Are we using Patrick Beverly properly?

I am of the belief that we are misusing Patrick Beverly.  As impressed as I was with his 5 threes against Auburn, I was a little displeased that he was essentially camping out behind the three point line.  This season he has seemed to fade in and out of the action, and rarely have I seen him take control of a game.  As a reference, here are his stats from Team USA this past summer and his stats so far this season for the Hogs:

                      PPG     RPG     APG    Steals     FG%
Team USA:        13      5.3       3.2      3.4       54.4
2007-08 ark:     12.7    5.1       2.8      1.7       41.7

Keep in mind that the USA squad was a team full of allstars, while at Arkansas we are relying on him as the Man. The stat that stands out most to me is FG%.  This tells me he is playing more like a shooter than a slasher/scorer for us.

I don't know how we could get him more involved.  Even though its not his natural position, I wouldn't mind seeing him play point.  He would definitely have more of an impact than Welsh or Ervin.  I love Patrick, I think he's our best player, our best rebounder, easily the heart of our team...I just hope we use him in a way that allows him to meet his potential.

I think his play is weakened because he didn't really have that summer time rest that he'd normally get;  especially at the end of games, he's lacked the killer instinct and in execution this season.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

I think it is probably because he was playing to his strengths this summer.  There was no need for him to play outside of himself this summer, because they had the best of the best on that team.

I don't know about the summer time rest but he just doesn't seem to have the fire he had last season.
Maybe Pell has pulled him back to make him a better, more alert player.

He's just not the all out, balls to the wall player he was last year...

he also had a good pg this summer... just sayin

who was the PG?  i would like beverly to play a little point.  Or at least have the offense flow through him at times...like the Spurs do with Manu

HogFaninMemphis

i agree with yall.
For instance, today all he did was play at the 3-point line.
Go Hogs, Go Cardinals, and Go Grizzlies!

i think the lack of a true PG is hurting him.  early in the season, without a true PG, we were turning the ball over like crazy when we were trying to play the full court game.  as a result, pel had to slow down our offense and our pressing.  consequently patrick has less opportunity to use his athleticism and relentlessness to create steals, and he is limited in transition scoring.

Beverly is having a little of the sophomore slump, though he is still being productive. It could be a mental things in regards to his free throw struggles.  I actually would like to see him be more assertive and take more shots.  I thought we should have looked for him more in the Auburn game with the hot hand.  I like it that Weems is being assertive, even though I wish he wasn't so assertive from the three point line.  I would like to put some of Weems and Ervin's assertiveness on offense into Beverly.

I expected Washington to be more productive coming in to this year.  I thought that would be the key to us becoming a much better team.  He has been a contributor, but not to the point that I thought he would.

alaback

He had 12 rebounds, but we need his scoring punch.  We win easily if he gets his usual 16 to 18 that we thought he was capable of this season.  Fishback showed some serious love for Bev today.

Doesn't anyone think that Bev's inconsistency might have something to do with going thru a paternity suit?

I think 13 rebounds and 6 points is pretty good considering Beverley had a dislocated jaw. Halfway through the first half he had to go to the locker room to get it worked on. He came back and played despite what had to be a lot of pain, even hit a big three late in the game. We should know more about the injury tomorrow.

As I said in the original post, he is our best rebounder.   If any our big men had his intuition and aggressiveness, they would be averaging 12+ boards per game.

That being said, I want to see Beverly more involved in the offense.  Maybe allow him to run the pick and roll, and then drive off the pick.  Or have him operating the high post when we get faced with a zone.
