Altman is a better coach than many people on here give him credit for. You don't coah in D1 for nearly 20 years if you don't know what you are doing. He has turned the Creighton program around. He was offered the Illinois job before Bruce Webber when Self left for Kansas. He was also offered the Nebraska job. He is a pretty good coach. His style wouldn't really fit in with Beverley and Weems though.

I think now, to keep Beverley and Weems you gotta go with Anthony Grant.  Up-tempo is an absolute requirement if we are going with some mid-major n00b.

He can probably take a bigger stuff than me

Altman is a good coach. You really need to know all the details before jumping to conclusions. His starting point guard was injured and out most of the first half of this season, and last year Nate Funk had shoulder surge and didn't play. He has had teams that were supposed to go far and then injuries burst the bubble.  They always compete in big games, ususally play those better than the easier teams.  I think he has connections, including extended family, to the Omaha area so am not sure he would come to Arkansas anyway. Very popular in Omaha- the 16ooo plus seats in Qwest are always sold out. Lots of Jaybackers with money that really like the guy. One of his asst. coaches just left for another coaching job making me think he is not going anywhere.

THAT IS HORRIBLE!  THERE HAS GOT TO BE 20 COACHES OUT THERE BETTER THAN that!  Get that old man off the search...We need a Search Consulting firm really bad!  At least we would know someone actually crunched numbers and was efficient!  UA BOARD is SO cheap!  They've got to be stealing from us...

rbarber46

he could the best coach in the country but that doesn't mean he is going to sell any more tickets than Heath did .... why the **** is it so hard to pony up the money and get a real name coach who will fill up the gym every night

The MVC is not some weak-a** conference, like the Colonial Athletic Association, which Anthony Grant's team ran through this year, by the way. The Valley ranked sixth, ahead of some pretty solid conferences...
1   Southeastern  0.5820  0.5764 1 12
2   Atlantic Coast  0.5818  0.5743 2 12
3   Pacific-10  0.5701  0.5670 3 10
4   Big Ten  0.5693  0.5659 4 11
5   Big East  0.5593  0.5577 5 16
6   Missouri Valley  0.5585  0.5543 6 10
7   Big 12  0.5573  0.5525 7 12
8   Mountain West  0.5516  0.5443 8 9
9   Western Athletic  0.5244  0.5224 9 9
10   Atlantic 10  0.5144  0.5168 10 14
11   Conference USA  0.5097  0.5095 11 12
12   Horizon League  0.5039  0.5058 12 9
13   Colonial Athletic  0.5019  0.5051 13 12
14   West Coast  0.4948  0.5047 14 8
15   Mid-American  0.4932  0.4962 15 12
16   Big West  0.4850  0.4727 20 8
17   Patriot League  0.4820  0.4774 16 8
18   Ivy League  0.4810  0.4762 18 8
19   Southern  0.4769  0.4762 17 11
20   Sun Belt  0.4752  0.4739 19 13

well, that is the most encouraging stat so far...

I think you are really over doing it here.

I would believe this analogy.  Stan Heath could equate to a Kia while Altman could be a Hyundai

Why is Dana Altman a Hyundai? It's not like he's had some ragged .500 seasons mixed in with his 20-win seasons. He's consistently won games at Creighton. You really don't think he could win games at the U of Ar? He's at least a Jeep. :)
That 20 win season stretch is an overrated stat by today's standards anyway, because teams play so many games now days. What concerns most people is that Altman has put together this record in a midmajor conference and he failed miserably while he was at Kansas St., when he was at a big time conference. He only began to build a better record when he down graded to a mid major conference. So who is to say this guy is ready to step back up to the big time, and what's going to be the difference for him this time around? Sounds like an experiment to me, and if we are going to gamble, lets go for a younger up and comer that you can get cheaper where the reward is greater if it pans out.

if he is so great how come most of us didn't even know his name before this week?

Call Pitino. Offer him 2.5 and see what happens. Please don't settle for this guy. What is the matter with you people?

Do your homework, fu-man-soo. Altman has been offered jobs at Georgia, Illinois, Nebraska, and other BCS schools, but he's just been content at Creighton. It's close to his family -- he grew up in a small town in Nebraska. He's making close to $1 million per year right now. Creighton plays its games in a four-year old, state-of-the-art arena that seats 17,500, and Creighton averaged 16,000 per game this year. Believe me, he's had plenty of opportunities to move, he's just been waiting for the right opportunity.

And, based on what I've read here, I hope he doesn't get hired by Arkansas, because y'all fools wouldn't appreciate a good coach. Everybody here is so stupid, you want to hire the next Stan Heath -- a guy who's had success on a short-term basis after being an assistant at a big school. Didn't you learn your lesson after hiring Stan Heath following one year, albeit successful, at Kent State?
