654258691

QuoteATHENS — Lamar Heard, a captain on Georgia's 1983 Final Four men's basketball team, died Thursday evening. He was 55.

The cause of death was not immediately known. However, he had fallen ill suddenly earlier this month and had been hospitalized since in Atlanta.

Heard, a Cartersville native, was one of three captains on Georgia's 1982-83 team, the only one in school history to reach the national semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. He started all 34 games at forward and averaged 7.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. When he graduated, he left as the school's single-game, regular-season and career record holder for steals.

"Lamar was just a really good person," said former Georgia head coach Hugh Durham. "I remember how close Lamar was to his family, and I know they were really proud of him, not just because he played basketball at Georgia but because he was a solid individual."

Heard was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in the 10th round of the 1983 NBA Draft. He played professionally in Israel.

Heard had been residing in Atlanta.

...D Ford

https://twitter.com/aldotcomSports/status/870979082573533184

QuoteFord took down Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in the ninth game last season, he was tied for the NFL lead with 10 sacks. In the remainder of the regular season, though, the former Auburn standout didn't record another sack and made only seven tackles.

"It was just inconsistency," Ford told reporters this week. "There were high points and there were low points. The ultimate deal was that I just wasn't healthy. That's the ultimate goal heading into this year is just to be more consistent. You're going to tweak things and get better at things as you go, but the ultimate goal is to be healthy so you can execute those things."

"You look back at this time, you look back at what you were doing and you tweak your plan a little bit so you don't run into those brick walls," Ford said. "So I've pretty much answered that question as far as 'What do you do to be more consistent?' and I found that out."

https://twitter.com/aldotcomSports/status/874694120488435714

Quote...Yet his time on the Plains apparently defined his life enough for it to define his introduction as a contestant on Fox's recent revival of Love Connection.

"I played football at Auburn University, which is the best football school in the country, and I'm a true athlete," said Haley, one of three men vying for the affection of Lauren Walsh on the dating show's latest episode.  "I'm a die-hard sports fan. Personality-wise, I love a girl that lights up the room when she comes in."

Walsh lit up Haley's room.

"She had bae traits," Haley told host Andy Cohen.

Ultimately, Haley didn't see much playing time with his potential bae... Since she'd receive $10,000 if she placed the former member of Auburn's defensive secondary on her romantic secondary, she did.

...former MSU WR De'Runnya Wilson

Former Mississippi State star, Alabama Mr. Basketball De'Runnya Wilson arrested in Mississippi

QuoteWilson, 22, is charged with disorderly conduct, driving with a suspended license, no insurance and possession of marijuana in a vehicle -- all misdemeanors, according to the Oktibbeha County Sherriff's Office...

Wilson played wide receiver at Mississippi State from 2013-15, finishing his career with 133 receptions for 1,949 yards and 22 touchdowns. He left school early to enter the NFL draft, but went undrafted and later spent time on the Chicago Bears' practice squad.

The 6-foot-4 Wilson was a two-sport star at Birmingham's Wenonah High School, excelling particularly in basketball. He led the Dragons to three consecutive Class 5A state basketball championships and was named Mr. Basketball...

This is the third arrest in three years for Wilson, who was also arrested on a marijuana charge in Covington County, Alabama, in 2015 and in Starkville last September.

...Former Vanderbilt basketball standout Joe Ford

QuoteFormer Vanderbilt basketball star Joe Ford was found dead Thursday after a vehicle crash on Interstate 24 in Kentucky.

Ford, 64, had been missing from his home in Paducah, Ky., since Monday night.

Ford's body was recovered by McCracken Sheriff's Deputy Dwayne Pickett, who responded to a report of vehicle tracks leading from I-24 onto the grassy shoulder of the road near the Clarks River mile marker.

Ford's 2010 GMC Acadia was found on its side near the banks of the Clarks River. Ford was the only occupant.

Ford's crashed vehicle was not visible from the interstate.

Ford moved back to Mayfield, Ky., after he graduated from Vanderbilt. He had been employed at Northwestern Mutual Insurance and Financial Planning for several years.

In 1973-74, the F-Troop led Vanderbilt to the SEC championship and the NCAA tournament [which was a big deal as only one team per conference was admitted into the field of 25]. In the four seasons in which the F-Troop played, Vanderbilt posted a record of 74-33.

