Some observations after 20 pages of information gathering:

If you are a 5-star or a 4-star DT who is ranked in the top 100 overall players and you land and stick with an SEC school, there is a good chance you are going to make money playing football.  There is a lesser chance you will run into legal trouble and a slim chance you will experience both.

Terrance Cody gets nine months of jail time in animal cruelty case: http://ow.ly/ZUbEH

QuoteFormer Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Terrence Cody was sentenced to nine months in a Baltimore County detention facility on Thursday, the Baltimore Sun and WBAL-TV reported.

On Nov. 16, a Baltimore County Circuit Court judge found the former Alabama All-American guilty of five counts of animal neglect and two misdemeanor drug charges and set a Jan. 5 date for his sentencing hearing. That hearing was postponed until Thursday because a required psychological evaluation of Cody had not been completed in January.

Cody faced the possibility of receiving two years in jail. Cody's girlfriend, Kourtney J. Kelley, 28, was sentenced in February to 60 days. She had been convicted of five counts of animal neglect.

Judge Judith found Cody guilty of five counts related to failing to provide care for the dog, illegal possession of an alligator and the two drug charges.

SEC QB Recruiting; Producing NFL QBs

Last season, no SEC quarterbacks were drafted after four were selected in 2014. One SEC draft pick at the position over a two-year stretch has only happened once before (2012-13) since the turn of the century. The league's simply not spitting out as many pro-ready prospects

QuoteNo matter how you slice it from analytics to eye-test, SEC quarterback play has fallen short of expectations — perhaps too lofty considering recent Heismans from Tim Tebow, Cam Newton and Johnny Manziel — over the last couple seasons. Mississippi State's Dak Prescott, an exception to the rule as one of the most decorated passers in league history, could be the only league signal caller selected in April's NFL Draft unless Brandon Allen (Arkansas) and Jake Coker (Alabama) are picked up late.

SEC's inconsistent play at quarterback certainly isn't due to a recruiting downgrade at the position. Since 2011, six cycles have produced 137 four- or five-star quarterbacks according to the 247Sports Composite and the SEC has signed 43 of them, the highest percentage of any Power 5 conference in our nation.

The next wave of SEC signal callers could certainly change national perception concerning the league's strength under center if these guys are as talented as recruiting rankings suggest. The SEC signed three of the top five pro-style passers in the 2016 cycle, highlighted by Shea Patterson and Jacob Eason — the only two five-stars in this class at the position. Add several other top-flight players on the dual-threat side and you're looking at future starters with star potential...

"There were two no-doubt quarterbacks in the class of 2016 nationally and they're both heading to the SEC," Barton Simmons said. "I'll be surprised if Eason isn't a three-year starter at Georgia and Patterson is the most starter-ready quarterback in the country.

"I also see guys like Jalen Hurts at Alabama, Micah Wilson at Missouri and Brandon McIlwain at South Carolina as low bust players while Feleipe Franks at Florida and Jarrett Guarantano at Tennessee have immense ceilings given a year or two to develop."

Alabama has had many impactful junior college transfers, but not all were success stories: http://ow.ly/10kwCe

QuoteAlabama, Saban said, only recruits junior college players that the coaching staff believes are talented enough to play immediately and help at a position of need:

Defensive lineman Terrence Cody (2008)
Cody was a Unanimous All-American each of his two years with Alabama.

Offensive lineman James Carpenter (2009)
Carpenter was Alabama's starting left tackle each of his two years with the Tide.
He was first-team All-SEC as a senior in 2010.

Defensive back Dequan Menzie (2010)
Menzie started seven games as a junior in 2010 and was the starting cornerback opposite Dre Kirkpatrick as a senior.

Defensive lineman Jesse Williams (2011)
Williams started each of his two years at Alabama.

Defensive lineman Quinton Dial (2011)
Dial was a valuable part of Alabama's defensive line rotation each of his two seasons with the Tide.

Offensive lineman Aaron Douglas (2011)
Douglas passed away in May 2011 prior to his first season with Alabama.

Wide receiver Duron Carter (2011)
Carter never played a down for the Tide.

Defensive back Travell Dixon (2012)
Dixon left the program in August 2012

Offensive lineman Leon Brown (2013)
Brown was Alabama's starting right guard as a senior in 2014.

Defensive lineman Jarran Reed (2014)
Reed was second-team All-SEC as a senior last season after receiving All-SEC honorable mention recognition as a junior.

Defensive lineman D.J. Pettway (2014)
Pettway began his college career at Alabama and returned after one season of junior college. He contributed as a reserve the last two seasons.

