How will the Shaka Smart hire impact Texas A&M's recruiting? They were on fire until now.

klp1

He will have to outbid the Aggies, if he wants to out recruit them ...$$$$$$$$

ADavisTheGOAT

I think he'll do a really good job at Texas. Better athletes in that area.
Razorbacks | Redskins | Pelicans | LA Tech

Tusks

sometimes it's a good and some times it's a schit

WorfHog

Texas recruiting isn't a focus for our BB team, so this hire might hurt A&M. Really though Smart is a good coach, but he's overhyped IMO. Texas would have been better off hiring Gregg Marshall. A second round exit makes him as good a coach this season as Mike Anderson.

This....The Aggies are using the same 3rd party recruiting tactics in basketball as they do in Football.  (no money trail) The same can also be said of:

Scott Drew ( Baylor)

Ben Howland (UCLA now Baylor)

Tim Floyd (USC now UTEP)

John Calipari (William Wesley Umass/Memphis now Kentucky)

There is enough talent in Texas I doubt it really affect A&M or Arkansas except the occasional recruit every 3 or 4 years. If Shaka Smart turns Texas into a recruiting power, which is likely, then we'll be competing for different recruits.

What about fit with playing styles? We are similar but not the same. Both some what model after Nolan. I think Mike more than Shaka.

Former Texas Longhorns associate head coach Rob Lanier will remain in Austin under new head coach Shaka Smart

QuoteLanier is the second assistant to reportedly join Smart's first staff, as multiple reports connected former South Carolina head coach Darrin Horn to Texas earlier on Monday.

The 46-year-old Lanier would provide key in-state recruiting ties for the Longhorns after serving under Barnes from 1999-2001 and again from 2011 under Barnes and the school mutually agreed to part ways following a disappointing 2014-15 season. Known to handle some late-game play calling for Texas under Barnes, Lanier would also provide some continuity to the staff and an understanding of the current roster.

Lmao. Someone recruits well because they are one of the largest Universities in the world, with an excellent track record for successful alumni, and are the only SEC school in one of the best athletic states in the country and incredible facilities, so we MUST be paying people. No doubt. Come on guy.  ::)

You seem to have us confused with that other school in Austin. Hyperbole much? "Always?"
So give me some specific examples here and I would of course need more than one or two to justify that "always" statement.  :-\

University of Texas is finally attempting to trademark "Havoc" for marketing and merchandising purposes. Less than 24 hours after Smart and Texas agreed to terms, the school registered the slogans "Horns HavocTM" and "House of HavocTM" with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

QuoteThe University of Texas is trying to play havoc with Virginia Commonwealth University's brand of basketball.

Texas could be hooked on its own horns if VCU fights to protect its established use of "Havoc" in marketing the Rams' basketball team and its frenetic style of play.

"With trademarks, the old mark wins in a fight," said John Farmer, a trademark law specialist at Leading-Edge Law Group in Henrico County.

VCU officials say the ownership of the "Havoc" trademark is clear. "It is my understanding that trademark rights come through use, not registration, which means that VCU owns the rights that have developed in its use of Havoc in connection with our athletics program," said Pamela D. Lepley, vice president for university relations at VCU.

Will Wade, hired Tuesday to succeed Smart as the Rams' head coach, already has made clear he intends to continue the team's "Havoc" style of play and market it across the United States.

"If you travel anywhere in the country and you say VCU basketball, I think the word associated with that would be Havoc," Wade said...

Shaka Smart already pushing pace, building relationships

QuoteThe Longhorns have only worked out as a team six times since Shaka Smart took over April 3, but sophomore point guard Isaiah Taylor already notices a big difference.

"From these past couple of workouts there has been a lot of energy in the gym, a lot of positive vibes, and I think that's what our team needs," Taylor said. "These last couple of weeks this coaching staff has given us a lot of confidence. That's what we were lacking last year."

Smart's teams at Virginia Commonwealth were known for their pace, and it appears that's exactly the style he and his staff are installing early in their time in Austin.

Taylor said practices are all about speed and energy, and the staff is more than willing to showcase what they preach.