Along with Ford, Fosnes and Feher, who were in the same class, at one point the Commodores' other starters were Lee Fowler and Rod Freeman.

Former Nashville Banner sports editor Waxo Green tabbed the group the F-Troop.

Ford scored 1,193 points in his career. He was the team captain in his junior (1974-75) and senior (1975-76) seasons.

Ford was actually a four-year starter. He cracked the starting lineup in 1972-73, the first year the NCAA allowed freshmen to play.

QuoteCraig, who has previous coaching stints at Auburn, Florida State and South Alabama, is making $8.10 an hour in an agreement which ends June 30.

Don't feel bad for Craig. He is owed $575,000 in 2017 from LSU as a buyout after he was fired from his role as a receivers coach/recruiting coordinator by Tigers coach Ed Orgeron.

According to Noles 247, he is listed as an "Other Personal Services" employee, which is a position designated position for "accomplishing short-term or intermittent tasks."

Noles 247 states, "Typically, these OPS agreements are re-applied to the next fiscal year."

...Darius Miller, Kentucky native who played four years, chose BCG over Bruce Pearl

Quote6-foot-8, 235-pound forward, a second-round pick by the New Orleans Pelicans (then the Hornets) in the 2012 NBA Draft, was waived by the team after the 2014-15 season. However, he's come to terms on a contract with the Pelicans, per David Pick.

Since being let go by New Orleans, Miller had been playing professionally in Germany with Brose Bamberg. In June, the Maysville, Ky. native helped the squad capture a third-straight easyCredit BBL title in the top professional basketball league in Germany.

Last season, Miller won most valuable player honors in the BBL championship series.

With Kentucky, Miller was a part of back-to-back Final Four appearances, including a national championship in the 2011-12 season alongside Davis.

The Pelicans announced less than a week ago that another former Wildcat, James Young, is on their summer league roster. Young was a first-round pick by the Boston Celtics in the 2014 NBA Draft, but the team didn't pick up his fourth-year option for the 2017-18 season.

...Ole Miss three-sport star Eddie Crawford

https://twitter.com/Michael_Carvell/status/884251469926604800

QuoteOXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss and the State of Mississippi lost one of their greatest sports legends Sunday afternoon, July 9, 2017, with the death of Hall of Famer Edward S. (Eddie) Crawford III, who devoted 54 years of service to the University of Mississippi, including the final 11 years in a part-time role as Special Assistant to the Athletics Director.

Following a brief illness, Crawford, 82, passed away at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo.

Crawford, a native of Jackson, Tennessee, actually spent 58 years in Oxford, having been a star athlete for the Rebels and Ole Miss' last three-sport letterman, excelling in football, basketball and baseball from 1953 to 1956. He also participated in track for one season. Eddie's most important titles were husband, father, Pap and lovingly known as "Coach" by many. He is survived by his wife of 60 years...

"Eddie Crawford has given more than he received," said University of Mississippi Chancellor Emeritus Robert Khayat. "As an unofficial ambassador for Ole Miss for more than 60 years, he served our university in virtually every capacity. He and his beloved wife, Shirley, were always friends of students, representatives of the university at weddings, funerals and social events and at state and national sports events.

"Eddie was an outstanding student (Omicron Delta Kappa) at Ole Miss and the Crawford home was always a welcoming place for their friends and for friends of the university. Intangible contributions are difficult to measure, but Eddie's fingerprints are found across the life of the university and in the lives of our students. He will not be replaced, but he will be remembered and missed."

A member of four Halls of Fame, Crawford was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2012, the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1996, the Ole Miss Sports Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Jackson-Madison (Tenn.) County Hall of Fame in 1986. In 1990, Crawford was honored by the Ole Miss Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame with its Distinguished American Award.

Prior to his "official" retirement in 2004-05, Crawford was the senior associate athletics director the previous 12 years, after serving eight years as the associate athletics director for development and director of the Loyalty Foundation (now the Ole Miss Athletics Foundation). He also served as interim athletics director at Ole Miss from April to June of 1998.

After serving five years as associate director of the Foundation, Crawford was elevated to the position of director following the retirement of Billy Mustin in 1985, who had served as director since 1975. Crawford joined the athletics department in June of 1962 as head basketball coach, freshman football assistant coach and varsity scout. He was head basketball coach from 1962-63 to 1967-68, posting a 46-97 record. His football duties included coaching the offensive backfield and receivers before taking on full-time recruiting responsibilities in 1977. Following the 1979 season, Crawford joined Mustin in the Foundation.