Offensive lineman Dominick Jackson (2014)
Jackson was Alabama's starting right tackle as a senior last season and was named second-team All-SEC.

Tight end Ty Flournoy-Smith (2014)
Flournoy-Smith was a reserve each of his two seasons with the Tide.

Defensive lineman Jonathan Taylor (2015)
Taylor was dismissed from the team last March

Offensive Tackle Charles Baldwin (2016)
TBD

Alabama, South Carolina and Ole Miss have the best collection of recruiters in the nation, according to 247Sports' director of recruiting Barton Simmons

QuoteLSU earned the No. 7 spot on the list, despite a shakeup on coach Les Miles' staff that included losing Frank Wilson, Kevin Steele and Austin Thomas. Simmons cited the addition of position coaches Dameyune Craig and Ed Orgeron for the reason the Tigers still have one of the NCAA's top 10 recruiting staffs.

South Carolina earning the second spot is a testament to the staff that Will Muschamp assembled during his first months on the job, including poaching several coaches from Auburn.

Bielema doesn't put up with recruits disrespecting women

Quote"I tell our coaches, 'Look out for social issues with women,'" Bielema said. "If he disrespects women at that time in his life, wait until he's on his own on campus, it's just a ticking time bomb. Maybe if a kid curses his mother or says something you shouldn't say in front of your mom, that's a red flag for us, 'Let's get out of this thing before it's too late.'

Bielema said he sometimes gets caught up with a recruit's talent or performance on tape. But he told Rome that another deal-breaker is a prospect's character.

To Bielema, one of the most important qualities of a person's character is how they treat women.

Will Jake Bentley's early enrollment at South Carolina start a trend? http://sec.news/22fD0u4

QuoteJake Bentley: On Wednesday, the Opelika, Ala.-based star athlete announced, via Twitter, he would forgo his final year of high-school eligibility to enroll at South Carolina and join the Gamecocks football program this summer.

Bentley's dad, Bobby Bentley, was recently hired as an assistant on Will Muschamp's staff with the Gamecocks (running backs coach), after previously serving under Gus Malzahn at Auburn (2014-15 seasons); and commendably, Jake Bentley wanted to be close to his family for the 2016-17 school year — minus the awkwardness of transferring to a Columbia, S.C.-based high school (for one semester, really).

Plus, he already had enough Opelika High credits to reclassify his status and graduate with the Class of 2016.

"It's been a long process getting approval from the SEC and the NCAA and South Carolina. It's been kind of a long deal, but we got confirmation about a week ago, and everything's good," Jake Bentley told The State...

Back in 2003, Louisiana prep standout John David Booty apparently became the first QB prospect in American scholastic history to forgo his entire senior campaign, as a means of joining the college-football ranks early...

On the basketball side, Jamal Murray, Isaac Humphries, and Tai Wynward, all international players, skipped all or part of their senior seasons to reclassify.

Quote from: Oklahawg on February 03, 2016, 07:18:06 pm
A lot of things matter: stars, development, physical maturation, character, heart, opportunity, etc. The "anti-stars" argument is merely an attempt to counter-balance the wicked misunderstanding of "stars".

I would love to start a website that covers recruiting. It would feature a dozen players at each position. They would be rendered anonymous on video - no names or identifying properties. Fans - like HV posters - would get to watch and evaluate those recruits.

Those elite recruits - the top 25, or so, nationally - would pop off the video if they were included. The rest?

For many, the average fan would not be able to figure out whether the recruit was a 4-star or a 2-star (5-star types would be that top 25, so we would hope we could figure them out). Without it being handed to them, the average poster does not know how to assess technique, football IQ, level of competition, sophistication of the system, and, in some cases, even the impact of raw skills like size, strength, and speed. Heck, do academics (and the likelihood of making it to campus in the fall) play a role in the eval?

I want to be clear - I am not bagging on anyone, their football knowledge, or past experience as a player/coach that would make them "recruiting smart". I include myself in the broad category of "want to understand, but don't get most of it."

The smartest rubric I can find is the "who else has offered" this recruit. It isn't perfect but it helps. The system IS improving - summer combines provide more and more across-the-state-line comparison. Those combines have shortcomings, notably that the players may not be able to afford to go (or are playing other sports during the summer) and it is drill-based without pads (much of the time).

The logic behind offers (or my hypothetical website) is simple: who is better equipped to evaluate recruits - a non-coach, non-player who makes $50-75K running a website (if that), or a seasoned coach making $250K-$8M annually to know precisely what it takes?