"Sometimes they're more energetic than us," Taylor said. They're throwing balls all over the place. They're sprinting from drill to drill. Their energy helps us."

...For a player who was "50-50" on leaving the program for the 2015 NBA Draft just days ago, Taylor sounds bullish about Texas' new coaching staff.

Even with Shaka Smart, Texas can't take 'HAVOC' slogan from VCU

QuoteShaka Smart primarily made his reputation on three things in his six seasons at VCU: Reaching a Final Four in 2011, making five NCAA tournaments and branding his team's style of play as "HAVOC." VCU recruited a certain type of player and certain style of athlete, and that helped Smart turn the Rams into a Top 25 program.

But when Smart took the Texas job a month ago, I couldn't help but wonder what would become of HAVOC and who would take ownership of it -- or if it could/would be shared between Smart's old school and his new one. Initially, Texas flirted with the idea of bringing the motto/slogan to Austin.

But that won't be happening -- for legal reasons. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports UT has dropped its bid to move HAVOC to Austin, as it is VCU, not Smart, that owns the legal rights and trademark.

Texas has made 2017's Jarred Vanderbilt a major priority (also a UK target)

QuoteA number of schools are pursuing elite 2017 small forward Jarred Vanderbilt, but Texas currently stands out in the effort department.

Vanderbilt, ranked No. 4 in both the Top247 and the 247Sports Composite, told 247Sports at the Nike EYBL in Minneapolis that Shaka Smart has made him a major priority compared to the other schools recruiting him.

"Coach Smart is a great guy and a good coach and I like the system," said Vanderbilt.

6-9, 233-pounds from Bellaire (Texas) Victory Prep, Vanderbilt is a highly skilled lefty who is excels in the transition game as a playmaker and finisher.

Along with Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Arizona, Kansas State, Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, Oklahoma and Baylor were mentioned by Vanderbilt. All but Duke and Kentucky have offered.

The recruiting momentum continued for Texas A&M on Saturday as three-star power forward Robert Williams committed to the Aggies

Quotehe 6-foot-8 Williams is one of the most athletically-gifted forwards in the Class of 2016 and is a very solid pickup for Texas A&M.

During the spring, Williams ran with Houston Hoops and was one of the most productive players in the Nike EYBL when he saw the floor. The native of Vivian, Louisiana led the league at 3.6 blocked shots per game while also averaging 8.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest. Williams' numbers are impressive when you factor in that he was only averaging 17.5 minutes a game.

Williams joins four-star point guard J.J. Caldwell in the Texas A&M 2016 class and the Aggies are continuing to add quality pieces after a great 2015 recruiting haul.

Shaka Smart on how Longhorns' Red River Showdown victory over Sooners applies to his team http://d-news.co/TEM5u

Quote"What they did in Dallas against Oklahoma, there's not a better lesson out there for these guys," Smart said Tuesday at Big 12 media days. "Here's what I saw: a group of guys that decided winning this game is more important than any individual agenda that any of us have.

"That was not a coaching decision. That was not a schematic thing. That was a group of players. In order for us to win big games like they just won a big game, we're going to have to do the same thing."

After six years spent building Virginia Commonwealth into a basketball brand, Smart has spent the past six months trying to turn his basketball philosophy into a culture change at Texas.

"We're starting from scratch," Smart said.

He's gone to players' apartments and dorm rooms. Just as he did at VCU, he brought in a former Navy SEAL to put his players through three days of grueling training that had little to do with basketball.

Smart is still mining the 130 pages of hand-picked motivational quotes on his cracked first-generation iPad...

One-on-One: Billy Kennedy discusses Texas A&M's depth, in-state recruiting success + more | http://www.scout.com/college/basketball/story/1601758-one-one-texas-am-coach-billy-kennedy ...

QuoteLooking at your roster 14 of the 16 guys are out of Texas, what has been your key to recruiting the state so well?

Time. It's taken us time to develop a relationship with all four of those guys that got up on our campus, some of them as freshman, sophomore and juniors and now this last year their senior year. We developed relationships here at Texas A&M. If we get kids on campus then we should have a chance to get them because of our facilities and our academic reputation is as good as anybody's in the country.