As the starting left halfback, the "Rebel Clipper" helped lead Coach John Vaught's Rebels to back-to-back Southeastern Conference titles in 1954 and 1955. Crawford had a three-year career rushing average of 6.4 yards per carry and also averaged 31.0 yards per kickoff return, which remains a school record. A two-way player, he also played a vital role in the Rebels leading the SEC in total defense in 1954 and 1956.

Crawford still ranks in a tie for third among Ole Miss single-game scoring leaders with his 24-point performance against LSU in 1956 as he scored once by rushing, twice on pass receptions and once on an interception. Little did he know at the time, Crawford's four-TD performance in Baton Rouge would turn out to be a life-changing event. Apparently he was in the process of pursuing his future wife, Ole Miss head cheerleader Shirley Wagner, who had refused his previous attempts. Once his four TDs were in the record book, that all changed and they finally went on their first date. When they were finally married, it was a love affair which lasted 60 years.

Crawford was involved in numerous big plays on both sides of the ball during his Ole Miss career, but none bigger than his interception against TCU in the final minutes of the 1956 Cotton Bowl, which sealed the 14-13 win over the No. 5 ranked and Southwest Conference Champion Horned Frogs.

Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back

QuoteFifteen years after leading Woodside (Newport News, Va.) to its second consecutive state championship, Stefan Welsh is back to try and do it again; this time as the head basketball coach.

"It's a dream job for me," said Welsh, who officially became the Wolverines' head coach Tuesday morning. "It's home and I've got so many great memories from my playing days here. For me, being the head coach at Woodside is like what Kentucky means to Coach (John) Calipari, what Duke means to Coach (Mike) Krzyzewski, what Alabama means to Coach (Nick) Saban... I want to be here for the long haul."

Also, like the three coaching legends, Welsh, who played at Arkansas from 2006-10, said he wants to compete for titles and bring the Wolverines back to national prominence.

Welsh said "equally important" is building players that will be successful long after their playing days at Woodside.

Whatever happened to the PG who led Ole Miss to their first ever NCAA tournament appearance and first SEC basketball tournament championship?

Sean Tuohy played for his father Skeets at Isidore Newman in New Orleans. After the coach suffered a stroke, Tuohy's tuition was still paid but his family experienced hard times. Tuohy learned that the free or reduced lunch program did not extend to private schools.

Tuohy saw basketball as his education and his way out. His experience at Ole Miss while accomplished was miserable during Coach Bob Weltlich's reign of terror.

Today, Tuohy is part of the broadcast team for the Memphis Grizzlies and is a franchise owner for nearly 100 restaurants in the Yum! brands family. He also serves as as an assistant coach specializing in encouragement and life counseling at Briarcrest near Memphis. Tuohy has set up lunch accounts for needy student-athletes due to his personal experience that when you are focused on food your energy is drained from studies and athletic achievement.

Still the SEC's all-time leader in assists, Sean Tuohy's greatest assists have come during his life after basketball.

QuoteIt's possible Oher will be released.

Oher has been in concussion protocol since September. The eight-year veteran missed the final 13 games of the 2016 season and did not participate in voluntary OTAs or mandatory minicamp during the spring. He did meet with Panthers doctors in June.

Panthers may prefer to move on from the 31-year-old.

Either one might be a better option than Oher, who is better known for being the subject of the book and major motion picture The Blind Side [Evolution of a Game] than he is for his performance on the field.

Oher has three years remaining on his contract, and he's scheduled to cost the Panthers $5.5 million in 2017. The Panthers could save $3 million if they release Oher, according to Over The Cap.

The fact that Oher apparently isn't healthy might be the only reason he's still on the roster, as NFL teams cannot release injured players without a settlement. In addition to concerns over his health and declining ability, Oher was accused of assaulting an Uber driver in April.

It's possible Oher is playing a high-stakes game of chicken...

...Bubba Bean

https://twitter.com/KBTXCourtney/status/885661350940299267

QuoteBean led the team in rushing yards from his sophomore year on and racked up All-Conference honors in 1974 and 75.