When one service fades and another takes its place stories leak that, quite frankly, undermine the credibility of the pay services and their gurus. UA fans now KNOW that Otis Kirk would lobby the national staff to upgrade UA recruits (usually recent commits) to drive local traffic. UA was prone to having Nutt-era recruiting efforts propped up by stars attached to academic whiffs who might provide star power to two even three classes as they struggled to make it to campus.

Mack Brown was always going to win the mythical "Recruiting National Championship" because UT was paying an ungodly sum of money to get a guru (I want to say Bobby Burton; I could be wrong) to provide them a list. The list was almost always a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Max Emfinger revealed years ago that he struggled being objective in evals of recruits who were great young men. UA annuls are filled with long-arm reaches who were offered/committed/signed on the most questionable of circumstances, only to see stars populate the page next to their name. Drive hits on that website.

Years ago, I had the privilege of watching Chris Massey (Spiro OK, HS; OSU DB) slice and dice a really good HS team in the playoffs. He outscored the other team 35-33, and even scored two of the other team's points. With 15 seconds left in the game and Spiro at midfield, 4th and 12, Massey went into punt formation for the first time all year. He took the snap and ping-ponged his way out the back of his own endzone, running out the clock and insuring victory. Anywho, Massey had a teammate that was stunningly good. Almost as fast, a bit larger, and possessed a nose for the ball as OLB. No college offers.

Seems the kid was special ed and stood no chance of making it into a D1 school. A RB from KY a few years back was in similar position. A 5-star on-field talent according to some services, I think, but never darkened the door at KY, who inked him on signing day and benefited from the PR splash of a ranked class.

Mentioned elsewhere in the thread - who actually makes it to campus? Should matter in star rankings but it doesn't. Odd. Many of the top JUCO players who signed today were not elite recruits 2 years ago. (Think Dominique Reed, think Joseph Putu, to name two.)

Mentioned elsewhere - why do we not pay more attention to the end-product? Why do we not mention the productivity of recruits vs the potential of recruits? An after-the-fact eval, in other words. Sadly, that would make too much sense.

Think about the close proximity of Bama, Auburn, Florida, UGA, Florida State, and Florida.  Probably can throw in USC-E and Clemson also. Eight elite programs within a couple of hours of each other, and all eight are large public universities in premier conferences. They have large alumni bases and sit in the middle of lots of recruits. Those alums pay good coin to fund recruiting services. The players provide easy fodder.

Building Baylor, TCU and Houston is not easy. But, there is a gazillion worthy players within an easy drive. Bill Blankenship at Tulsa used to call it "recruiting on a tank of gas". CBB put 20K on a jet. Big difference.

The "next level" happens (sometimes quickly) if you happen to roster an assistant coach who is an elite recruiter. Gotta hope they can coach, too. Gotta hope that their relationships don't leave every other year when they are hired away to the next highest bidder. The game is tougher now than a decade ago - the elite recruiters are getting HC gigs (whether they deserve it or not). Those elite recruiters can bring in 6-8 studs a year, maybe.

Maybe we have a recruiter like that, but we won't if they aren't a high-character person and elite-level coaching technician. Development is still more important than raw talent, apparently.

Imagine winning two of the give-away games last year. You are coming off a 10-win season. That might matter also. Maybe not.

Bottom line, most of us really don't know enough about the film we watch to do more than ooh and ahh. We want to think otherwise, but it isn't reality.

Final thought. Joshua Jacobs of Tulsa was a nobody until his dad and HS coach got tape together with a transcript that shows he'll be a qualifier. Suddenly, he goes from a middling prospect with ZERO D1 offers to signing today with Bama and landing higher on at least one list (according to a poster on HV) than Porter. By Hogville Logic, Bama was in scramble mode, chasing Plan B recruits, and not possessing quality recruiters.

Or maybe a great player appeared late in his HS career, unbeknownst to most, and was fortunate enough to get folks noticing.

Makes you wonder how many solid D1 players never sign to play D1 ball because they play on a crappy team, with questionable position coaching, and don't manage to get their video in the right hands.

Top 100 recruits who plan to play their 2017 senior season in the state of Louisiana:

5-stars    4-stars   School out of HS Distribution
2017        1              1        LSU (Shelvin), TBD (Narcisse)

Update on Lowell Narcisse:

No. 6 dual-threat quarterback lost his father, forcing everything else in his life to the backburner. That includes his recruitment.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound four-star prospect out of St. James High School (La.) denied any schools had peaked his interest of late, despite several visits to LSU

Quote"LSU has been trying to get me on campus, but I'm busy with family and with a lot of other things," Narcisse told SEC Country Sunday at Nike's "The Opening" regional camp in New Orleans.

