Kentucky basketball has finalized its 2017-18 nonconference schedule

Eight of the Wildcats’ 13 opponents — Kansas, UCLA, Louisville, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Vermont, Troy and East Tennessee State — reached the NCAA Tournament last season

Quote
“We are going to have what could be the youngest team in the history of college basketball,” UK coach John Calipari said in a school-issued news release. Of his 11 scholarship players, three are sophomores and eight are freshmen. “We had to take that into account when building this year’s schedule. How do we prepare our guys to be at our best at the end of the season — which we’ve done nearly every year —"

Six home games – three each in November and December – and four road [sic] challenges anchor the Georgia Bulldogs’ 2017-18 non-conference schedule...

Bulldogs will open their campaign in the dramatically renovated Stegeman Coliseum on Friday, Nov. 10, by hosting Bryant...

The matchup with Bryant is the first of three home games to open the season. Georgia also will host USC-Upstate on Tuesday, Nov. 14 and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday, Nov. 19.

The Bulldogs will then play three games as part of the Wooden Legacy in California over the Thanksgiving break. Georgia is among the eight-team field which also includes Cal State Fullerton, DePaul, Harvard, Saint Joseph’s, Saint Mary’s, San Diego State and Washington State. Games will be played on Thursday, Nov. 23; Friday, Nov. 24; and Sunday, Nov. 26.

Georgia will then face Marquette in Milwaukee on Saturday, Dec. 2 before returning to Stegeman to host Winthrop on Tuesday, Dec. 5. The Bulldogs will venture to UMass on Saturday, Dec. 16, before wrapping up their pre-SEC slate with dates against Georgia Tech on Tuesday, Dec., 19 and Temple on Friday, Dec. 22.

Georgia’s remaining non-conference outing will be at Kansas State on Saturday, Jan. 27 as part of the Big 12/SEC Challenge.

Kentucky plays four Top 25 teams -- Kansas, Virginia Tech, UCLA, & Louisville -- before New Year's. Tall task for inexperienced roster.

Helpful to SEC teams' RPI -- doubly so for those who play UK twice.

NCAA Selection Committee to put greater emphasis on road wins - http://brockway.blogs.gatorsports.com/13723/ncaa-selection-committee-put-greater-emphasis-road-wins/

Quote
Team sheets will now be divided into home games against teams ranked in the RPI Top 30, neutral court games against teams ranked in the RPI Top 50 and road games against teams ranked in the RPI Top 75. Previously, team sheets only took into account games against RPI Top 50 teams, regardless of location.

Gators will play at least three non-conference games against teams that finished in the RPI Top 15 last season (Florida State, Cincinnati, Baylor) and could play up to five RPI Top 15 teams if they face Gonzaga in the second game of the PK80 Tournament and Duke in the third game in Portland. Clemson will be another RPI Top 100 opponent (75), while Stanford (105), New Hampshire (125) Loyala-Chicago (184) and Gardner-Webb (188) are RPI Top 200 teams.

Last season, Florida played its first 11 games away from campus (8 neutral court and 3 road games) due to the O’Connell Center’s renovation. In the regular season, the Gators went 10-3 in the non-conference schedule and 24-7 overall, helping UF land a four-seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Looking at UF's non-conf sked, Gators could play at least three RPI Top 15 teams and up to five if they face 'Zags, Duke in Portland.

RPIs of rest of UF non-conf sked -- Clemson (75), Stanford (105), New Hampshire (125), Gardner-Webb (184), Loyola-Chicago (188) ...

RPI Top 15 teams Gators will face for sure are FSU (15), Cincinnati (12) and Baylor (9)

How about this six-day stretch for Alabama in December? UCF (12/3), Rhode Island (12/6), at Arizona (12/9). That's how you build a resume.

Bulldogs added much-needed muscle to the 2018-19 non-conference schedule by adding mid-major power Dayton for a home-and-home series. The addition of the Flyers to the non-conference slate is a big step toward building a more respectable schedule as MSU basketball continues its long march back to respectability.

Commodores could face nine teams who advanced to postseason play last season.

7-18 Vanderbilt men’s basketball non-conference schedule has been set, and the Commodores, who played the number one strength of schedule in 2016-17, are at it again in 2017-18, with nine of their potential games against teams who played in the postseason a year ago.  Six possible opponents, USC, Rhode Island, Seton Hall, Virginia, Kansas State, and Middle Tennessee, all played in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, with NIT participant Belmont, 2017 NIT Champion TCU, and CollegeInsider.com Tournament team UNC Asheville also on the challenging slate.

The Commodores will play nine of their non-conference games in Memorial Gym, including games against Pac 12 member USC, Big 12 members Kansas State and TCU, and 2017 Conference USA champion Middle Tennessee.

Vanderbilt’s two true road games will come against Belmont at the Curb Center on November 13 and at Arizona State on December 17.