"I met a lot of friends while I was here, a lot of people I talk to now and kinda still stay in contact with but A&M was probably the best selection I could have made," said Bean.

Bubba finished his career at A&M with 2,846 rushing yards, which still ranks in the top ten in school history. In 1976 he was drafted in the first round by the Atlanta Falcons.

But the NFL wasn't easy on Bean.

"When you would get dinged in the head, it was almost considered a right of passage. You had't played until that's happened," explained Bean.

Despite the injuries, Bubba owned a local construction company for years and still enjoys working.

"I still do a lot of remodel work. I do one or two houses a year when I feel like it, but that's my passion now," said Bean.

These days, Bubba also works for the City of Bryan as a Neighborhood and Youth outreach coordinator.

"The rewarding part for me is if you can just expose someone to something that gives them another alternative, another way out, or another option, that to me is worth it," explained Bean.

Bubba also says he spends more time with his family and has become a self proclaimed golf-aholic.

On July 22nd, 2017 Bubba is hosting his first youth football camp through the City of Bryan.

The camp is free to attend, but you have to register on the City of Bryan website. Bubba says the camp will teach both football and life skills.

Cecil Hurt‏ @CecilHurt 30m30 minutes ago

RIP to Vito "Babe" Parilli, Coach Bryant's standout QB at Kentucky. Here's a fine story about The Bear and The Babe: http://www.dailyindependent.com/sports/mark-maynard-parilli-the-bear-should-have-seven/article_421c13a4-d9be-11e6-bf89-a3d969b17796.html ...

QuoteBabe Parilli was warm and relaxed in his Denver home on Monday, watching with great interest the national championship football game between Alabama and Clemson.

"Best game I ever saw in the college playoffs," said the 87-year-old former University of Kentucky and NFL quarterback. "Watched it all the way to the end."

Parilli couldn't help but let his mind race back 66 years to Jan. 1, 1951, when UK shocked top-ranked Oklahoma 13-7 in the 17th annual Sugar Bowl.

Sooners are recognized as that year's national champion because the AP poll was released before the bowl games were played [though Bama has laid claim.]

Wildcats were 11-1 with only a 7-0 loss to Tennessee "in an ice storm, a tough day to play," says Parilli, standing between them and undefeated.

"I called all the plays," he said. "I used to play a game with him every day for three years on calling plays. We went over down-and-distance situations. We met every day during the school year."

Parilli said Bear  had him thinking like he wanted.

"I was brainwashed before I went in a game, every down and distance, I knew what to call," he said.

In the Sugar Bowl win over Oklahoma, the Wildcats led 13-0 at halftime. "Bear Bryant came to me sand said 'Don't throw the ball. We'll take care of them on defense.'''

The high-powered Sooners scored only once in the second half and Kentucky held on for what still rates as the program's biggest victory.

Parilli said the Kentucky defense "was the best I ever saw in college football."

Wildcats collected five shutouts...

Parilli threw between 25 to 30 passes a game in an era when most teams were running. "I can't remember getting sacked in college," he said.

Parilli said he only remembered being yelled at on the sideline by Bear one time.

"He said 'Parilli, don't you turn horse---- on me!'"

Kentucky was the SEC champion having won five of six games. Tennessee was 4-1 including that day in Knoxville when it defeated UK in eight-degree weather with four inches of snow on the ground.

"A terrible day to play," Parilli said.

Kentucky has played in three major bowls — once each in the Orange, Sugar and Cotton bowls — and Parilli started at quarterback in each game.

Parilli left UK having finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting in 1950, then third in 1951.

He went on to play 15 years of professional football, before becoming a coach. Parilli moved to Denver in the 1970s when he was hired as a Broncos assistant.

In 1950, Parilli threw 23 touchdown passes and the following year, when Kentucky beat TCU in the Cotton Bowl, Parilli threw 19 TDs.

From the time Parilli left UK until Tim Couch threw for 37 touchdowns in Hal Mumme's Air Raid in 1997, no Kentucky QB ever threw for more than 11 TDs (Rick Norton in 1965 and Bill Ransdell in 1984) in a season.

Former #Gator G Brett Nelson flourishing as coach at Marquette http://www.gatorsports.com/article/20170719/ARTICLES/170719936/1180

Marquette

Quote

Brett Nelson last donned a Florida uniform more than 14 years ago.