"I just haven't had a chance to focus on recruitment. (I will) towards the end of the season."

The death of Narcisse's father has left the quarterback with much to think about other than football.

The personal adversity has weighed heavily on the nationally sought-after prospect, but family remains first for Narcisse.

"He's doing well," St. James High School coach Robert Valdez said. "He has a great family and a great support system. I haven't gotten to talk to him much, but he will bounce back. The kid has a lot going on."

LSU is a likely finalist along with Auburn and Alabama.

Narcisse pointed out two important factors that bode well for LSU, including proximity to home during this adverse period and an always-steady relationship with offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.

"I'm from Louisiana. It's my home state," said Narcisse when asked about LSU. "Me and Cam always had a good relationship. He's really stuck with me and even after I committed (to Auburn). Still wanted me to be a part of the family. It showed me that he still really wanted me."

Former Auburn QB commit Lowell Narcisse focusing on 3 schools

Auburn still remains in the picture for quarterback Lowell Narcisse despite the four-star's decommitment from the school in January.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Narcisse said Sunday at the New Orleans Opening Regional that Auburn, along with Alabama and LSU are the three schools he's focusing on.

Narcisse, ranked as the No. 6 dual-threat quarterback in the country, No. 6 prospect in Louisiana, plans to commit at the Under Armour All-American Game in January and enroll early at his school of choice.

QuoteThe Saint James, La., standout said his surgically-repaired right knee, which caused him to miss almost all of his junior season, is 100 percent. He said he's even faster now, running 4.69 seconds in the 40-yard dash on Sunday. He was timed at 4.8 prior to the injury.

Alabama, Auburn and LSU are all looking for quarterback commitments for the class of 2017. Narcisse was committed to Auburn for six months.

"It was a premature decision," Narcisse said. "I got excited because everybody else was committing and I decided that I wanted to commit, too."

Narcisse said he remains in contact with Auburn coaches, talking with them two or three times a week. He hasn't planned his next trip to Auburn.

"The opportunity is there, especially the way that the quarterback situation is going," Narcisse said. "I think I can go in and play right away."

QuoteCOLUMBUS, Ohio -- Urban Meyer clearly wasn't thrilled with the recent changes to recruiting rules, but it's the deregulation of text messages in particular that is bothering the Ohio State coach.

Along with banning satellite camps Friday, the Division I Council deregulated electronic communication with student-athletes in several sports including football. The change could allow coaches to send unlimited text messages to potential recruits and contact them on social media.

While the satellite camp rule doesn't appear like it will affect the Buckeyes much, both that change and the potential flooding of the phones of recruits have Meyer's attention as likely problems for student-athletes moving forward.

"The texting thing is the most ignorant thing I've ever heard in my life," Meyer said after practice Monday morning. "It's hard, but if they're making a decision because coaches are upset about it, that's not the point.

"Do you really want text messages from 100 universities on your phone when you come out of school? The ones I know don't. 'What? I don't want to hear from these schools.' Some intern is going to be punching text messages on your phone, and maybe you can block numbers and all that, but that's just too hard, right? Because it's easier on coaches? Maybe it's easier for the enforcement because people are doing it, but it just doesn't make sense."

The texting rule change brings football in line with men's basketball, which has had deregulated texting since 2012.

QuoteAlong with outlawing satellite camps last week, the Division I Council deregulated electronic communication in football, cross country, track and field and swimming and diving. In other words, recruits could receive unlimited texts from coaches and this also opens communication across other social media like Snapchat.

The change does not alter the timing of when a college coach can initiate contact with a potential recruit, the spokesperson added. That remains Sept. 1 of a player's junior year. Players can reach out to coaches before then, but the coach cannot initiate the contact.

The texting rule change brings football in line with other sports like men's basketball, which has had deregulated texting since 2012. The spokesperson said the change was suggested by the Football Oversight Committee for that very reason.

Still, this change makes the contact between a college recruiter and a high school student more direct. Instead of using Twitter's direct messaging, for example, coaches can directly send a text message without the usage of any other phone application. It becomes nearly impossible for a player to ignore if he is on the phone.

On the other hand, many recruits have notifications on for apps like Twitter and see direct messages just the same as they would a text.

The new rule seems to streamline communication and makes things easier for a college coach because not every athlete has a Twitter profile. Many recruits see more positives than negatives regarding the change.

