Tennessee, hours after being turned down by Louisiana Tech's Mike White, have agreed on a deal to hire Southern Miss coach Donnie Tyndall, sources told ESPN on Monday night.

The deal was for five years at $8 million overall. But they were still negotiating Monday night because Tyndall wanted six years instead of five, a source with direct knowledge on the negotiations told ESPN.com senior writer Andy Katz.

You could argue that Kenneth Faried made Donnie Tyndall. You also could argue that Tyndall helped make Faried, finding a diamond in the Newark rough, then molding a team around the volume-rebounder that as a No. 13 seed shocked No. 4 seed Louisville in the 2011 NCAA Tournament.


Tyndall turned that triumph at his alma mater into a move up the coaching ladder. Now Tyndall, 43, is about to climb higher. At a 2 p.m. news conference Tuesday, Tyndall will be named Tennessee's head basketball coach.

After a successful six years at his alma mater, going 114-85 at Morehead State, Tyndall produced a 56-17 record in two seasons at Southern Miss. Tyndall knows the South. He was an assistant at Middle Tennessee and LSU before replacing Kyle Macy at Morehead after the Eagles had fallen to 4-23.

He's also a tireless worker who will sell his program. He's not Bruce Pearl, but Tyndall can appear as if he has just popped out of a toaster, and he won't back down from a fight.

A rebuilding job in Knoxville awaits. Cuonzo Martin didn't flee to California after three years because things are rosy on Rocky Top. Jordan McRae, Jarnell Stokes and Jeronne Maymon are all departing, either through graduation or, in Stokes' case, to the NBA draft.

Tyndall will make $1.6 million a year for six years.

New #Vols coach Donnie Tyndall's deal at UT: 6 years, $1.6 million per year. Buyout is $3 million if terminated before March 15, 2017.

In the just-released MOU, UT says it will pay Tyndall's $500,000 buyout to Southern Miss.

Tyndall's $1.6 million is made up of $245,000 annual base pay and $1,355,000 annual supplemental pay.

Tyndall will receive $50k bonus for SEC regular season champ (solo or shared) and $25k bonus for winning SEC tournament.

Tyndall's bonus for winning the NCAAt would be $250k; $150k for F4; $100k 4 E8. $75k for S16; and $50k for NCAAt appearance.

NCAAt bonuses for Cuonzo and Tyndall are the same, except Tyndall will receive 50k more if he wins the national championship.

Tyndall gets up to a $30,000 moving allowance. He should wrap his dishes in cash.

Tyndall's MOU outlines a $25k penalty for a single year APR less than 930 beginning w/ APR calculated for 2014-15 academic year.

Another penalty: $10k per game for every game Tyndall is suspended.

"It's a perfect fit for both Donnie and the University of Tennessee," said the great Wayne Martin, who became a friend of Tyndall when he was a junior point guard for MSU in 1992. "He galvanizes students and fans. He's not going to just sell UT basketball, but the entire university."

Selling is what former Volunteers coach Bruce Pearl did as well as anyone who's ever coached the game. And Martin, who's well acquainted with Pearl, doesn't hesitate to predict, "Donnie will be as great an ambassador as Pearl was."

But he also has facts to back up his opinions. It seems that when Tyndall was hired by his alma mater in 2006, the school was coming off a four-win season that had dropped season-ticket sales to 1,100.

"As soon as Donnie took care of a couple of priorities such as recruiting, he personally called every single one of those season-ticket holders," Martin said. "He thanked them for their support and asked them to please buy the tickets for at least one more year. That's the kind of coach Tennessee is getting."

Critics could argue that UT already had that coach in Pearl before he ran afoul of NCAA rules, then lied to the NCAA about the charges. Given Tyndall's own NCAA troubles while at Morehead for using a rogue booster to recruit, a booster the NCAA later charged "offered improper recruiting inducements to prospective student-athletes," one might wonder why UT didn't give Pearl a second chance rather turning to the 43-year-old Tyndall.

Yes, Pearl's lying and asking others to lie for him was worse than Tyndall admitting mistakes in judgment. But Tyndall's violations were worse, much worse, involving as many as 20 prospective recruits.

One day after the hiring Southern Mississippi's Tyndall, the Volunteers saw their incoming signing class shrink.

Signees Larry Austin and Jordan Cornish requested and were granted releases from their National Letter of Intent with Tennessee on Wednesday, and the two players now are looking for their next destination.

Cornish's mother confirmed her son, a 6-foot-6 swingman from New Orleans had been granted his release, shortly after Austin, the point guard from Illinois, received his, and a Tennessee spokesman confirmed to the Times Free Press later Tuesday afternoon that Tyndall had granted both releases.

VolQuest.com reported C.J. Turman, the 6-foot-9 forward from Georgia, intended to ask for his release. When reached by phone on Wednesday evening, Charlemagne Gibbons, Turman's coach at Morgan County, declined to comment on his player's decision and indicated they still needed to speak with Tennessee. Turman did not respond to a text message.

That leaves Phil Cofer, the athletic 6-foot-8 forward out of Georgia who's the son of a former Tennessee linebacker. He did not return a phone call from the Times Free Press.

John Brady finally weighs in on Tyndall. Tyndall thanks Brady for giving him his first opportunity to be a Division I coach with four seasons on Brady's staff in Baton Rouge.

Tyndall got the head-coaching position at St. Catharine College in Springfield, Ky., at 25.

He needed the help of Billy Donovan to land even that gig.

The current Florida coach was at Marshall after five years as an assistant at Kentucky, and he called Martha Layne Collins, the former governor of Kentucky and St. Catharine's president at the time, on Tyndall's behalf.

"Right place, right time," Tyndall recalled.

After a 30-5 season at St. Catharine, Tyndall got his break when Brady, just hired to replace Dale Brown at LSU, and Kermit Davis, a friend of Tyndall's and Middle Tennessee State's coach since 2002, visited him while recruiting one of his players.

"When I met him, I immediately liked him, and that's one great quality he has," Brady said. "If you're around Donnie Tyndall for any length of time, he's got a sincerity about him and he's got a great sense of humor. He's unassuming. He can laugh at himself. I just liked him.

"I watched him practice, his team, and I watched him coach it, and I liked his demeanor and the way he was with his players and how they responded to him."

A week after meeting him, Brady offered Tyndall a position on his staff with the Tigers.

"It was one of those things where as soon as you met someone, you connected with him and liked him and spent some more time with him and talked a lot of basketball," Brady said. "He wanted to coach at the Division I level and was looking for the right opportunity. We offered him one and he jumped on it.

"Now he's at Tennessee, and that's a heck of a rise, and that's the way it ought to be."