The former sharp-shooting combo guard, who finished his college career close to 40 percent in 3-point accuracy, has taken lessons learned in four years under former UF coach Billy Donovan into his college coaching career. Entering his fourth season as an assistant at Marquette, the 36-year-old Nelson was promoted as one of two associate head coaches at the Big East school last month.

"It's a special place," Nelson said. "It's a basketball school, great tradition and obviously a lot of people know the history. I didn't actually realize it until I got here. The resources we have here are incredible and then, obviously, I work with great people."

Marquette won a national title in 1977 under Al McGuire and reached the Final Four in 2003 behind former Miami Heat and current Chicago Bulls standout Dwyane Wade [beat Kentucky.]

"In college basketball, a lot of it is timing, a lot of it is who you know and that kind of stuff," Nelson said. "My main focus is to help Marquette be as good as it can, win as many games as it can, go to the tournament, make deep runs. I'm a big believer in if you do your job, do it the right way, obviously, if you handle your business the right way, you'll get opportunities."

In coaching circles, Nelson has earned a strong reputation for both his recruiting ability and basketball IQ. His Florida ties helped him break into coaching. Nelson began as a director of basketball operations in 2006 under former UF assistant Anthony Grant at VCU, then jumped to Marshall from 2007-10 to work under former UF assistant Donnie Jones. At Marshall, Nelson was instrumental in the recruitment and development of former Thundering Herd and current Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside

From 2010-11, Nelson worked under former UF assistant John Pelphrey at Arkansas. After Pelphrey was fired at Arkansas, Nelson spent two years at Drake and a year at Ball State before landing at his current job at Marquette.

"Everybody does things a little bit differently," Nelson said. "I've been lucky, obviously. Playing for coach Donovan, there's things that I was learning that I didn't realize when I was playing that I still use to this day."

..."Broadway" Joe Namath

https://twitter.com/aldotcomSports/status/887900364749631488

QuoteFor the 52nd anniversary of the edition, Sports Illustrated posted a video on Facebook on Wednesday in which Namath explained how his first appearance on the magazine's cover led offensive tackle Sherman Plunkett to hang one of football's most recognizable nicknames on Namath - "Broadway Joe."

"Broadway Joe" went on to have a lasting impact on the NFL, even though his career started with the Jets in the AFL. Namath's guarantee that New York would beat the NFL champion Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III and the Jets backing it up by winning the game helped legitimize the planned merger of the leagues after the NFL's Green Bay Packers had beaten the AFL's champ handily in the first two Super Bowls.

Namath was the MVP of the Jets' Super Bowl victory. He also had been the AFL Player of the Year for the 1968 season, a feat he repeated in 1969.

Namath was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985.

Fact Check: Suzy Kolber was never babysat by Ron Jaworski. He was a family friend.

When Joe Namath attempted to kiss Kolber on the sideline of televised game, he sought treatment for alcoholism.

...Cap'n Munnerlyn

https://twitter.com/aldotcomSports/status/888862515844788224

QuoteWhich inspirational story from Captain Munnerlyn's life would the youngsters gathered at Murphy High School for the Carolina Panthers cornerback's eighth annual youth football camp hear on Saturday?

Munnerlyn threw a combination at the kids "just to put a smile on their face. That's the takeaway I want to give the kids. I always keep smiling. If you want to get out of your situation and things are bad, just keep working hard and keeping pressing through and you can get through it."

He pointed out the visual evidence - that he doesn't look like the veteran of 124 NFL regular-season games.

"As you can see, I'm not the biggest guy in the world - 5-9, maybe 198 pounds," Munnerlyn told the youngsters. "It should let you know: If I can make it to the NFL, anyone can."

He also related to the youngsters how he'd always thought he'd get by in school on his athletic talent - until a college coach told him in the 11th grade that he wouldn't play football past high school with his grades.

Munnerlyn told the campers not to wait that long to learn the lesson of the importance of academics -

"Just to let them know that anything is possible, that I'm with them if they need any help and just to let them know that I love them," Munnerlyn said about his message to the youngsters. "I was in the same shoes that those guys are in one day, but now I'm going on my ninth season in the NFL and I'm truly blessed."

