Monday Morning Quarterback / Petrino Licking His Chops...
Last post by mindemon - Today at 12:57:08 pm
Here is a good article from sports illustrated about our game with Texas this year. I thought it was a great read.

It's not batting average plus slugging, it's on base percentage plus slugging

Quote from: Hatleyville454 on Today at 09:23:10 am2013 UCLA - .683 OPS (All Games), .685 OPS (Conference Only)

2017 Florida - .734 OPS, .787 OPS

2024 Arkansas - .849 OPS, .769 OPS

Once these teams entered conference play and faced better arms, UCLA continued to produce at about the same clip, Florida got pretty significantly better vs SEC pitching (surprising), and Arkansas regressed.

I've got our current OPS in conference at 0.654 (0.238+0.416)

Quote from: carolinahogger on Today at 08:51:27 amSomeone correct me if I am wrong.

I have always thought that assigning the 'full' dollar value to athletic scholarships was faulty reasoning because the space for the athletes is already there.  An analogy would be if the school were a big hotel which charges $500 per night these athletes are put into rooms which already exist and would not have been sold.  Is UA actually at full capacity?  They don't have room for an extra 85 full tuition paying students?  In other words, are these 85 football players displacing 85 students who would have paid full tuition?

To carry on with the hotel analogy, if there are vacant rooms and the hotel gives them away it doesn't cost the hotel $500 per room night.  Actual cost is much smaller, cleaning, comped breakfast, etc.  Actual cost in business terms is the variable cost associated with the room, not the fixed cost.

They're not displacing 85 students who otherwise would have been admitted, no. I think UA gives the athletic department a price break in that a scholarship athlete from California costs the AD the same as one from Little Rock. But there is an actual transfer of funds from the athletic department to the university for those costs. It should be noted that kids from certain states (those bordering Arkansas, plus Georgia and Illinois for some reason) get a break from full out-of-state tuition anyway based on their grades. I chose California for the example above because Cali kids don't get that tuition discount.

Friday forecast keeps looking better that night.  My guess is we play Friday and a DH starting at about 10am on Saturday.

Quote from: PorkRyan on Today at 12:43:18 pmThe last three NC's had average defense.

LSU 75th  Florida 46th
Ole Miss 93rd  OU 111th
Miss St 55th  Vandy 80th

Defense is overrated in baseball.  Offensive production will make up for average defense.  Great defense will not make up for bad offense.

Yes, prioritizing defense over offense is almost certainly a huge driver of DVH's inability to win it all. You don't need elite offense at every position but having anyone who is OPSing much below 750 is a huge problem no matter what they're giving you on defense or what position they're playing.

Quote from: ukchingy on Today at 12:07:00 pmWe're not worried about Cal, he recruits a bunch of great guys so his teams will always be good. If he had not moved he would have continued to be the same Cal that he was, this move is good for him and you guys. I honestly think he will be rejuvenated and he wasn't going to get that at Kentucky.
I think hiring Kenny Payne will change Cal more than anything