"It's much easier communication," said Madison Central quarterback Jack Walker. "Then again, it could get out of control. Sometimes coaches can text too much and sometimes we can maybe even annoy the coaches. There's good and bad, but there are probably a lot more positives because it's easier for us and the coaches to communicate."

Players and coaches are communicating regularly as it is so it is likely not something that will change the recruiting process much at all, 247Sports Director of Scouting Barton Simmons said.

"I kind of like it because sometimes on Twitter it's not as easy to talk as it is through text," Callaway defensive end Aaron Odom said. "I don't have a problem with it all. It's not too much, and I think we should be able to handle it."

From the 2007 draft until today: #Alabama has 51 overall picks and 17 first-rounders. #Auburn has 30 and five.

http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2016/04/alcom_all-access_nfl_draft_mak.html

QuoteScarblog: Alabama didn't have a single player drafted in 2008, the first draft after Saban's first season at Alabama. Auburn had five picks that year, the last year the Tigers beat the Tide on draft day.

Starting with the 2009 draft, Alabama has had 48 picks and 17 first-rounders. Auburn has had 20 and four.

That talent advantage is a tribute not only to Alabama's recruiting in the Saban era but also to the Crimson Tide's ability to get the most out of its players' talents. The players themselves get the bulk of the credit for putting in the work to maximize their God-given ability.

The gap also raises questions about the Chizik and Malzahn staffs on the front end in terms of their ability to recruit and sign pro-level talent and on the back end regarding their skill in developing their players and helping turn them into pros.

Can Malzahn and his reconfigured Auburn staff continue to cut into Alabama's lead? Can they end Alabama's draft dominance?

Alabama has produced 14 first-round draft picks last 5 years. Next closest in the SEC is Texas A&M with 7. Florida and LSU each have 6.

Only 3 SEC schools without a 1st-round pick last 5 years are Arkansas, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. Hogs only school without 1st or 2nd rounder.

QuoteClass of 2017 ESPN 300 is all about the offensive tackles, and Trey Smith (Jackson, Tennessee/University School), a 6-foot-5, 300-pound tackle prospect is the No. 1 overall player.

Multiple SEC schools will be in a battle for the top-ranked player in the ESPN 300. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound prospect has the in-state Tennessee Volunteers, as well as Ole Miss, Alabama, Ohio State and Notre Dame, near the top of his list.

Potentially historic NFL Draft for the state of Mississippi

QuoteCHICAGO — Do you remember 2014, that magical season when Mississippi State was No. 1, Ole Miss was No. 3 — it was the greatest combined season in the state of Mississippi's history.

Well, what happened then has a direct line on what can happen on Thursday, when four players from Mississippi could go in the first round of the National Football League's draft. Why is that a big deal? Because Ole Miss and Mississippi State have never had more than two combined first-round picks in the same season in the history of the NFL.

There hasn't been three guys from Mississippi picked since 1975 (Jackson State's Walter Payton and Robert Brazile, and Mississippi State's Jimmy Webb were all top-10 picks that year).

Ole Miss' Laremy Tunsil, Laquon Treadwell and Robert Nkemdiche, along with Mississippi State's Chris Jones, are all in Chicago for the draft. The NFL only brought 25 players to this, because it tries to avoid a guy sitting for hours (and now potentially days) in the green room waiting for his name to be called. So when someone is invited, you know the league thinks they have a good shot at being picked early.

There's another dozen players (including from Southern Miss) that could be picked starting on Friday with the second and third rounds, or on Saturday during the fourth-through-seventh rounds.

B1G also concerned about their QBs not getting selected in the NFL draft:

Adam Rittenberg ‏@ESPNRittenberg 12h12 hours ago

Brissett before Connor Cook? Man. Cook won a ton, was great in big games. Expected a bit of a fall but not this.

Now Cody Kessler. Wonder if Dantonio should have intervened and named Cook a captain. Coaches do that when votes are close.

Where would Cardale Jones and Connor Cook have gone if they'd entered draft last year?

Jones had just won a national title. Cook had led MSU to Rose Bowl and Cotton Bowl wins. Both came back. Both seemingly paying for it.

Kyle Meinke ‏@kmeinke 11h11 hours ago

Quinn says Connor Cook checked out medically. Doesn't know why he's falling.

Bruce Feldman ‏@BruceFeldmanCFB 11m11 minutes ago

Spoke to one NFL QB coach who said he never would've guessed Cody Kessler & Jacoby Brissett would've been picked before Connor Cook.