...Jerry Bird

Former University of Kentucky basketball star Jerry Bird dies at 83

QuoteJerry Bird was inducted into the University of Kentucky Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005 as a part of the hall of fame's charter class. His No. 22 jersey is retired in the Rupp Arena rafters, which is considered to be the ultimate individual honor for a Kentucky Wildcat.

Bird, a Kentucky men's basketball player from 1954 to 1956, helped Kentucky to two Southeastern Conference titles in 1954 and 1955 and was a member of the 1954 team that went 25-0 and was crowned national champions by the Helms Athletic Foundation.

Bird scored 713 career points and grabbed 589 career rebounds under legendary head coach Adolph Rupp. He averaged double figures in both his final two seasons at UK, including 16.2 points and 11.3 rebounds in 1955-56. He was tabbed an All-SEC Second Team member that year.

On March 17, 1956, against Iowa, Bird grabbed an NCAA Tournament school record 24 rebounds, a postseason mark that still stands today. When Bam Adebayo hauled in 18 boards against Northern Kentucky in UK's most recent NCAA Tournament run — 61 years to the day since Bird's historic game — Bird received a number of calls and texts from friends and family telling him that he still held the record, his son, Steve Bird, said.

Bird was drafted in 1956 by the Minneapolis Lakers. He played one season with the New York Knicks in 1959.

Bird and his three brothers — Calvin, Rodger and Billy — were all from Corbin and staples of the town. All three of Bird's brothers played football at UK, while Calvin and Rodger are both members of the UK Athletics Hall of Fame.

Following his basketball career at UK and in the NBA, Bird returned to Corbin and worked the majority of his life at American Greeting Card until he retired.

...Ex-UK football player David Jones

https://twitter.com/KentuckySports/status/890614540538224640

QuoteWCHS Eyewitness News: Former University of Kentucky football player was shot in the abdomen early Wednesday morning in his hometown of Red Jacket, W.Va.

Deputies said David Jones was shot around 1 a.m. according to WCHS. He was taken to the hospital but is expected to live.

Police have identified one suspect but have not made any arrests, WCHS reported.

Jones came to the University of Kentucky from Belfry High School in Pike County. He played for UK from 2005-08, mostly as a defensive back but also saw time at wide receiver and kick returner. Jones is entering his second season as the head football coach at Phelps High School in Pike County. Before that, Jones was an assistant coach at Belfry High School as well as the University of Pikeville.

Jones was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Baltimore Ravens in 2009 but his NFL career was cut short due in part to injuries.

...John Reaves

Former Florida and NFL quarterback John Reaves, who finished his college career as the NCAA's all-time leading passer has died. He was 67.

QuoteReaves was found dead at his home Tuesday, according to the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's Office. The cause of death is being investigated, the office said.

Reaves dealt with dependency for most of his 11-year career as an NFL journeyman, a run that began as a first-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1972. He also played for Cincinnati (1975-78), Minnesota (1979-80), Houston (1981) and Tampa Bay during the NFL strike in 1987. The Vikings put him in the Hazelden Clinic in 1980, and for the next two decades Reaves lived a life of sobriety while becoming the No. 2 all-time passing leader in the USFL and then coaching eight years in the Southeastern Conference at Florida (1990-94) and South Carolina (1995-97).

His college career was much more acclaimed.

Reaves threw for a school-record 342 yards and five touchdowns in his first game, breaking the mark of 1966 Heisman Trophy winner Steve Spurrier and setting the tone for his career. He left school as the NCAA's all-time leading passer, throwing for 7,581 yards and an SEC-record 54 touchdowns.

Reeves' most memorable moment came in the 1971 season finale against Miami, the game best known for the "Florida Flop."

With the Gators leading 45-8 late in the fourth quarter, Florida defenders laid down and let the Hurricanes score so quarterback Reaves could have the ball back and get the 15 yards he needed to break Jim Plunkett's NCAA passing record.

Miami coach Fran Curci refused to shake hands with Florida coach Doug Dickey after the game. Making matters worse, several Gators headed to the Orange Bowl's east end zone and jumped into a pool that housed Miami Dolphins mascot Flipper during NFL games.

Reaves was born in 1950 in Anniston, Alabama. His family moved to Tampa when he was a child and Reaves led T.R. Robinson High School to the Class 2A state championship game in 1967 and earned player of the year honors in the state.