Commodores’ Thanksgiving tournament takes them to Brooklyn, N.Y., and the Barclays Center for the NIT Season Tip-Off, with potential games against Rhode Island, Seton Hall, or Virginia, all teams that advanced to the 2017 NCAA Tournament.  The bracket for the tournament in Brooklyn has not been released.  Home games against Austin Peay and UNC Asheville will also be a part of the NIT Season Tip-Off.

"We need one more game and we need that game on Dec. 19," Pearl said. "We are really trying to finish with that last one. It could be home, it could be on the road, it could be neutral. That's the date we need to play. It's where it fits in the schedule and we still, believe it or not, still have a few options."

Auburn has announced eight non-conference games, including four neutral site games, with three at the Charleston Classic and one against Middle Tennessee at the BJCC in Birmingham. There are also home games with UConn, UAB and George Mason and a road game at Dayton.

Pearl has been trying to schedule a Power 5 team, even for a road game, and that is still on the table for this last opening.

"Of course we have UConn and Dayton and the tournament (in Charleston), as far as our power conference teams," Pearl said. "Could this one be? It could be."

LSU basketball releases 2017 nonconference schedule

Quote
LSU has released its 2017 nonconference men’s basketball schedule, which is highlighted by a trip to the Maui Invitational.

The Will Wade Era officially tips off on Nov. 10 — also known as the night before the Arkansas football game — against Alcorn State at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

Tigers also have a Nov. 16 home game against Samford before making the trek to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational, where they are scheduled to play Michigan in the opening round and either Notre Dame or host Chaminade in the following game.

Once LSU returns from Maui, it gets six straight home games — Tennessee-Martin, North Carolina-Wilmington, Houston, Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston State and North Florida. The Tigers don’t play a true road game until they wrap up the nonconference schedule at Memphis on Dec. 28.

Based on last year’s results, the schedule should give Wade a chance to get his LSU tenure started on the right foot. Outside of the Maui Invitational, UNC-Wilmington is the only NCAA Tournament team on the slate.

SEC announces 2018 Men's Basketball schedule

Southeastern Conference unveiled its 126-game men's basketball schedule for the 2017-18 season on Thursday. Conference play tips off the weekend of December 30-31 and runs through Saturday, March 3.

Each SEC team plays the other 13 teams at least one time during league play. They will then play their three permanent opponents a second time and the remaining two games will be scheduled on a rotating basis. The fifth annual Big 12/SEC Challenge will take place on Saturday, January 27.

Kentucky (2), Missouri (4), Alabama (Eight), Florida (11), LSU (14), Arkansas (20), Texas A&M (27), Auburn (28) and Georgia (31) each have recruiting classes that rank among the top 31 of ESPN's RecruitingNation Class Rankings for 2017. Twenty-six of ESPN's 2015 Top 100 recruits signed with SEC schools, including 21 of the top 66 players.

Three SEC teams (Florida, Kentucky and South Carolina) advanced to the Elite Eight in 2017. South Carolina's appearance in the Final Four marked the fifth time in the last seven years that the SEC has had a team playing on the final weekend.

The SEC Tournament will be played west of the Mississippi River for the first time when the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo., hosts the event from March 7-11, 2018.

Kentucky basketball will play five nonconference games against Power 5 teams that made the NCAA Tournament last season — Kansas (Nov. 14 in Chicago), Virginia Tech (Dec. 16 at home), UCLA (Dec. 23 in New Orleans), Louisville (Dec. 29 at home) and West Virginia (Jan. 27 in Morgantown) —

Kentucky has zero returning starters and only 7 percent of last season’s points and 15 percent of its 2016-17 rebounds back. The top six scorers from last year’s Elite Eight squad —
are gone.

Coach Rick Pitino’s side does return its second- and third-leading scorers: senior guard Quentin Snider and junior forward Deng Adel. Senior forward Anas Mahmoud, junior forward Ray Spalding and sophomore forward V.J. King are also back.

Almost 50 percent of Louisville’s scoring output from last season returns.

Our (way-too-early) prediction

Kyle Tucker: Kentucky 77, Louisville 72

Joe Mussatto: Kentucky 71, Louisville 69

Louisville will sport the more veteran side, but history is working against the Cardinals in Rupp Arena —

Bob Huggins: Playing at West Virginia a ‘great opportunity’ for UK

Quote
“I think it’s a great opportunity for Cal to come to Morgantown,” Huggins said. “Why is it such a great opportunity for us? Why isn’t it a great opportunity for them?”

Kentucky will play West Virginia in Morgantown for the first time since 1970 and for only the third time in series history on Jan. 27 as part of the Big 12/SEC Challenge. Kentucky is 15-5 against West Virginia all-time and has hosted the Mountaineers 12 times, including a stint where West Virginia made regular trips to the UKIT between 1958 and 1965. Kentucky won the most recent matchup, 78-39, in a 2015 NCAA Tournament game in Cleveland.