...Ex-Georgia WR Mikey Henderson

"Mikey" Henderson has been indicted on three counts of sexual assault and one count of child molestation in connection with an admitted two-year sexual relationship with a female Parkview High School student.

Henderson told police he had a relationship with the girl beginning when she was a 16-year-old student in his geometry class. Henderson resigned from his position as a math and broadcasting teacher at Parkview after he was charged with sexual assault in May. The former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver was also an assistant coach for Parkview's football team.

QuoteHenderson asked the 16-year-old to send him photos of her breasts over Snapchat in February 2015, the indictment said. The student also performed oral sex on Henderson on school grounds on at least three occasions, according to the indictment.

Emails between Henderson and the student revealed that Henderson promised he would have sexual intercourse with the student after she graduated, a Gwinnett County police officer testified in a June hearing.

Henderson was released on bond in June, after multiple Parkview teachers and coaches came to a preliminary hearing intending to defend him.

Henderson is one of four Gwinnett County teachers charged with sexually assaulting students in May.

All four passed background checks before they were hired.

It's awesome that so many people have supported Lorenzen, who played at Kentucky from 2000-03.

...Dave South

Brent Zwerneman‏ @BrentZwerneman Aug 10

Dave South said he's last of SWC Exxon Ntwk announcers 'All others are either dead or gone (from biz)' http://www.chron.com/sports/aggies/article/Dave-South-to-retire-as-Aggies-radio-broadcaster-11744609.php ... @houstonchron

QuoteThe long, scenic walk of South, the iconic "Voice of the Aggies" since 1985, with Texas A&M athletics is wrapping up. He will retire from his Texas A&M football radio play-calling duties following the upcoming season.

South also will call his final A&M basketball season, but plans to continue with his A&M baseball play-by-play duties for the foreseeable future.

"I can still keep my hand in baseball, and I've never made a secret that baseball is my favorite sport," South said.

South said he and his wife, Leanne, intend to get more use out of their motor home during the fall and winter and travel the country.

"I've been holding this job down for someone else for the last 32 years," a smiling South said, adding he and Leanne intend to visit places like the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., and Mount Rushmore. If a Mount Rushmore existed of A&M broadcasters, South would cut the most prominent figure.

"I've seen more Aggie athletic events than anybody in the history of the school," said South, who's trim and fit in his early 70s. "If somebody does break that, by then I'll be dead and gone."

South, a Wichita Falls native whose voice is a part of A&M football lore, arrived in College Station 32 years ago after working in the football broadcast booth for the Southwest Conference radio network. He had been asked by then-A&M assistant athletic director Ralph Carpenter to fill in for a season at Kyle Field, and South jumped at the chance. South welcomes anyone referring to him as a "homer."

"I am a homer," he said. "I work for Texas A&M. I want the Aggies to win."

South said his all-time favorite player at A&M is the late Rodney Thomas, a former Groveton High star running back who died three years ago at 41 from a heart attack. Thomas also played for the Oilers, Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons in the NFL.

"He was a good person who died way too young," South said. "I never saw Rodney angry."

"Grant Teaff once told Dat, 'You and Mike Singletary are cut from the same cloth,'" South recalled of the former Baylor coach and former Baylor star linebacker.

Dave South said his favorite game was '99 Bonfire: I would be disappointed if God cared who won football games, but I think that day He did.

...Phillip Sims

Former Alabama quarterback Phillip Sims is preparing for his first season as a high school football coach.

QuoteSince Sims played for Alabama in 2011, his football journey has taken him to Virginia and Winston-Salem State in college and the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks and Saskatchewan Roughriders in the pros.

Now Sims is the head football coach at John Marshall High School in Richmond, Virginia. He took the job with the Justices in April. John Marshall has had four straight losing seasons and went 1-9 in 2016.

"They deserve a chance to be winners," Sims said when he became the JMHS coach. "It's a lot of these kids that haven't been on a winning football team other than (recreation leagues)."

Sims redshirted at Alabama in 2010, then completed 18-of-28 passes for 163 yards as AJ McCarron's backup on the Crimson Tide's 2011 BCS national-championship team.

Sims left Alabama for Virginia, where he played in 2012. But he left the Cavaliers after being declared academically ineligible. Sims finished his collegiate career at Winston-Salem State in 2014.

Sims was working as a counselor at Colonial Heights Middle School in Virginia when he was tabbed for the John Marshall job.
